Domenech not taking Scotland lightly
rte.ie – Oct 5, 2006
Les Bleus travel to Hampden Park on Saturday for their Euro 2008 qualifier having already avenged their World Cup final defeat by the Italians. Domenech’s side beat Georgia 3-0 away and Italy 3-1 at the Stade de France to leave them behind Scotland at the top of Group B only on goal difference. France defender William Gallas claimed the Scots would be ‘quaking in their boots’ but his coach moved to rule out any suggestions of over-confidence in the French camp. He said: ‘Please do not underestimate the importance of this match with Scotland. Dean Saunders on Wales’ new captain
BBC News – Oct 5, 2006
But he will be thrilled to bits and I think it will be a positive thing for him. He’s 27 and it might be a turning point for him. In fairness, there were not many candidates standing up and saying ‘I’m the obvious choice for captain’. The usual skipper, Ryan Giggs, is out injured and most of the rest of the boys are young and inexperienced… But he will be thrilled to bits and I think it will be a positive thing for him. The usual skipper, Ryan Giggs, is out injured and most of the rest of the boys are young and inexperienced. John Toshack has obviously had a long and hard think and decided this will work out well for both Craig and for Wales.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Staunton expects a win in…
BBC News – Oct 5, 2006
After losing their Group D opener against Germany, nothing less than an Ireland victory will suffice against Cyprus in Nicosia on Saturday. “If we play at the same tempo and go at Cyprus like we did at Germany, thenwe should be okay,” said Staunton. “We are still building, but I would expect us to win. ”

Staunton will be watching from the stand as he has been banned from the touchline by Uefa for one match… That is the way I want toplay, but we have to keep the ball better – because we let ourselves down in thesecond half on that,” added Staunton. “The boys know that, although there was a lot of pressure on them, especially after losing 4-0 to Holland before that. “What I am concerned about is we have not scored for three games, although moreimportantly we have to start keeping a clean sheet. “We are looking at both aspects. We are working on crossing and finishing, andon the other side of things we are looking to tighten up in defence.

Football : Germany ready to take on Georgia
???? – Oct 5, 2006
Germany have so far carried their fine form of the World Cup finals into the autumn’s Euro 2008 qualifiers. However coach Joachim Loew has been forced to make some experimental changes to his squad for Saturday’s friendly game against Georgia in Rostock and their Euro 2008 qualifier away to Slovakia in Bratislavia four days later with several key players out injured. But the coach says that the priority lies not with this Saturday’s friendly game, but the Euro 2008 qualifier against Slovakia four days later. Germany currently lead Group D on goal difference with six points from two matches, after a 1-0 victory over Ireland and a 13-0 thrashing of San Marino.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Ferdinand expects Rooney…
BBC News – Oct 5, 2006
Manchester United striker Rooney, 20, scored his last competitive goal for England against Croatia at Euro 2004. But defender Ferdinand said: “He will be on the scoring trail again soon. “Crouchy can do no wrong in an England shirt. His goalscoring record is up there with the best of them and add Wayne and it could be fantastic… But Ferdinand believes too much has been made of his United team-mate’s supposed lack of form. “He has set himself some fantastically high standards and if he is not attaining them at any point people seem to think it’s an absolute travesty,” added centre-back Ferdinand. “But he hasn’t been playing poorly by anyone’s standards. He has been doing okay and is finding his feet fitness-wise and is improving every day. “Against Benfica in the Champions League he was asked to do a job out wide, which he did brilliantly. “And I think it was a good game for him in terms of fitness levels.

Israel ready for tough test in Moscow
Jerusalem Post – Oct 5, 2006
After registering easy wins against lowly Estonia and Andorra in the opening two games of the campaign, the showdown against the Russians will be the first real test for Dror Kashtan’s team, which will need at least a draw to stand a real chance to qualify from Group E. “Russia is a very strong team,” an optimistic Kashtan told reporters ahead of the game. “They didn’t take part in the last World Cup, but they have always been a part of Europe’s elite. A lot of money has been injected into Russian soccer and that has attracted many foreigners to play in the Russian league… “They didn’t take part in the last World Cup, but they have always been a part of Europe’s elite. A lot of money has been injected into Russian soccer and that has attracted many foreigners to play in the Russian league. The Israeli team has not traveled to Russia in optimal condition, as regular starters Yaniv Katan and Michael Zandberg are injured and have rendered Kashtan’s attacking midfield options limited. To make matters worse, team captain Yossi Benayoun is not completely match fit and his participation will be decided close to kick-off. The West Ham playmaker was unable to take part in the team’s training drills on Thursday and the medical staff is trying to find a solution to his problem. “I am not able to run at full pace,” Benayoun explained. “I’ll do anything to play this game, but I can’t promise anything before resuming training.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Sanchez sets NI qualifying…
BBC News – Oct 5, 2006
On Saturday Northern Ireland face the Danes having lost to Iceland and beaten Spain in their opening two qualifiers. “If we can draw this game and beat Latvia next week, that is four more points,” said Sanchez ahead of Saturday’s game in Copenhagen. “We were out of it after one game, then back in it after the second, so where will we be after the third game?”.

