Prodigy needs Europe’s help to realise potential
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 11, 2006
Which is he: one of the most exciting talents to emerge in a generation? Or the over-hyped product of a commercial engine that is increasingly seeking to drive football?advertisement. He was born in Ghana and was playing football from the age of three in his home town of Tema. When he was eight his parents won a US immigration lottery and he moved to Washington DC, where his athleticism and natural skill were immediately picked up. So much so, that at 12 he was offered the chance to go to Milan and play for Inter’s academy. His advisers persuaded him he would be better off staying at home and at 14 he made his first appearance for DC United in the Major Soccer League, the youngest debutant in professional sport in American history. By 17, he was a regular in the team… In a move which must have cut Nike’s marketing executives to the quick, the 17-year-old Adu was not selected for the US World Cup squad for Germany this year. It was a telling omission. Pele played at the same age in the World Cup, so did Norman Whiteside. Even Adu’s contemporary, Theo Walcott, received an invitation to the party. The news of Adu’s trial at Carrington suggests those behind him must be worried about his development. While to admit it publicly might go against the grain of every American tenet of self-regard, Nike appear to recognise that he is not going to become the best player he can become if he stays in the United States. He needs to be in Europe, being schooled in the same environment as the best under-20s in the world, like the South Americans, Lionel Messi and Giovanni dos Santos, at Barcelona or the Nigerian, John Obi Mikel, at Chelsea.

England will need more than Woodward’s jargon
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 12, 2006
He is right to say that the coach has to have absolute control over his players, but cannot hide from the fact that he said nothing about the club-country argument – this has to be sorted out before any coach can be effective. He is right to highlight elite preparation, and I think his introduction of more specialist coaches was right, but answer me this – if the system he created was the correct one, and remember that everyone bar him stayed on after 2003, why didn’t that system seamlessly develop the team for 2007?You also have to take into account the other aspects of Woodward’s career, when presumably he was practising the techniques he now avows. Four lost Grand Slams, an ignominious World Cup quarter-final exit in 1999 and a disastrous Lions tour in 2005, the last being a situation in which he had the complete control he espouses. To claim, as he did, that it is still possible even to win the 2007 World Cup ignores the fact that his winning team took six years to build, and had many downs before that group of highly-talented players triumphed. I support Woodward’s demand for “complete and utter control” to be granted to the coach, and agree that there is an absence of strong leadership at present. Ladies and gentlemen, Martin Johnson has left the building.

Football – shaping a new England?
BBC News – Nov 13, 2006
That’s why the team becomes important, it provides something to cling to. ”

The past few major international football tournaments – World Cups and European Championships – have seen England covered in St George’s Cross flags. Bragg admits when this trend started it caused anxiety for those who had thought of the flag as a racist symbol, loved by the far right. But as he points out: “Nobody ever makes the assumption that a white van with the Welsh dragon on the back bumper must be driven by a racist. “No-one gets called a Little Scotlander. “There is a simple reason why so many ordinary people have recently turned to the St George’s Cross… “There is a simple reason why so many ordinary people have recently turned to the St George’s Cross. It’s the only thing we English have that belongs to us alone. ‘Lack self-confidence’

“Of the 32 countries that competed for the 2006 World Cup, there was only one which didn’t have its own parliament or passports or national anthem – England. “England’s continued attachment to the British anthem smacks of a lack of self-confidence. “The message sent out every time we sing God Save The Queen is one of ambiguity: ‘Hello, we’re the English, but we’re not really sure what that means’.

Stefanidis made it 2-0 in the 53rd. “It’s always fun to come home and win a prize,” said Larsson, who returned to his native Helsingborg after helping Barcelona win the Spanish league last season. Larsson also set up both goals in Barcelona’s 2-1 Champions League final win over Arsenal. He retired from the national team after Sweden’s loss to Germany in the second round of the World Cup.

Arsenal’s Ljungberg is Sweden player of year

He was also a leading figure when Arsenal reached the Champions League final, where it lost to FC Barcelona. “I am proud and humble to get this award,” Ljungberg said. “If you look at the football year 2006, it was very eventful. If I should try to sum it up, the Champions League final left some deep marks… If I should try to sum it up, the Champions League final left some deep marks. I can’t clean up this mess on my own, says Andrew
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 12, 2006
People can’t just abdicate responsibility. We can’t carry on like this. ” “No, but I work for a newspaper, you’re the Rugby Football Union’s director of elite rugby. Your job is entirely different from mine, you’re being paid a lot of money to come up with solutions,” I said. “Absolutely,” he replied. “You’re being paid a lot of money to write for The Sunday Telegraph. What are you going to do? Are you going to make any suggestions or are you going to say let’s carry on as we are, because I’ll tell you something, it’s not working for anybody at the moment.

