Making switch from club to country is a two-year transition
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 2, 2006
Whoever is appointed will not have the total support of either the media or the country. That has been the case with all previous England managers and it is not going to change now, whether the new manager is English or not. I well understand the position the Football Association have found themselves in, and I think they have made the best of the intolerable situation that Eriksson’s actions have put them in. Like many others I suspect that if this had happened before World Cup qualification was assured, then the likely outcome would have been a parting of the ways. There is, of course, also the legal aspect to take into account, especially when an employee has over two years left on his contract -never mind the huge salary… That has been the case with all previous England managers and it is not going to change now, whether the new manager is English or not. There is, of course, also the legal aspect to take into account, especially when an employee has over two years left on his contract -never mind the huge salary. Having said that, the way in which the Egyptian FA have dealt with the ill-discipline of Tottenham’s Mido shows that there is certain behaviour and actions that are just not acceptable, whatever the position of the national team.

eBay now face legal action from Fifa | England | International |…
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 4, 2006
eBay say they have agreed to comply with the change in the legislation and yesterday took down from the site all tickets being sold by customers based in the UK. However, in a challenge to the new law and to Fifa’s demands, they have not stopped the sale of tickets placed on the site by customers based abroad or on their websites registered overseas. A statement from the company said: “The sale of World Cup tickets on eBay. uk or by UK registered sellers is not permitted under eBay’s policies. “We have recently updated our football ticket policy to reflect new legislation in this area. “Fifa had already written to eBay last week reminding them of the need to comply with the legislation fully.

Soccer’s card-sponsorship brawl
Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Nov 2, 2006
MasterCard, Purchase, N. , sued the 102-year-old Federation Internationale de Football Association, known as FIFA, which oversees the World Cup and other soccer football tournaments. In the lawsuit, filed this spring in U. District Court in New York, MasterCard contends FIFA violated terms of its contract by signing a deal with Visa after it had drafted an agreement with MasterCard. MasterCard declined to comment on the case.

Cut sound or colour from racist football matches, TV firms urged

The idea, which MEPs want to see in action at this summer’s World Cup in Germany, is the brainchild of Claude Moraes, a British Asian and Labour MEP for London, who suffered racist taunts at matches as a child. It is the highlight of a declaration backed by 423 MEPs, the largest number to sign such a motion, which will be unveiled at a joint campaign against racism in football with Uefa, the governing body for European football. But Mr Moraes said that two years of private discussions with Uefa bosses, networks, as well as German authorities and police, left him convinced that MEPs were “pushing at an open door”… After a week of unusually bad racist incidents, the Italian state broadcaster, RAI, began showing matches in black and white, with a caption on the screen explaining why, Mr Moraes said. “We’re not asking for some EU media onslaught, we’re asking individual broadcasters to take action,” he said. “I know football journalists and broadcasters care about it. We are pushing at an open door. “Uefa sources said the idea of switching to black and white transmission was “quite creative”, but said the governing body did not support cutting the sound to matches. Klinsmann denies salary reports
rte.ie – Nov 4, 2006
5 million a year salary to coach the United States national team. Klinsmann, a World Cup winner with West Germany in 1990, is in preliminary discussions with the United States Football Federation but said the figures mentioned in the media were fictional. As usual the speculation is not true and the figures have just been made up,’ Klinsmann said in newspaper Kolner Express. ‘The negotiations have only just started and there is no time pressure. ‘
Klinsmann, 42, guided his homeland Germany to a creditable third at the World Cup but turned down a contract extension to spend time with his family in California.

World Cup 2006 | 11.03.2006 Klinsi Critics Offer Grudging Support But…
Deutsche Welle – Nov 3, 2006
German soccer monarch Franz Beckenbauer, who publicly rebuked Klinsmann for heading back to his California home after the 4-1 defeat by Italy last week instead of attending a World Cup workshop in Düsseldorf two days later, has now changed his position. The Kaiser, speaking from Belgrade this week, now believes Germany can win the World Cup this summer with Klinsmann at the helm. “There is no question that Germany can win the World Cup. They are a young if inexperienced team and their strength lies in the support they need and surely will get from the home crowd,” he told reporters. Der Kaiser does a u-turn and backs his coach… This was in direct contrast to his statements last week: “At the beginning it worked out very well and Klinsmann was able to change a few things but now there’s not much left of all that. ”

“We are back where we were a few years ago and time is running out. ”

Klinsmann also got some word of support from Theo Zwanziger, the chief executive of the German Football Association (DFB). DFB chief Zwanziger supports stay-away Klinsmann

“He’s not an easy character but easy characters don’t win the World Cup,” Zwanziger said of the Germany coach. “We need people who go their own way and don’t change their minds all the time.

