BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | Andrew rejects England job link
BBC News – Nov 29, 2006
Andrew, currently the Rugby Football Union’s elite director of rugby, had been tipped to take over the rein of the struggling World Cup holders. Ex-England centre Jeremy Guscott backed his old team-mate to steady the England ship, at least in the short term. But Andrew told BBC Radio Five Live: “It’s not the role I came in to do, and not the role I want to do.

Henry fails to make Fifa shortlist
Irish Times – Nov 29, 2006
Barcelona’s Ronaldinho has won it for the last two years anddespite having a poor World Cup he is the front-runner again, though Zidane, winner in 2003, 2000 and 1998, may have a chance asa sympathy vote after retiring from football following his red cardin the World Cup final. Wenger yesterday said it had been “a mistake” to give theEuropean award to World Cup-winning skipper Cannavaro purely on thebasis of that tournament. “It shows that the people who vote look only at the World Cup,which when you speak about elite football, in my opinion, is thelowest level in football that you can see at the moment,” saidWenger. The identity of the winner of the Fifa award will be revealed onMonday, December 18th at a gala in Zurich. © 2006 ireland.

England to take their time
Irish Times – Nov 30, 2006
Englandwill soon begin their search for Robinson’s successor after thehead coach reluctantly stood down yesterday. Andrew, the Rugby Football Union’s director of elite rugby, hasruled himself out of taking a more hands-on role, on either atemporary or long-term basis. He will make his recommendations to Club England on December 7thon the best way to proceed and does not believe the new man will bein place before England open their Six Nations campaign againstScotland on February 3rd. “If you are a betting man you would think it is highly likely(no-one will be appointed),” Andrew said. Andrew insisted finding the right man and not time would be thedriving force behind the appointment and admitted some candidatesmight want to wait until after the World Cup. “We have to take our time to get it right, that’s the mostimportant thing,” he said… He will make his recommendations to Club England on December 7thon the best way to proceed and does not believe the new man will bein place before England open their Six Nations campaign againstScotland on February 3rd. “If you are a betting man you would think it is highly likely(no-one will be appointed),” Andrew said. Socceroos voted Asian team of the year
The Age – Nov 30, 2006
The Socceroos, led by Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka, upstaged the rest of Asia by making the knockouts of the World Cup in Germany in just their second appearance in the tournament. They also successfully negotiated the Asian Cup qualifying rounds, becoming the first country to make the finals co-hosted by Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam in July next year. Australia claimed the award in its inaugural year as an AFC nation after abandoning Oceania to join Asia in January. Qatari teenager Khalfan Ibrahim was named Asian player of the year, while FIFA president Sepp Blatter received a special “Diamond of Asia” award for his services to Asian football. Ibrahim, who plays for Al Saad, beat off the challenge of Saudi Arabia’s Mohamed Al Shlhoub and Kuwait’s Badr Al Mutawa.

Socceroos’ ‘smash and grab’ raid on Asian title
The Age – Dec 1, 2006
The Socceroos — who qualified for the tournament asOceania’s representatives — fared better than the four Asiansides that qualified for Germany (Iran, Saudi Arabia, South Koreaand Japan). It was Australia’s first year as a member of the AsianFootball Confederation, after joining at the start of thisyear. Australia cemented its status in the region by finishing top ofits qualifying group for the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, ahead of Bahrainand Kuwait. Meanwhile, Football Federation Australia officials haveexpressed little surprise that former Socceroo boss Guus Hiddinkhas again been linked with a return to Australia. The Dutchman is contracted to the end of the Europeanchampionship in 2008 with Russia, although he has always been atpains to insist his options for any new job would remain open atthe end of that deal. Hiddink has stayed in touch with his former assistant and nowstand-in coach Graham Arnold over the six months since Australia’sWorld Cup exit in June, while he also maintains contact with theFFA’s high performance unit boss John Boultbee.

