CL Group D: AS Roma – FC Shakhtar Donetsk – Dec 9, 2006
Now they find themselves in a group which they can at least finish as second if they manage to show on the pitch all the quality the team possesses. Only Valencia can in theory give them a run for their money, but Olympiakos and Shakhtar Donetsk are definitely not on the same level of the Giallorossi. However, the Italian club has always failed to live up to its expectations, and that is probably due to the fact that they are not used to playing in such high-profile competitions, despite the fact that Roma are full of world-class players. Now is their chance to reach the last 16 and hopefully even aim higher if things go their way and concentration is not left behind. Better ConditionDespite Roma being the stronger team on paper, Shakhtar Donetsk started their season in July and are clearly in a much better condition than their opponents. Roma were poor in their pre-season, but seemed to be cruising towards a comfortable win in the Italian supercup, before Inter overturned the 0-3 into a 4-3 win, thus proving that the Giallorossi are currently in a dire physical condition.

CL Group G Preview: Hamburger SV-Arsenal – Dec 9, 2006
But since the new campaign got underway all the Gunners have won are compliments for their impressive new stadium, though they did dispose of Dynamo Zagreb in a qualifier to take their place in the group stage of the Champions League for the ninth consecutive season. Hamburg SV, who finished third in the Bundesliga last season, and came through a tricky qualifier against side Osasuna on away goals, have opened the current domestic campaign with three straight draws, leaving them four points behind leaders FC Nürnberg (who are tied on seven points with Bayern Munich and Schalke 04). Throw in the two draws in the CL qualifiers and an extra-time defeat by Stuttgart Kickers in the German Cup at the weekend, and Hamburg have not won in six starts. In the Premiership, Arsenal are languishing in the bottom four with two points from three games, already ten behind leaders Manchester United, who have played one game more, and who entertain the Gunners at Old Trafford on Sunday. Of course, it is still early days, and while both sides are mildly concerned rather than panicking about not having chalked up a domestic win yet this season, a defeat on Wednesday will nudge them closer towards media talk of a “crisis. ”
Longevity In The Top Flight
The two clubs are classic representatives of their respective national Leagues, with Hamburg the only team never to have been relegated from the Bundesliga – a record that has earned them the epithet The Dinosaur. Arsenal have enjoyed continuous membership of England’s top flight since being elected to the old First Division in 1919 on the resumption of League football after the First World War.

CL Group F Preview: FC Copenhagen – SL Benfica – Dec 9, 2006
A brief flirtation with the good ol’ days ended in sadness as Sacchi’s Milan retained their title in the tight 1990 Final. Since then Benfica has been through hard and lean times, going 14 years without even so much as a domestic League trophy until Trapattoni led the Encarnados to glory once more in 2005. Ronald Koeman took over from the Italian tactician, not able to retain the domestic title as FC Porto got their revenge, but the spirited performance in last year’s Champions League that included eliminating two other Great Reads – Manchester United and Liverpool – has sent hopes of a return to glory rising. Simão Sabrosa is still at Da Luz despite almost signing for Liverpool last December and Valencia a few weeks ago. The number 20’s talents can also be backed up this year as Rui Costa has returned home after 12 years in Italy. Benfica had to get past Austria Vienna in the recent (easy) qualifier, and now Fernando Santos is honing his boys for what they hope will be a third Champions League trophy Team News

Staunton vows to learn from touchline ban
Ireland Online – Dec 9, 2006
The 37-year-old was dismissed from the dug-out in the Euro 2008 qualifying loss to Germany on September 2. He kicked a bottle of water in anger with 15 minutes of the game remaining and was admonished by referee Luis Medina Cantalejo. Staunton will now be forced to watch from the stands when the Republic head to Nicosia next month. ?Of course I regret it,? Staunton said at the FIFA World Cup Symposium in Berlin. ?It was a silly thing to do… I got the one-match ban and I just have to get on with it. ?Staunton remains confident his troops can cope with his absence. ?It is not a nice thing to happen but I don?t think it is going to affect us in any way,? he added. ?I?ll be there to train them for the three or four days that we?ve got them and in the end there is not a lot I can do anyway once they cross that white line. So I am expecting another strong, positive performance. ?Staunton had come under fire following a 4-0 home trashing at the hands of Holland in mid-August.

CL Group G Preview: FC Porto – CSKA Moscow – Dec 9, 2006
This soon changed in 1987 as Artur Jorge led FC Porto to an electrifying 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 1987 European Cup. Porto went on to also hoist the European Super Cup after beating Ajax, following the conquests up with the Intercontinental Cup with a victory of Uruguayans Peñarol. The flurry of titles came to an abrupt end at continental and Intercontinental levels until José Mourinho started to show his Special Touch with the 2003 win over Celtic that won the club’s first and only UEFA Cup. 2004 saw Mourinho helming Porto to a Champions League win that meant that the Dragões had equalled Benfica by winning two European Cups, the victims being Didier Deschamp’s modest AC Monaco after an initial 1-3 defeat to Real Madrid was followed up by a campaign where Mourinho’s men never lost another game.

