Maradona in talks to become Honduras coach
International Herald Tribune – Oct 26, 2006
The federation said Thursday it opened talks with the former Argentina captain, who would aim to lead the Central American nation at the 2010 World Cup. Honduras has only made it to one World Cup — in Spain in 1982. “We would like to know Maradona’s intentions so we can analyze whether we are able economically to contract him as a coach,” federation president Rafael Leonardo Callejas said, adding that the federation would make a decision next week. Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title, arrived in Honduras on Wednesday to play a friendly against former Honduras players as part of a tour known as “Showbol,” a seven-a-side, small-field exhibition. Maradona indicated that he was interested in the job, saying “everything is possible. ” “If we all shoot in the same direction we could form a good team,” Maradona said… Maradona indicated that he was interested in the job, saying “everything is possible. ” “If we all shoot in the same direction we could form a good team,” Maradona said. “I have spoken with many people who say this football (team) is good. ” Honduras is preparing for the Central American championship in El Salvador, which is a qualifying event for next year’s Gold Cup. The federation’s list of candidates for its next coach reportedly includes Ramon Maradiaga and Edwin Pavon of Honduras, Flavio Ortega and Rene Simoes of Brazil, Costa Rica’s Alexandre Guimaraes, former United States manager Bruce Arena, Italy’s Francesco Moriero, and Ricardo Lavolpe — the Boca Juniors manager and former Mexico coach.

” Johnson, spoke about how some of his own friends where drawn toward a life of drugs and crime, said he had never seen conditions like those in Mathare. Mathare Youth Sports Association has become an institution in Kenya, a country of 33 million people. The team has produced 20 players for the national squad and in June this year won the street football World Cup in Berlin, Germany, played alongside the World Cup. Njihia, who also is a member of Kenya’s under-20 team, scored the winning penalty after a tie break. “It was a world away from what I am used to,” he told The Associated Press. “I would probably be selling drugs if it had not been for football,” he said. Living with his mother in a one room shack without running water, he has already lost 10 close friends to gun crime.

Hungary coach Peter Bozsik resigns after embarrassing loss to Malta
International Herald Tribune – Oct 26, 2006
The Hungarian Football Federation said it unanimously accepted Bozsik’s resignation and that no decision had been made on his successor. An interim coaching staff will lead the team on Nov. 15 for a friendly against Canada, the federation said in a statement. Bozsik, who was named in March to succeed Lothar Matthaeus, had three wins and four losses as coach of the national squad. The 2-1 loss to Malta on Oct… The 2-1 loss to Malta on Oct. 11 was considered one of Hungary’s biggest upsets. The team has not played in a major international tournament since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. It was only Malta’s fourth official victory and first since beating Estonia 1-0 in a 1993 World Cup qualifier. Bozsik’s father, deceased soccer legend Jozsef Bozsik, coached Hungary for one game in 1974 before retiring for health reasons.

As a result, margins will be slightly lower for the year to October 31. Revenue from summer package holidays sold in Britain rose 2pc, despite a 5pc cut in capacity on tour holidays. By focusing on more expensive long-haul trips, First Choice “outperformed the market for both sales and volume”. Like-for-like sales on adventure holidays rose 8pc. First Choice is outsourcing some back- office tasks, which will lead to up to 150 jobs being cut but it plans to employ some staff in other roles.

FA face crisis over reforms
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 26, 2006
More than 14 months after Marks & Spencer chairman Lord Terry Burns delivered his report on the future of the FA, representatives of the amateur game are preparing to throw out the proposals. FA chairman Geoff Thompson and chief executive Brian Barwick will make a last ditch appeal to the rebel members of the FA council tomorrow to persuade them to back the reforms. But The Daily Telegraph understands those pleas are likely to fall on deaf ears with around a third of the council set to vote against… But even if that gets through – and according to even the most optimistic of FA sources it is looking “very, very tight” — a key decision like this must then be put to the FA’s 7,000 shareholders. But the shareholdings are weighted heavily in favour of the amateur game and any key ruling on the future of the FA requires a 75 per cent majority to have it passed. Compared to the debacle of England’s World Cup campaign or the costly row over Wembley the rejection of the Burns report may not spark much outrage among fans. But, according to insiders, every FA crisis is a product of the bigger problems Burns is trying to address. Defeat in the critical vote tomorrow will only help ensure further years of crisis.

