Woodward says winning World Cup was the worst thing for English rugby
International Herald Tribune – Dec 10, 2006
That’s the view of Clive Woodward, who said he coached England to the World Cup title in spite of, rather than because of, the Rugby Football Union. England is without a coach after Andy Robinson quit on Nov. He’d lost 13 of 22 matches since replacing Woodward in 2004, during which England slipped from first to seventh in the world rankings. “What has happened over the last few weeks was so predictable,” Woodward told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

MasterCard wins FIFA case
TVNZ – Dec 8, 2006
has won a US federal lawsuit challenging a dealto switch sponsorship of the World Cup soccer tournament to rivalVisa International. The judge ordered soccer’s governing body, the FederationInternationale de Football Association (FIFA), to drop its plannedeight-year deal with Visa and grant MasterCard advertising andsponsorship rights to the World Cup for the period from 2007 to2014. Losing the sponsorship of the World Cup, the world’s most viewedsports event, would have badly hurt MasterCard’s competitiveposition against Visa, US District Judge Loretta Preska inManhattan said in her ruling. Visa, which already sponsors theOlympic Games, is the world’s largest credit card system, followedby MasterCard. “MasterCard’s loss of the next FIFA World Cup sponsorship wouldbe, in its now-famous words, Priceless,” the judge wrote, referringto the credit card company’s long-running advertising campaign. MasterCard sued FIFA in April, accusing the soccer organisationof breach of contract over the Visa deal, which was set to begin inJanuary 2007. MasterCard, which had sponsored the tournament for 16years, contended that it had a right of first refusal on futuresponsorship pacts… MasterCard, which had sponsored the tournament for 16years, contended that it had a right of first refusal on futuresponsorship pacts. The decision, released late on Wednesday, followed a bench trialby the judge. In her ruling, she said FIFA negotiators “liedrepeatedly to MasterCard,” including when they assured the companythat FIFA “would not sign a deal for the post-2006 sponsorshiprights with anyone else unless it could not reach agreement withMasterCard. FIFA said it was “dismayed” by the ruling and it wouldappeal. The group said it is “convinced that at all times it acted ingood faith” and will “vigorously pursue its case. ” FIFA, which isbased in Zurich, said an arbitration tribunal there “is competentto hear this dispute, and FIFA awaits the outcome of thisproceeding. Visa was not a defendant in the suit but had triedunsuccessfully to intervene, arguing that it was an indispensableparty to the case.

The changing nature of politics
Jamaica Observer – Dec 9, 2006
Captain Burrell lost in dramatic fashion to Mr Boxhill three years ago, following accusations by leaders in the parishes and clubs that he had lost touch with the grass roots of the sport. And, that he treated local football leaders with arrogance and disrespect. But dissatisfaction and disaffection soon set in with Mr Boxhill, following Jamaica’s failure in the FIFA 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign, a chronic paucity of funds that has afflicted his administration and a public perception, perhaps misplaced, of an absence of vision. News earlier this year that construction work had started on the long awaited FIFA-funded football academy at Munro in St Elizabeth appeared to have little effect in football circles. But Mr Boxhill pulled off a major coup in recent weeks when he coaxed the Government and sections of the private sector into a partnership that has now allowed him to sign a deal with the famous Mexico-based Serbian coach, Bora Milutinovic. This to guide the Reggae Boyz through their Back-to-Africa, World Cup qualifying campaign set to start early 2008. Mr Boxhill would have gained even more ground this week with the news that brewers Red Stripe will sponsor the Reggae Boyz campaign to the tune of J$100 million.

