Cristiano Ronaldo says he’s OK for Portugal’s Euro 2008 qualif…
International Herald Tribune – Nov 13, 2006
Ronaldo went off with an ankle injury in United’s 1-0 win over Blackburn on Saturday, and Ferguson asked Portugal not to pick him if he’s not 100 percent fit. “It’s against Kazakhstan so you would have thought Portugal could handle that without Ronaldo but if he’s got one of these injuries which is 50-50 I hope he doesn’t play,” Ferguson said on Man U’s Web site. But Ronaldo said he hopes to play in Wednesday’s game. Portugal lies fifth in Group A, six points behind group leader Serbia.

Wales 4-0 Liechtenstein
BBC News – Nov 14, 2006
Jason Koumas set the pace against a side that Wales boss John Toshack had picked for a similarity to San Marino. The West Brom midfielder struck twice in the first half, picking his spots to fire home right-footed from long range. Two more goals followed as Craig Bellamy shot home from close in, before he set up Chris Llewellyn to slot in. That was the first four-goal haul for Wales under Toshack, and a perfect way for captain Ryan Giggs to celebrate winning his 60th cap… Toshack withdrew Giggs and Richard Duffy for the second half, switching from an attacking 4-4-2 to a more solid 5-3-2. That saw Carl Fletcher arrive to bolster central defence, while Joe Ledley slotted into the left wing-back role and Ricketts switched to the right, Bellamy taking over as captain. Bellamy and Earnshaw both went close with first-time efforts under pressure, as Wales continued to fire the crosses in. Koumas had a sniff of his hat-trick, but this time Jehle managed to get his whole body behind another well-struck effort from the West Brom man.

McClaren: Door open for young players
Ireland Online – Nov 14, 2006
Following last month?s dismal defeat in Croatia, McClaren hinted he might offer some of the youngsters responsible for getting England to next summer?s European U21 Championships a chance to get involved in Wednesday night?s friendly with Holland in Amsterdam. In the end, McClaren included only 18-year-old Manchester City defender Micah Richards in his squad and has resisted the temptation to bring more new faces in despite suffering an amazing eight withdrawals. However, with another friendly against Spain looming in February, McClaren insists the door has not been closed to the numerous talented young stars of the future who have already caught his eye… I speak to Jose Mourinho quite often. He wants to give Shaun more games but obviously, he has other priorities. ?After having his honeymoon period brought to an abrupt end last month when England followed their disappointing home draw with Macedonia with that dreadful defeat to Croatia, which raised major question marks over qualification for Euro 2008, McClaren may have wished for easier friendly opposition this week. England have not beaten Wednesday?s opponents in the Dutch capital since 1969 and although Robin van Persie has pulled out, Edwin van der Sar has asked not to be considered and Ruud van Nistelrooy continues to be overlooked, they will still provide a formidable test. ?It is a game I relish,? said McClaren. ?I would rather be playing this game than a lesser one. ?There is a history and tradition with these fixtures.

Robson’s return is a boost for Ireland
Irish Times – Nov 13, 2006
Robson may still have his own health to consider following surgery a few months ago to remove a small brain tumour, but there is no doubt he sees himself as mentor to Staunton. Ahead of Wednesday’s Euro 2008 qualifying tie with San Marino at Lansdowne Road, the pressure has at least eased considerably on Staunton. It reached fever pitch following the 5-2 defeat to Cyprus, but a 1-1 draw at home to the Czech Republic bought Staunton some time and victory against the Group D minnows, who have already conceded 20 goals in their opening two matches, is fully expected. Robson is certainly glad to be back after speculation he might have to resign his post as International Football Consultant for health reasons. “It was never like that because I always believed I would recover,” insisted Robson, who has missed Ireland’s last four games. “Stan and I were constantly in touch, as was (chief executive) John Delaney who has been marvellous to me… “Stan and I were constantly in touch, as was (chief executive) John Delaney who has been marvellous to me. The people at the FAI have shown patience and understanding. “They did not want to lose me, and I didn’t want to lose them either, but it was always going to take time after an operation like the one I had. “Now I’m back in the swing of things and very happy to be here. I made up my mind that I should try to be here, and it’s the first time I’ve flown since the operation. “Obviously, we’ve had a difficult patch, one I was sorry not to be involved with because I couldn’t help. “But now I’m here and I can help, and hopefully be a source of comfort to Stan and help him.