O’Neill Gives Agathe Villa Contract – Dec 9, 2006
O’Neill told the club’s website: “I think he has the talent and hunger to get in the side and do a job. “This is a big chance and challenge for him, he’s got the deal now with the chance to earn something longer term. ”
Agathe is due to play for Villa’s reserves against Portsmouth on Monday night, with O’Neill insisting: “He’s not just here to make up the numbers. “He played brilliantly for a number of years at Celtic but for whatever reason, found himself out of favour. “That happens sometimes but Didier still feels he has plenty to offer. “He’s naturally fit and he’s very quick. When his confidence is up he can run past most people.

Ogbuke Set for Arsenal In January – Dec 9, 2006
com had reported that Arsenal have been hot on the heels of the 20-year-old Nigerian after their scouts have repeatedly watched the player during the Norwegian league matches involving FC Lyn-Oslo. Ogbuke is already being valued in the region of £4 million. It is widely believed that Ogbuke’s eminent move to last season’s UEFA Champions League finalists may not be unconnected with the close ties between Arsenal and Sports Entertainment Media, the outfit of Shittu. Also, England’s The Sun Online had reported last month that Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with a race to sign Ogbuke.

CL Group E Preview: Lyon – Real Madrid – Dec 9, 2006
Tiago, Juninho, Malouda and Govou are set to support Wiltord and Fred, with Carew likely to start on the bench. With Coupet between the posts, and the likes of Clerc, Cris and Abidal in defense, the French Champions have it in them to mix it with the best in the business. Real Madrid
Michel Salgado misses out on this trip after failing to recover from the knee injury suffered against Levante, while Ronaldo is still not available, though almost recovered following his leg operation in July. Young midfielder Javi Garcia has been named in the 20-strong squad, as has their promising young keeper Adan. However, Ivan Helguera has been left out, yet again, due to a technical decision. Other than Cicinho coming in on the right for Salgado, there should be no changes to the squad which turned out for the last two Liga encounters, though Reyes could keep Raul on the bench after impressing Capello during the second half against Levante.

Henry Out Of Hamburg Clash – Dec 9, 2006
He was, however, expected to be fine for the clash, but continued to experience pain during training, and Wenger didn’t wasnt to risk him. He is now set to be out of action for at least another three days or so, ruling him out of the squad that will leave for Hamburg today. “Thierry Henry is not playing,” said Wenger to the club’s website. “He has a foot injury, he doesn’t know how he got it but he got it during the game against Italy… He was, however, expected to be fine for the clash, but continued to experience pain during training, and Wenger didn’t wasnt to risk him. Interview: Landon Donovan, Los Angeles Galaxy – Dec 9, 2006
His team had just dropped three important points in a 2-1 loss against a Houston Dynamo team that they had defeated just four days earlier in the US Open Cup semifinals. This loss did not sit well with America’s soccer poster boy. Since returning from the World Cup in Germany—an unmitigated disaster, for the team and the player—Landon has been on fire, scoring seven goals and dragging the struggling Galaxy back into playoff contention. Reunited with his former coach in San Jose, Frank Yallop, he is playing like the Captain America and face of US Soccer once again. Many have said that he needs a move to a “bigger” and “better” league in order to reach his full potential. So he can lead US Soccer to the next level.

CL Group D Preview: Olympiacos – Valencia – Dec 9, 2006
Previous Encounters
In the 2000-01 Champions League group stage Valencia won 2-1 at the Mestalla in September 2000 but Olympiacos gained revenge with a 1-0 home victory thanks to Predrag Djordjević’s penalty only to see Valencia ended up topping the group en route to a second successive final. An inferior head-to-head record with Olympique Lyonnais cost Olympiacos the second place. TEAM NEWS
Olympiacos: Apart from Erol Bulut, not due back until 2007, Trond Sollied faces no serious problem for Tuesday’s match as Michalis Konstantinou and Predrag Djordjevic have returned back in full shape, while Rivaldo has also recovered from a knee-injury but he was rested against PAOK last Saturday ahead of the Valencia encounter. Injured Grigoris Georgatos is rated extremely doubtful to face the Spanish outfit and along with Marco Ne and Michalis Kapsis are proceeding with their recovery program. Valencia: Joaquin will miss the club’s first two games in the group stage, against Olympiacos and Roma, as he carries forward a two-match suspension picked up last season with Real Betis. Albelda is also out after fracturing his cheekbone during Spain’s 3-2 defeat by Northern Ireland on September 6. Albelda underwent minor injury in Madrid after the match.

The word nerve has its origin in the ancient Sanskrit word ‘nauree’. This actually meant a fibrous thread or a string. Understandably the Greek physicians, who borrowed this word from Sanskrit, applied it to any part of the body that looked like a fibrous thread.
