Aragones signs new contract – iht, sports, football, soccer,Spain…
International Herald Tribune – Oct 19, 2006
Aragones’ new deal gives him the opportunity to lead the national team at the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland — if Spain qualifies. “To my knowledge he signed on Tuesday but the contract was already agreed anyway, as the law says, because a verbal agreement has the same value as a written one,” Spanish federation president Angel Maria Villar said in El Pais on Thursday. Aragones, whose previous contract ended after this year’s World Cup in Germany, has recently been under fire. His situation improved last week with Spain’s 2-1 friendly victory over Argentina. Spain’s previous five games had produced just a victory, a draw and three defeats. The team was eliminated from the World Cup by France and then suffered straight losses in European qualifying against Northern Ireland and Sweden. Aragones submitted his resignation after the Northern Ireland defeat, but it was rejected by Villar… His situation improved last week with Spain’s 2-1 friendly victory over Argentina. The team was eliminated from the World Cup by France and then suffered straight losses in European qualifying against Northern Ireland and Sweden. Sweden leads with 12 points from four. The top two qualify.

Henry, Eto’o, Ronaldinho named contenders for Golden Ball
Hindu – Oct 18, 2006
He was voted league player of the year for a record third time by English soccer writers. Eto’o capped his inaugural season at Barcelona with 24 goals, and improved to 27 last season. “He has had a great year and shown he is a top striker,” Ronaldinho told France Football. As for his own candidacy after a disappointing World Cup, Ronaldinho said he had a chance of becoming the first player since Marco van Basten in 1988-89 to retain the trophy. “I think I have done my work,” he said. “I’m happy with what I have achieved and we will see if that is enough. ”

Chelsea tops the list with 10 nominated players, followed by Barcelona on eight and Lyon with six.

BBC SPORT | Football | African | Angola eye fourth Cosafa title
BBC News – Oct 20, 2006
They return to Zambia in a bid to repeat their triumph in the annual southern African championship final of two years ago, when they overcame their hosts in a post-match penalty shootout after a goalless draw at Lusaka’s Independence stadium. That win marked their third triumph in the regional tournament and set the tone for surprise World Cup qualification one year later and a berth at the Nations Cup finals for the first time since 1998. Angola will have only six of their World Cup squad in Lusaka, hampered by Saturday’s match falling outside Fifa’s international calendar and, as a result, they are unable to call upon their considerable foreign legion. But they will start as favourites against a Zambian side, still shell-shocked by defeat at home by South Africa in the Nations Cup qualifiers earlier this month.

I have lived in Portugal for most of my adult life, and I am very happy to be Portuguese. Greatest change you would like to see in the running of your sport: Fewer qualifying matches for major tournaments. Look at the last World Cup, teams playing in the final matches were not at the level they are capable of playing at and we could change of football. I’d also like to see technology used more to help referees with decisions. Some of the biggest leagues in the world now involve huge money, and the referees are not even professional. The referee is only one man, cannot be all-seeing, and if the technology is there it should be employed to help with decisions. How is your sport covered in the media? Football is well covered in almost every aspect.

World Cup own goal gives JJB poor first-half

capitalgainstaxhead H1. The company sold £14m of replica shirts during the tournament, but admitted that it cut shirt prices by up to £5m to compete with rivals. When Tom Knight, the chief executive, was asked if he made any profit at all on them, he said: “Very little”.

Warrior Drogba strikes right note
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 20, 2006
A week earlier he had tried the same trick at Fulham. In a muddled television interview he uttered the infamous words, “sometimes I dive”. “Only sometimes?” was the question most football fans were asking of him at the time. In Chelsea’s next home game, against West Ham, Drogba played like a man possessed. Every ounce of his anger was channelled into an immense performance of power and aggression. It was like the moment when the Incredible Hulk turns green, and Drogba has been in comic-book hero form ever since… He gave his all as Ivory Coast’s World Cup captain, and now he represents the essence of Chelsea’s success every bit as much as John Terry or Frank Lampard. Last Saturday, amid the carnage of the closing moments at Reading, Drogba made a series of towering defensive headers that his captain would have been proud of. He is as single-minded and partisan as Mourinho himself. A warrior of a centre-forward.

Australia to play Ghana in London
International Herald Tribune – Oct 20, 2006
14, Football Federation Australia said Friday. Australia, preparing for next year’s Asian Cup finals, will play the 24th-ranked Ghanians at Loftus Road in west London, home of the Queens Park Rangers. Ghana was the only African country to make the second round of the World Cup, beating the Czech Republic and the United States before being eliminated by Brazil in the second round. Australia, ranked 37th, also lost in the second round to eventual champions Italy. Australia has scheduled several matches in London to make it easier for their European-based players to take part. “Our eyes are firmly on achieving success at the Asian Cup and matches like the one against Ghana are going to be crucial to our preparations,” said coach Graham Arnold.

Cahill in queue for top award
The Australian – Oct 19, 2006
module-subheader –> SOCCEROOS star Tim Cahill is among the nominees for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for the European footballer of 2006. Cahill’s heroics with Australia at the World Cup and his consistent form with English Premiership club Everton have seen him named among the 50 nominees. He shares a nomination with the cream of international football, from Ronaldinho and Wayne Rooney to Italian World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro to the retired Zinedine Zidane. Cahill is the only nominee from the Asia region. Also among the nominees is Inter Milan’s Fabio Grosso – the Italian fullback whose fall in the penalty area ended the Socceroos’ World Cup campaign. Cahill kick-started Australia’s World Cup run when he came on as a substitute to score twice against Japan. The nomination is a credit to Cahill’s stamina, as he has played non-stop at the top level for Australia and Everton for more than two years.