Bitter row over pub’s World Cup flutter goes to court
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 24, 2006
What was intended as harmless fun for regulars at The Star Inn, Roffey, West Sussex, has led to bitterness and bar room bans, with the BBC and FIFA, football’s governing body, being dragged into the dispute over which minute the first goal was scored in England’s opening game against Paraguay. Debbie Mann, 43, paid out on four minutes, the time she says was shown on the TV screen in her pub… “I was a bit surprised by his attitude as he didn’t seem to be entering into the spirit of the sweepstake,” she said. “The sweep wasn’t my idea. I don’t even like football and wasn’t watching the match. “Mr Manson went away disgruntled and returned the following day armed with evidence that the goal — an own goal by Carlos Gamarra — had been scored on 2 minutes 45 seconds, in other words in the third minute. “He was being very rude and abusive and we had to tell him to go away and not come back,” said Mrs Mann. “I accept that he had the correct time but we made it clear that we would pay out on what time was given during the broadcast. I thought that was the end of the matter.

Roundup: More games abroad but none in LA
International Herald Tribune – Oct 25, 2006
At a meeting in New York on Tuesday, the owners passed a proposal to play regular-season games outside the United States. They expressed skepticism that a stadium deal in Los Angeles could be reached. Starting next season, the NFL will play one international game, and starting in 2008, it could play two. The sites will be in Germany, Britain, Mexico or Canada, with a bidding process to determine where the games will be and which teams will participate… Goodell, in his first owners’ meeting as commissioner, said the new estimated cost of a stadium in Los Angeles could reach $1 billion. Goodell attributed part of the estimate to the rising cost of steel and concrete, which is hampering stadium construction across the United States. Goodell insisted that he would not abandon the idea of football in Los Angeles. “It’s a challenge we can meet,” he said.

The Harambee Stars’ next qualifier in Group 6 is scheduled to take place against Swaziland in March. World football’s governing body suspended the east African nation indefinitely on Wednesday for failing to respect signed agreements and for recurrent problems in its federation. It said the ban would remain in place until agreements were fully implemented. However, Kamanda is optimistic the suspension on the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) will not last long.

BBC News – Oct 25, 2006
“Alfie (Gareth Thomas) has been a superb captain, his enthusiasm is infectious,” Jones said. “He is well liked throughout the squad and it is good to know he will be there alongside me. ”

Jones has led his country once before, in a 2003 World Cup warm-up match that ended in a 43-9 defeat. But the fly-half, who played all three Tests for the Lions in their last tour to New Zealand, believes that Wales started on a path that year that will pay dividends in the 2007 tournament.

BBC SPORT | Cricket | Aussies given Ashes tickets hope
BBC News – Oct 26, 2006
“The Australian Cricket Family ensures members have the best opportunity to see the Australian cricket team in action and this second chance offer is part of our ongoing commitment to them,” said CA chief executive James Sutherland. The Queensland state government has banned advertising blimps from flying over The Gabba during the first Test. “It is common place for major events such as the recent Football World Cup in Germany or the imminent International Cricket Council World Cup to have legislated protection from ambush marketers trying to sneak a free ride at the expense of legitimate sponsors who make such events possible. “We argued that what is good for these sorts of global events is good for Australia as well, and congratulate Queensland for setting the pace,” said Sutherland.

Swindon hit further snags as Tuttle rejects offer
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 25, 2006
It leaves Swindon with a dilemma, but they continue to look internally for a successor to Wise, last night opening talks with club captain Ady Williams about taking the job. In an escalation of the debate over cheating at this year’s World Cup, Fifa disclosed yesterday that more than half of the players treated on the pitch in Germany were not in fact injured. Professor Jiri Dvorak, Fifa’s chief medical officer, told the organisation’s referees committee that many players had feigned injury for tactical gain. Despite such prevalent cheating, Fifa president Sepp Blatter insisted he was satisfied with how referees had performed at the World Cup, arguing that they had done more than their counterparts in the 2002 tournament to keep injuries down. South Africa president Thabo Mbeki, looking to assuage fears that the tournament in 2010 could be marred by the country’s infrastructure problems and violent crime, has vowed that the event would be “eminently successful”. “We are at the stage of planning, looking what can be done — Fifa continues to have unflinching confidence in South Africa,” he said yesterday at a meeting of the body in Cape Town… “We are at the stage of planning, looking what can be done — Fifa continues to have unflinching confidence in South Africa,” he said yesterday at a meeting of the body in Cape Town. Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce has backed John Wardle’s right to criticise the team after the chairman branded Saturday’s 4-0 defeat an “embarrassment”. “The chairman has put a great deal of money into this football club, so he is entitled to say that,” Pearce said. “There is no hiding place for anyone. People pay their money to watch their team — I would probably have said the same thing if I had been in their seats.