Republic report injury-free squad
BBC News – Nov 13, 2006
Although Lee Carsley and Jonathan Douglas sat out training on Monday with minor niggles, both are expected to be involved in Tuesday’s preparations. Shay Given will play his first game for more than eight weeks following surgery to repair a perforated bowel. The Irish have just one point from their first three qualifying matches. Newcastle United’s Stephen Carr and Stephen Ireland of Manchester City had withdrawn before the squad assembled in Dublin… Newcastle United’s Stephen Carr and Stephen Ireland of Manchester City had withdrawn before the squad assembled in Dublin. Staunton denied there had been a disagreement with Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder over playing Given in the Lansdowne Road game. “I do not know where the stories came from. I have spoken to Glenn and there is no problem,” said Staunton. “Obviously, Newcastle are concerned, bearing in mind their position in the league, and I can fully understand that. “But, as Glenn and myself know, this is a wonderful game for Shay to mark his comeback, in front of a full house and I certainly hope he will not be too busy. “It will be more a case of him concentrating for 90 minutes, and then he goes into the squad for Newcastle’s game with Arsenal.

Benayoun donates his body to Israel
International Herald Tribune – Nov 14, 2006
The lawyers, the bankers, the clubs and the medicine men all get in the way of such bravado. However, Yossi Benayoun intends on Wednesday to soldier on for Israel in a crucial Euro 2008 qualifying match against Croatia. He knowingly risks severing a partially torn ligament, risks his future in England where he is employed by West Ham, and risks his relationship with the Israeli team physician, who advised him not to play Wednesday. “Give me painkillers,” Benayoun reportedly told Dr. Mark Rosnovski after a scan Sunday revealed the ligament tear. “Do everything you can so that I can play. ” Benayoun said he suffered the injury Saturday in an English Premier League game for West Ham against Middlesbrough.

Brazil hoping to end year in style in friendly against Switzerland
International Herald Tribune – Nov 14, 2006
“Switzerland is a good team, they proved that during the World Cup,” Brazil midfielder Ronaldinho said. “Sure, they were eliminated, but without conceding a goal. ” The Swiss, who automatically qualify for Euro 2008 along with Austria as hosts, lost to Ukraine on penalties in the second round of the World Cup after a 0-0 draw. Playing against Brazil is a chance for the young team to gain even more experience… Switzerland will play without injured defenders Philipp Degen and Valon Behrami, giving Stefan Lichtsteiner his first chance to play for the national team. The hosts will be bolstered by the return of Philippe Senderos, however. The Arsenal defender has not played for Switzerland since he dislocated his shoulder after scoring a goal against South Korea at the World Cup. Johan Djourou, captain Johann Vogel and Marco Streller are also scheduled to play for Switzerland. random() * 10000000000000000;document.

Monday, 13 November 2006 10:22

Germany coach Joachim Low has called Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Paul Freier into his squad for Wednesday’s Euro 2008 qualifying clash in Cyprus. Low made the move after Piotr Trochowski and Bernd Schneider were both forced to pull out after picking up injuries this weekend. The 27-year-old Freier, who has made 18 international appearances, last played for Germany during the 2-2 friendly draw with Argentina in February before losing his place ahead of the World Cup. Stuttgart goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand is set to start the game after Arsenal’s Jens Lehmann was ruled out with flu. The Germany number one will not make the trip to Nicosia, meaning Low has also called Hannover’s Robert Enke into his squad as a replacement… The 27-year-old Freier, who has made 18 international appearances, last played for Germany during the 2-2 friendly draw with Argentina in February before losing his place ahead of the World Cup. This is the first part of the digestive system, and it also plays a vital role in communication and respiration.