BBC SPORT | Football | Europe | Mourinho rules out Barthez move
BBC News – Oct 19, 2006
With Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini out with head injuries, Hilario stepped in for the Champions League tie. Barthez is a free agent after recently announcing his retirement. But Mourinho said: “What we have to try to get is a third goalkeeper and Fabien is not a preferred third goalkeeper. He is a high-profile goalkeeper.

The light-hearted thoughts on Michigan athletics
SportingNews.com – SportingNews.com (subscription) – Oct 18, 2006
Sweet because Ohio State and Michigan proved they are the best two teams in the country and bitter because Miami put ?The U? back into thUg. The Miami-Florida International (who?) brawl was one of the craziest things I?ve ever seen in sports. Mind you, within the last year I?ve seen Delmon Young leisurely throw a flippin? bat at an umpire, Zinedine Zidane head-butt an opponent in the middle of the World Cup final and a race car driver performing a running dropkick into the windshield of an opponents car. So it?s not like I haven?t seen weird displays of anger in sports. But come on, how does something like that happen?

If this had just been a scuffle between the two teams, where players were pushing and shoving each other, I?d say, fine. You have to stick up for your teammates and your school when you?re at home. But swinging your helmet like you?re William Wallace in Braveheart or doing your best Gregory Hines impersonation on someone else?s back and head? I can?t accept that… Ron, if you?re reading this blog please take my advice, ?One more year! One more year!?

document. For some colleges the weekly consumption of alcohol stems from the team?s poor performance (see: Michigan football 2005). For other schools just about anything is a good reason to party (see: Wisconsin). But whatever the reason, this is the greatest time of the year on a college campus (unless you?re Duke). So, three cheers for the start of another college football season! Fun will be had by all.

Celtic’s fiery pride created in Japan
International Herald Tribune – Oct 18, 2006
Hark back to that night when Celtic beat Inter, 2-1, and heed these words of Stein: "There is not a prouder man on God's Earth than me at this moment. Winning was important, aye, but it was the way that we won that has filled me with satisfaction. We did it by playing football; pure, beautiful, inventive football. "There was not a negative thought in our heads. Inter played right into our hands. It's so sad to see such gifted players shackled by a system that restricts their freedom to think and to act. "Our fans would never accept that sort of sterile approach.

Wembley, contractors finally reach deal, clear way for FA Cup final…
International Herald Tribune – Oct 19, 2006
Thursday’s agreement also means that England’s national team can also resume playing at Wembley. Its last game at the famous old stadium was a 1-0 loss to Germany in October 2000, a qualifier for the 2002 World Cup. England has since been playing its home games at club stadiums around the country, including Manchester United’s Old Trafford, Newcastle’s St. James’ Park and Aston Villa’s Villa Park. The dispute had been a major embarrassment to English soccer, with the Football Association waiting to unveil what it claims will be the most spectacular stadium in the world, The stadium, visible all over north and west London, has an eye-catching steel arch which dominates the skyline.

Amputation the cost of cup dream
The Age – Oct 18, 2006
“It was a big decision,” said Tawake, who is expected to resumefull training in six weeks. “I thought about my rugby future, especially with my history of injuries, and I couldn’t afford tohave any more time off. “With the World Cup next year, I wanted to give myself everychance (of being there) and to do that, I needed a good pre-season. It (the finger) was very painful and it was very frustratingbecause it wasn’t getting better. Since it’s been cut off, I justfeel relieved. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ve made the rightdecision. The 24-year-old has since taken inspiration from AFL and WestCoast star Daniel Chick, who had the ring finger on his left handamputated after enduring a recurrent dislocation in 2002… Chick went on to complete every match for Hawthorn that seasonand was one of the best for the Eagles in their premiership win inSeptember. “I didn’t really know about him (Chick) at the time,” Tawakesaid. “But it’s positive that Daniel Chick’s shown that you can geton with your football career after going through something likethis. If he can do it, then I know that I can do it, too. Brumbies team doctor Warren McDonald said amputation proved tobe the most effective alternative. “One option was to clean out the infection and allow the jointto fuse itself,” he said. “However, this would’ve left him with astiff joint.

This comes on the heels of a R600000 sponsorship from Medal Paints to upgrade the Absa Stadium while last week R500000 was received from Willie Pieterse of Elvin Food and Beverages to buy a new state of the art electronic scoreboard and upgrade the public announcement system. ?The stadium will be completely re-painted, and the installation of the new scoreboard and PA system will all be completed prior to the start of next season,?? Blom said. Border Rugby Football Union (BRFU) manager Leon Botha said yesterday the sponsorships were good news. ?It shows people have noted the new stability within Border Rugby and that we are on the right track. ?The upgrades are way overdue and seeing that we are one of several stadiums which may play host to the 2010 Soccer World Cup, things are looking up. ??

SR:This is a high line for a team that can’t score, but you are not getting me to bet any amount of money on Blaine Gabbert on the road. Especially in Seattle. The Seahawks defense will score in this game and set up another score, and Seattle will win this one by double digits.PESCA: It is indeed predicted to be the highest scoring Super Bowl ever by the people who decide such things in Las Vegas and that seems like a pretty reasonable assumption.