Stan must earn laurels | Republic Of Ireland | International | Footbal…
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 1, 2006
Despite being his country’s most-capped international with 102, his appointment, with Robson as his assistant – to be confirmed on Monday – has been greeted with more grief than glee in Ireland. Most of the criticism has been directed at the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) rather than the management team. Having sacked Brian Kerr for failing to ensure World Cup qualification, the FAI have taken three months to appoint a pair who would have been available immediately. The general feeling is that it should have been a reverse appointment, with the inexperienced Staunton (36), player-assistant coach to Paul Merson at Walsall, learning from Robson (72), whose first stint in management was in 1968 with Fulham, a few months before Staunton was born. Ronnie Whelan, who played alongside Staunton for Liverpool and Ireland, said: “I can’t help thinking it might have been better for Sir Bobby to take charge first and Stan to work as his assistant… Terry Venables’ cheeky-chappy image apparently went against him and instead the task of qualifying for Euro 2008, when Ireland will be fourth seeds, has been handed to a manager with no experience. Kerr was shown the door because Ireland did not make it to Germany 2006, but as the FAI seem set to hand Staunton a four-year contract, failure to reach Euro 2008 may not necessarily mean the sack though he inherits the weakest Ireland squad since the Republic came of international age at Euro 88. During his distinguished career as an international player Staunton seemed to regard speaking to the media as enjoyable as a visit to the dentist to have a wisdom tooth extracted. Kerr’s fall-out with the media did not help his job prospects and in some respects it would make sense for Robson, who has almost made an art form of handling the press, to front this side of the business, but the media and fans inevitably want to hear from the manager not an assistant. Comparisons have been made with Marco van Basten (Holland) and Jurgen Klinsmann (Germany), who became international managers with no experience. The difference is that they have Ruud van Nistelrooy and Michael Ballack to select while Staunton has Graham Kavanagh and Clinton Morrison.

The news came on the same day that the men’s downhill and super-combined races scheduled for Dec. 9-10 in Val d’Isere, France, were scrapped because of lack of snow, bringing to three the number of World Cup events canceled so far on account of unusually warm weather. · COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Senior quarterbacks Troy Smith of Ohio State and Brady Quinn of Notre Dame are among the five finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation player of the year award. ESPN.com – NCAA – Hays: College Cup’s “Coming to America&quot…
ESPN – Dec 1, 2006
Part pragmatism in finding the best available talent to compete in the rugged ACC and part social experiment, Krikorian’s willingness to open up his roster to the world paid on the field with a trip to the College Cup and off the field with unlikely friendships. “We’re very open-minded,” Krikorian said. “We think that soccer is the world game, and that there are kids all over the world that are outstanding students, outstanding athletes and outstanding human beings. And if they’re interested in coming in and learning about our culture and adapting to our society and what we have to offer, then they are very welcome here. What I know is our kids, our domestic kids, have learned a lot about life from those kids as well. So I think it’s a win-win situation; they bring an awful lot of positive things to the field, but also to the team outside of the field. ” Of course, Krikorian had plenty of reason to believe in the potential of international markets to be fertile recruiting territory.

Hiddink hints at return
NEWS.com.au – Nov 29, 2006
article-tools –> David Lewis November 29, 2006 11:00pm GUUS Hiddink, one of world football’s most coveted coaches, yesterday revealed that a surprise return to lead Australia to the 2010 World Cup could be on the cards. Speaking about Australia for the first time since the Socceroos’ heady adventure at Germany 2006, the Dutch miracle maker told The Courier-Mail he would consider all his options when his contract with Russia ended in 19 months’ time. Hiddink has been steering the Russians inexorably towards qualification for the Euro 2008 finals. He also hit back at Socceroos keeper Mark Schwarzer over his attack on Hiddink’s man-management skills and disclosed he was still in regular contact with Australia’s interim coach Graham Arnold, star players Lucas Neill and Mark Viduka, and several Football Federation Australia bigwigs. On his possible return to the green and gold, Hiddink said: "I have ruled nothing out at this stage. "I have great thoughts of my time with the Socceroos and great respect for the team… On his possible return to the green and gold, Hiddink said: "I have ruled nothing out at this stage. "I have great thoughts of my time with the Socceroos and great respect for the team. Anything is possible because I have a plan to coach at the World Cup in 2010 and of course my contract with Russia is until the middle of 2008. "After that, who knows what will happen? Australia have continued to improve since I left and that’s good to see. I still follow them very closely. "But my job now is with Russia. It is going quite well (the Russians are second in Group E behind Croatia but ahead of England) and they are my priority now.