Disgruntled Eriksson turns his back on Fifa
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 9, 2006
The former England manager was due to speak at the Fifa international football symposium along with other international managers, such as Italy’s World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi and France’s Raymond Domenech. However, Uefa president Lennart Johansson, a friend and fellow Swede, revealed that Eriksson had decided to dodge the meeting. Johansson said: “He has had enough. He thinks people have being saying what a s**t he is and how incompetent he is, and that, just because England have now won a match, people are saying how bad he was… The former England manager was due to speak at the Fifa international football symposium along with other international managers, such as Italy’s World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi and France’s Raymond Domenech. Zeffirelli returns in triumph | Special reports | Guardian Unlimited
Guardian Unlimited – Dec 9, 2006
The Italian prime minister, Romano Prodi, and the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, were both there. So too were actors and fashion designers in abundance – Fanny Ardant, Krizia, John Richmond and Donatella Versace, who arrived with Rupert Everett. More unexpectedly, the audience included Marco Materazzi, the Inter and Italy footballer who won notoriety for butting Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup final. Zeffirelli’s set – laden with 200 kilos of powdered gold – made a not dissimilar impact. La Stampa reported that, as the curtain went up, the audience sat “open mouthed”. To evoke an air of nebulous mystery, the director used a device he last employed in a 1980s production of Turandot: horizontal bars suspended above the stage that, in this instance, reflected the lights in golden sparks. Several critics, however, complained the effect was a discredited “exotic” view of Egypt, similar to that found in the works of the 19th-century Orientalist painters.

And comments from abroad have done little but fuel the fire. Beckenbauer, for example, concluded his opinions about 2010 with the following, possibly racist, addendum: “These are not South African problems, these are African problems. ” The world, it seems, was prepared to give Africa its football tournament, but is it prepared to let it own it?It is a public holiday – Heritage Day – and Cape Town in September is fresh and blustery. On Grand Parade, President Mbeki speaks to a small but vociferous audience about the need to value the inter-cultural make-up of the Western Cape through an understanding of ubuntu (the humanist local philosophy that can roughly be understood as “people are people through people”). He introduces his colleagues on the platform to the crowd. These include Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan, Western Cape premier Ibrahim Rasool, and Cape Town’s executive mayor Helen Zille. To the President’s apparent embarrassment, the introduction of the last of these precipitates an orchestrated volley of boos.

The Dutchman, who was recommended to Football FederationAustralia chairman Frank Lowy by former Socceroo boss Guus Hiddink,is not buying into the perennial “cultural debate” about the styleof the Australian game as it seeks to build on the Hiddink legacyfrom the last World Cup. Eriksson wants return to management

It will happen, but I don’t know when. “Because you miss football, you know. To fight with other managers, to fight with the players, to fight with the press and I think I’m too young to retire. ”
Eriksson spent five-and-a-half years in charge of England, leading them to two World Cup quarter-finals and also the last eight at Euro 2004. He left with his popularity having plummetted on the back of England’s uninspired performances in the summer’s World Cup finals, and with his personal life having attracted undesirable headlines. Eriksson’s earnings made him one of the world’s best-paid managers, and he may struggle to find a job which is as financially rewarding. “I have had some offers, not the right ones,” Eriksson told TakeSport, free with the Evening Standard in London every Friday afternoon… “Because you miss football, you know. Dropping the pilot
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 8, 2006
As a dead ball ‘expert’ alone, you can’t seriously expect to be carried by a team intent on winning trophies. Beckham, once, was a useful member of a Football team. He hasn’t been, for some 2 years. It’s as simple as that!

For Sven to allow his socializing, with Beckham, ‘Posh’, and their ‘influential friends, to influence his team selection was scandalous in the extreme. Everyone could see (and many opined) that Beckham deserved to be dropped long ago… They were painful to hear. I am no soccer pundit but suppose Beckham’s best playing days will be over by the time the next World Cup comes round – presumably the goal for which the England Team is constantly being rebuilt. That said, maturity & experience also count when leading and balancing the personalities in the England team – and there are four years to the next World Cup. It may be that Beckham will develop in other ways as a celebrity beyond playing football – but the McClaren comments must have dented David’s immediate bankability for sponsors. Off the pitch Beckham is at his best when not talking. It will be interesting to see where Victoria, who has been something of a Svengali for him, and his advisers now take the promotional aspect of his work.