Caught in a perfect storm
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 3, 2006
Abramovich was attracted to football not by the Premiership or the FA Cup, remember, but by the Champions League at its most thrilling and glamorous (as demonstrated by Real Madrid at Old Trafford a couple of years back). He may have been reminded of that as Ronaldinho swept past John Terry to whip home that magnificent goal, in which case he was being reminded of the sheer class that still eludes his rough-hewn regime. While Chelsea can afford to outbid any other club for a player, they cannot buy the game’s heart and soul. Ronaldinho went to Barcelona the summer before last, just as Zinedine Zidane had gone to Real Madrid in 2001, because the giants of Spanish football are the greatest clubs in the world. I am not especially interested in the league tables produced by accountants from time to time – one recently showed that Manchester United’s revenue had been eclipsed by Real’s since David Beckham switched clubs – because you can tell the scale of a club just by looking at its shirt and both Barcelona and Real have values that transcend money… Although reports of Ronaldo’s demise may prove exaggerated – he did, after all, emerge from a trough to lead Brazil to triumph in the last World Cup -Zidane looks scarcely fit for a return to the French league, let alone for the higher reaches of the Spanish or the Champions League. One of the great myths is that, while form is temporary, class is permanent. If it were so, Alfredo di Stefano would still be in Real’s team. And Beckham struggling to oust Luis Del Sol. The England captain must be aghast at some of the fitness levels around him. He did, however, have the somewhat hollow satisfaction of a clean sheet as Real avoided the emphatic result Arsenal deserved.

Asia’s Rugby World Cup qualifiers transferred to Hong Kong

The matches were originally scheduled in Sri Lanka as part of the 12-nation Asian tournament, but the International Rugby Board postponed the tournament over security concerns. The IRB on Friday announced the round-robin between Asia’s last three possible World Cup qualifiers will be at the Hong Kong Football Club. Japan meets Hong Kong on Nov. 18, Hong Kong faces South Korea on Nov. 21, and South Korea play Japan on Nov.

We had two big semi-finals, some great quarter-finals and then there was Burton against Manchester United. "

THE ENGLAND TEAM

" That is serious stuff. England played Sweden in the World Cup and 21m people watched it on TV – and that doesn’t include the ones in the pub watching it. Nothing does this sort of business on TV any more. Coronation Street doesn’t, Eastenders doesn’t. Only unique live sporting assets can deliver this. England playing football in a major trophy takes it into a different sphere… We don’t have to decide now how we go about it but we have to learn from lessons of when we didn’t get these things and learn from lessons when we did – such as the Olympics. I think Lord Coe was very clever, a brilliant guy and a really huge contributory factor – as was the playing of the major officials at the right time. Maybe 2006 wasn’t our time but if 2018 comes through Europe then we have to be interested. We have massive and great stadiums – there is even a theory Wembley will be finished by then! "

A 2012 BRITISH OLYMPIC TEAM

" That’s our intention. We’ll have to see how it’s going to be made up in terms of nationalities. We believe there are enough reassurances from Fifa to make losing our identity a non-issue, I don’t see it from a Celtic point of view I see it from an England view and we would like to put out a British side. When I travel the world and go to functions there are 205 nameplates.

A not so secret shortlist and insider dissent
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 2, 2006
After all, it is only 10 days since they appointed a three-man sub-committee to search for Sven-Goran Eriksson’s successor and it will take another 16 days for them to scribble some names on a piece of paper to present to their bosses. Why? Since anyone who frequents a pub, let alone everyone in football from club chairman to programme seller, can tell you who is on the list. They are: Martin O’Neill, any English Premier League manager in the top half of the table and Guus Hiddink. And, though not certain to come under starter’s orders, Sir Trevor Brooking and Peter Taylor. Of those, Ulsterman O’Neill looks an outstanding choice, if not an outstanding bet, after Dave Richards, one of the three men on the sub-committee, stressed that the FA want someone “British” as opposed to English. The danger is that if any more uncomplimentary remarks about him are leaked from inside the FA, he might tell them to stuff the job before he is offered it… Zola, the first gentleman of football, admitted: “To be honest, I had never heard of Macclesfield before but it was a chance to help. ” And although Moss Rose is not quite as salubrious as the rebuilt Stamford Bridge, ex-Chelsea star Zola must have welcomed the opportunity to play on a decent pitch. Despite their defeat on penalties in the African Cup of Nations final, the Ivory Coast showed that they could present a real problem to group rivals Argentina and Holland in the World Cup. Their displays were another boost for the event that, while unloved by Premier League managers except when they are trying to steal players from it, has become important in the world calendar, even if it was marred by extraordinary rows, which led to a threatened strike by the DR Congo players and included Spurs striker Mido’s embarrassing public attack on his Egyptian manager. But most shocking was the Congolese authorities’ decision not to tell Lomana LuaLua that his 18-month-old son had died of a mystery illness. Callously, having kept it a secret for two weeks, they even allowed him to speak about his son and his other two children to an African newspaper when the boy was already dead. The Portsmouth striker was finally informed at the end of Congo’s 4-1 quarter-final defeat by Egypt.

Buffon deserves to win Golden Ball, Platini says
International Herald Tribune – Nov 2, 2006
Buffon is one of seven nominated players from the Italy team that captured its fourth World Cup title in July. Others included Fabio Cannavaro and Andrea Pirlo. “Given that Italy won the World Cup, I would give it to an Italian,” three-time Golden Ball winner Platini said Wednesday. “They should give it to Buffon… ” Buffon, the world’s costliest goalkeeper, plays for Juventus in Italy’s Serie B. He opted to stay with the team this season despite its demotion to the second tier because of its part in the country’s recent match-fixing scandal. Other nominees for the prestigious France Football magazine award include Germany captain Michael Ballack, Wayne Rooney, Thierry Henry and 2005 winner Ronaldinho.