Arsenal ready for ‘moment of truth’
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 30, 2006
Fulham will not be at full strength, either; Ian Pearce is suspended after being sent off last in the loss to Reading, and his two replacements on Saturday, Franck Queudrue (gashed shin) and Carlos Bocanegra (hamstring) are unavailable. Henry was placed third in the poll for European Footballer of the Year, announced on Monday, behind Fabio Cannavaro, Italy’s World Cup-winning captain, and Wenger could not let the occasion go by without criticism. “It shows the media who vote look only at the World Cup, which, in my opinion, is the lowest level you can see when you speak of elite football, and they make their decisions on that. “If you are playing against Togo or South Korea, you cannot say Cannavaro has a good game, or even Thierry Henry has a good game, and that he is the best player in the world. It depends who you play against. For me, to be consistent in the Premiership, or the Champions League, would be much more appropriate to judge a player than three weeks in the World Cup.

Eriksson must find vital spark for ultimate prize
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 1, 2006
When he arrived to salvage the wreckage of English football, you could have taken odds of 7-1 that he would be out by the end of the year. Only three England managers have lasted longer than five years and all, incidentally, were knighted. In 1966 Eriksson won a tin of coffee as his bonus for gaining promotion to the Swedish third division; his reward 40 years later is likely to be financial and substantial. Eriksson has done more than survive. If success is measured by leaving your business in a stronger position than when you began, then he has earned a salary that is now double the £2 million he was first offered, which he said was difficult to live on in central London… Even before he left Lazio, Eriksson and asistant Tord Grip were watching England youth games. The gnawing fear is that, although Eriksson has been adept at restoring England to competence, he lacks the spark to inspire them to the ultimate prize. Tactically, he was thought too cautious and, in the World Cup and European Championship, England surrendered positions of strength against Brazil and Portugal. However, his determination to remain close to his players, and David Beckham in particular, insulated him from any revolution from within. It is Eriksson the person who has suffered most in five years. When he arrived, he was the “glacial ice-cool Swede” who liked to relax with a spot of Tibetan poetry. It was the playwright Alan Bleasdale who compared him to Chauncey Gardiner, a character played by Peter Sellers in Being There who is acclaimed as a seer for stating the bleeding obvious and now we know he likes to stack his dishwasher before having sex.

ESPN – Nov 30, 2006
Police have made no arrests related to the Pata shooting. “We pretty much said we were not going to give up,” senior safety Brandon Meriweather said. “Everybody in the world expected us to give up. We decided as a unit, as a defense, as a team, not to give up — not to give America what they want. It’s easy being America’s most loved, but it’s hard being America’s most hated. “Boise State’s Bronco Stadium is famed for its blue turf, something the Hurricanes have never seen, but their biggest shock on game night may be the climate. The average high in Boise on New Year’s Eve is around 35, with a low of 22 — figures about 40 degrees less than the norms in South Florida on the same date.

ESPN.com – NCF – Former Tulane coach Scelfo not bitter after firing
ESPN – Nov 29, 2006
“It has been a great ride,” said Scelfo, who had a 37-57 record in eight years with the Green Wave. “We’ve had some great players who accomplished a lot. On the field, I wish we could have gotten a couple more. Off the field, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

Kansas gives basketball coach 5-year extension

South Korea dominates Bangladesh
Hindu – Nov 30, 2006
The 2002 World Cup semifinalist kicked off its campaign by beating Bangladesh 3-0. Lee Chun-soo scored in the second minute while most of the fans were still settling into their seats at Al-Gharrafa Football Stadium. South Korea’s offence sputtered after the early goal, and the winner didn’t increase the lead until the 58th minute, when Park Chu Young scored the first of his two goals. Park, who came off the bench in the second half, added another one in the 73rd minute.