Thanks for the memory, Jonny
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 8, 2006
In November 2003, the England rugby squad, and Jonny Wilkinson in particular, were the toast of the nation, feted by all for bringing us our first World Cup of any kind since 1966. That final against Australia was a classic, and had a kind of amazing inevitability about it. Yes, Jonny missed three dropped goals – but kicked the one that mattered. Rosemary MarshallNew Malden, Surrey advertisement… Now they express wonder at why it all went so horribly wrong. We in Wales may not be much good at football, but at least we got our stadium built on time and at the asking price of less than a sixth of what Wembley has cost already. Now in early August we start to get the whole mega-bucks charade rammed down our throats all over again. How totally depressing. Giles SmithTenby, Wales Read stumps criticsSir – I am disappointed that the comments by commentators and journalists alike on Chris Read’s performance in the recent Test match have been somewhat muted. Yes, there were mentions of his contribution with the bat, especially in the second innings and rightly so, but it was his keeping that I thought merited much more favourable comment.

Spanish clubs furious over doping allegations
Guardian Unlimited – Dec 8, 2006
Athletico Bilbao’s Carlos Gurpegui [in 2003] and Celta Vigo’s Giovanella [in 2005] have been suspended for positive tests [for anabolic steroids], But it is difficult to believe that clubs such as Real and Barcelona got Fuentes to plan comprehensive, systematic doping policies like the ones in, for example, the Liberty Seguros cycling team. “Amid rumours of increased use by footballers of EPO and other blood doping agents, Fifa introduced random blood tests for the 2002 World Cup. Yet despite the questions raised by Operation Puerto, it decided to abandon these for the 2006 tournament and return to urine-only tests. All 228 urine samples taken during the last World Cup came back negative. html –>· You’ve read the piece, now have your say. Email your comments to.

Bob Bradley Takes Over US Soccer Team
Washington Post – Dec 8, 2006
Bradley, the coach of Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA team, was to be announced Friday as the interim coach of the national team, a soccer official with knowledge of the decision told the AP. He also spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not been made… Gulati said two coaches currently with European jobs were among the five finalists, and reaffirmed their interest this week in taking over the national team as long as no announcement was made now. Lyon’s Gerard Houllier has a contract that runs out at the end of the season and Manchester United assistant Carlos Queiroz has been coveted by the USSF in the past. Klinsmann, who coached Germany to the World Cup semifinals, essentially had been the only candidate the USSF had been dealing with. A member of Germany’s World Cup championship team in 1990, he lives in California and would have instantly increased the level of respect for U. soccer among its opponents. “How big of a blow?” Gulati said.

Magnusson pays tribute to West Ham’s history
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 10, 2006
He admits his interest is at an early stage but says he decided to make his move after becoming fascinated by the club’s history and tradition — in particular Upton Park’s strong influence on England’s 1966 World Cup victory. Magnusson said: “I have always had a soft spot for West Ham – their trademark for many years was good attacking football, and that’s what I like. It is also unbelievable how many good football talents they have honed in east London.

Managers must be adventurous
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 8, 2006
Hopefully Chelsea will be challenged, several clubs will tussle for Champions League places and relegation will not be confirmed until the last kick of the campaign. Although the Premiership is an excellent and well-marketed product, the World Cup has confirmed the development of English players is a subject that needs immediate attention. England’s performances showed no imagination, little tactical awareness and poor technical ability. The Premiership is the best league in the world with Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool all fluid in attack, innovative in their strategies, organised when not in possession and littered with individual brilliance. Unfortunately these sides, apart from United, are managed by foreign coaches and contain overseas players who are technically superior to most of ours. To improve our players, managers of sides outside this elite must expand their tactical knowledge and be more adventurous.