NBC benefits from flexible Sunday night football scheduling
USA Today – Nov 13, 2006
After TNT NBA announcer Marv Albert noted Cleveland coach Mike Brown has 22 pairs of glasses he’s color-coded to fit his wardrobe, TNT’s Steve Kerr made a less-than-obvious analogy: “I think serial killers share those same tendencies. ”
On tap:
The Tampa Bay-Carolina game tonight on ESPN’s Monday Night Football might not seem compelling. But for ESPN — next year inheriting NASCAR races from NBC — everything is a promotional opportunity. NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon will be MNF’s celebrity booth guest, and there’ll be a feature on Joe Theismann going to Richard Petty’s driving school… Back story:
On coverage of the Major League Soccer title game Sunday on ABC, ex-U. World Cup team coach Bruce Arena worked with Eric Wynalda, the ESPN analyst who ripped Arena as a coach during Cup TV coverage. It made for an interesting subtext, such as when Arena told Wynalda: “You know me; I don’t always make the right (coaching) decision. That’s why I’m in the booth. ”
Long shot:
Rutgers somehow making college football’s Bowl Championship Series title game might create a marketing problem for Fox, which has the BCS title game and touts it by airing college highlights on its NFL pregame show. But Rutgers’ win Thursday against Louisville on ESPN drew 4.

Soccer: Roma’s Totti in full flower
International Herald Tribune – Nov 12, 2006
But he had something new in his life: Cristian, born to his wife, Ilary Blasi, a TV presenter, last November. Any father wants his boy to know him as a hero. Totti came back, perhaps too soon for his body, to perform fitfully in the World Cup, won by Italy. He then said he wanted time away from the national squad, time for his family, time for his club. As the goals come back to Totti, so the clamor grows for his return to the Azzurri. He is not simply a scorer, but rather, as the Italians put it, a ” trequartista” – part striker, part creator, a performer who glides between the midfield and the front line. His timing in the San Siro was so sweet, his finish so pure, his celebration so personal… Milan, a champion only in memory, flexed its aging muscle enough to threaten twice when Clarence Seedorf and Ricardo Oliveira in turn hit the crossbar. “We played an excellent match,” insisted Milan’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, “but we were punished for one or two lapses in concentration. Our good football is not translating into good results, a situation that needs to end as soon as possible. ” Ancelotti knows that is a statement that barely defines what will happen should Silvio Berlusconi, his paymaster at Milan, lose patience with a team that languishes 16th in Serie A. Milan’s misery is Roma’s joy. After Cristian Brocchi, a soldier of Milan’s midfield, suddenly curled in an equalizing goal from outside the penalty box in the 56th minute, Roma had to summon fresh desire, fresh belief to win the contest all over again. But what Totti had done in the seventh minute, he could do again seven minutes from the end.

ESPN.com – NCF – Miami senior lineman shot; death ruled homicide
ESPN – Nov 13, 2006
That’s the realityof it. “We’re trying to get through a hard time right now and it’sgoing to take time,” Miami quarterback Kirby Freeman told TheAssociated Press after a team meeting at the university’s athleticcomplex. “And that’s what being a close football family is allabout. We’re going to help each other with this. School officials said coach Larry Coker was “numb” over thenews. The athletic department released a statement urging anyonewith information about Pata’s death to call police. “Bryan was a fine person and a great competitor.

Grella to captain Australia in Ghana friendly
International Herald Tribune – Nov 13, 2006
The 27-year-old Parma midfielder will step in for Neill, who has a hamstring injury. Australian World Cup stars Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka also will miss the match. “I’m honoured,” said Grella. “I know when the full squad is available the captaincy will be given to someone else. “But I still consider myself a leader and am one of the players with more experience and can give information to younger players coming through and it’s great to help them get to international level. ” Today in Sports.

Monty still ahead of the game
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 12, 2006
That has to be one of the highlights of the year. “He intends to be part of the Ryder Cup until beyond 2010 and then, perhaps, captaincy may enter his thoughts: “I would fancy the job sometime but I have never thought of putting my name forward. “Meanwhile many great minds are wondering how to raise the stature of the World Cup, which has failed to attract some of the planet’s best players. Football, rugby union and cricket produce compelling shows every four years. George O’Grady, the executive director of the European Tour, would like to see this event adopt a similar policy. The next two years are scheduled for China. After that the future of golf’s World Cup remains uncertain.