Bilic blasts England Cup display
BBC News – Oct 5, 2006
Bilic, whose side will play host to England next Wednesday, criticised the squad of former boss Sven-Goran Eriksson for failing to gel as a team. He told The Sun: “They were no good – they were nothing. They were so boring. “I have never seen in my life such a great collection of players play as defensively as they did… “I couldn’t even explain it to my nine-year-old son. ”

Even though Eriksson left after England’s World Cup exit, Bilic is still not completely impressed by new boss Steve McClaren after the laboured 1-0 win in Macedonia last month. “I can’t understand why they played so defensively at the World Cup,” he said. “But they were the same against Macedonia, so I don’t think it was all down to Eriksson. ”

Croatia head into Wednesday’s match with one point from their opening Euro 2008 qualifier – a 0-0 draw with Russia last month.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Evans hungry for success
BBC News – Oct 5, 2006
The 18-year-old Manchester United defender made an impressive debut in the 3-2 win over Spain in September and he is hungry for more success. Evans, currently on a season-long loan deal at United’s
feeder club Royal Antwerp, is clearly ambitious. “I always set myself targets and the idea was to get in Manchester
United’s first team before the end of last season,” he said. “It did not happen but that made me even more determined to succeed… Evans, currently on a season-long loan deal at United’s

progression as I am playing first-team football in Europe.

Italy look to rediscover World Cup form
Independent Online – Oct 5, 2006
Roberto Donadoni’s team drew at home to Lithuania and lost away to France in their opening two Group B qualifiers and now face opponents they beat on their way to success in Germany in July. Italy beat Ukraine 3-0 in their quarterfinal in Hamburg and striker Luca Toni, who scored twice in that game, believes the Azzurri still have the same desire for success. ‘We have to go out there and win at all costs’”The first two games didn’t go well and now we really need to get three points – we have to go out there and win at all costs,” said Toni. “We won the World Cup and it is impossible to imagine us not being there at the European Championships… Italy beat Ukraine 3-0 in their quarterfinal in Hamburg and striker Luca Toni, who scored twice in that game, believes the Azzurri still have the same desire for success. ‘We have to go out there and win at all costs’”The first two games didn’t go well and now we really need to get three points – we have to go out there and win at all costs,” said Toni. “We won the World Cup and it is impossible to imagine us not being there at the European Championships. Downing rejects claims of favouritism
Independent Online – Oct 5, 2006
McClaren was assistant to Sven Goran Eriksson when the midfielder was first called up for his debut to face Holland as a 20-year-old in February 2005. And the left-sided player has started in all three of England’s three internationals since McClaren left his club post to take charge of the national team. ‘I’d like to think I’ve won people over’But Downing – who is expected to win his ninth cap in the Euro 2008 qualifier against Macedonia at Old Trafford, Manchester, Saturday – is convinced his displays have demonstrated just why he has been called up to deputise for the injured Joe Cole in the wake of England’s disappointing World Cup campaign. “I’d like to think I’ve won people over,” he said. “I think people that I’ve met have been quite complimentary about my performances and I know that I’m not in the squad just because Steve McClaren is the manager. And hopefully my performances will get me in and not just because he is the manager… “I’d like to think I’ve won people over,” he said. “I think people that I’ve met have been quite complimentary about my performances and I know that I’m not in the squad just because Steve McClaren is the manager. And hopefully my performances will get me in and not just because he is the manager. ”

With Chelsea’s Cole nearing a return to fitness after suffering a pre-season knee injury and Manchester United’s Kieran Richardson also challenging for a place on the left flank, Downing knows he faces stiff competition for a position that was long regarded as England’s weak spot. But he is satisfied his form in the McClaren era has been good enough to secure his starting spot.
