Kashtan leaves Katan off squad for qualifier against Croatia
Jerusalem Post – Nov 8, 2006
The 24-man squad, minus the five Israeli players who play overseas and will only join the side next week, will continue to train with coach Dror Kashtan over the next seven days leading up to the Euro qualifier on November 15. The squad trained Tuesday without one notable player. Maccabi Haifa forward Yaniv Katan was not called up to the match. “Katan was not called up to the squad for professional reasons,” Kashtan said at a press conference Tuesday. “The national team is above all else, and I expect any player to turn up whenever he’s called to the squad. Katan failed to join the national team a month ago for its Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia because of an injury. However, only days later he played for his club side, a move that extremely angered Kashtan… “Katan was not called up to the squad for professional reasons,” Kashtan said at a press conference Tuesday. “The national team is above all else, and I expect any player to turn up whenever he’s called to the squad. Rooney: We can get title back
Ireland Online – Nov 8, 2006
?Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and to go three or four seasons without winning the league is not good enough. ?We have the talent and quality to win the title but we have to work harder as a team and sign the players that can win us the league. ?Rooney insists he is not concerned about the reputations of Ballack and Shevchenko, believing United would be better served by concentrating on their own performances. To that end, patching up relations with Cristiano Ronaldo should have helped. Rooney remains disappointed at Ronaldo?s involvement in his dismissal during England?s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Portugal in Gelsenkirchen. But the former Everton star is happy to confirm the pair have now moved on and has called for the boo-boys who were out in force at Oxford on Tuesday night to lay off his young team-mate. ?I would rather he didn?t get any stick,? said Rooney… Offering forthright observations across a wide range of topics, the England striker admitted he was not happy at being told to play as a lone front-man by Sven-Goran Eriksson during the World Cup and expressed the hope new coach Steve McClaren will not force him to do it again during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. Rooney also endorsed the fears of manager Alex Ferguson that he is now a target for referees seeking a trophy dismissal. The 20-year-old has been sent off three times in the last year, culminating in last Friday?s early departure against FC Porto in Amsterdam which could yet earn him a three-match Premiership ban. ?Possibly, I am getting picked on,? he said. ?Referees get a lot of headlines with some of the decisions they make.

English FA fined over fan behaviour
Thursday, 9 November 2006 19:35

The English FA have reacted with ‘extreme disappointment after being fined ?6,237 by UEFA for improper conduct of England fans before last month’s Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia. The FA had mounted a forceful defence against the charge but were fined by UEFA’s control and disciplinary body. The Croatian FA have also been fined, in their case ?31,639, for a ‘serious lack of organisation’ concerning the match in Zagreb. Meanwhile Germany Under-21 striker Aaron Hunt has been banned for two matches for gross unsporting conduct after he was accused of making racist comments to England players in last month’s under-21 international. FA director of communications Adrian Bevington said: ‘We are surprised and disappointed, both at the decision itself and the fact that a verdict was reached today, bearing in mind the weight of evidence that we provided to defend our position… First-hand accounts provided by England fans formed a significant part of our submissions. ‘The FA maintains that neither we nor our supporters were responsible for the incidents that occurred. We have not yet received written reasons for this decision. Once they have been received and reviewed we will give serious consideration to launching an appeal. ‘
In referring to the Hunt decision, Bevington said: ‘We take the issue of racism very seriously and we welcome the fact that UEFA have decided to take action on this case. ‘
The Croatian FA were fined for a number of rules breaches including a serious lack of organisation, selling tickets on matchday without approval of the police, the English FA or UEFA, the throwing of missiles and the setting-off of Bengal lights. All the parties can lodge an appeal within 72 hours.

Herzog to bring Arsenal soccer legend to Israel
Jerusalem Post – Nov 8, 2006
Wright was guest of honor at an Israeli tourism reception held at Arsenal Football Club’s Emirates Stadium in north London. Wright, who was Arsenal’s top goal scorer of all time until eclipsed by Thierry Henry last season and was awarded the Member of the British Empire (MBE) by the queen in 2000, said he “could not wait” to visit Israel and pledged to promote the country as a tourist destination. “When I was asked to get involved [promoting Israeli tourism] I thought it was a great opportunity for me and I’m really pleased to be involved with it,” he said. At the reception, Herzog assured Wright that his stay in Israel “will not be forgotten for years to come and will be special for both you and us. “I’m really pleased about this as I was going to pay for it myself,” Wright replied, to huge laughter. “When you listen to someone like Rio Ferdinand [the Manchester United star] telling you that it’s humbling, uplifting and emotional to visit, especially the historical places like the Wailing Wall and the Via Dolorosa, it makes you really want to go… I played with Eyal [Berkowitz] and [current West Ham midfielder Yossi] Benayoun, even [Bolton’s defender Tal] Ben Haim, and they are very creative, clever and technical players. I’ve have found Israeli players to be very skillful. Looking ahead to Israel’s game against England in the Euro 2008 qualifiers next March, he said: “We [England] are going through a sticky period so we have to be careful as Israeli players are very strong and quick. ”

UEFA charge German after racism accusation

Ferdinand claimed that he was called a ‘monkey’ by German players but refused to name the supposed culprits publicly, though television pictures show a heated exchange between the West Ham defender and Werder Bremen striker Hunt during the match. Hunt – who is half English – denied the accusations. ‘I have not used any racial expressions,’ he said in a statement. ‘There were obviously a lot of verbal exchanges from both sides in this game, but such things happen in every game. ‘
‘I share a room with Kevin Prince Boateng. He is a black player. I hope that says it all… He is a black player. I hope that says it all. ‘
UEFA will also deal with a charge against the English FA for alleged improper conduct of England fans before last month’s Euro 2008 qualifier in Zagreb. The FA have submitted a statement forcefully contesting the charge.
