BBC News – Dec 12, 2006
Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have been two of the high-profile figures who have struggled since England went out to Portugal in the last eight. “If you look at all the players who played in the World Cup, individually they have all had a hangover,” he said. “They have all had a disappointment and loss of form and do take five or six months before they are back on form. ”

Liverpool skipper Gerrard and his Chelsea midfield counterpart Lampard have only recently started to show signs of a revival. Lampard was heavily criticised as he struggled in the early part of the campaign, while Gerrard has admitted he only now feels he is getting back to his best.

He also said 13 of the starting side which he guided to World Cup victory in 2003 could still have been involved in the title defence if handled properly. “I think only Martin Johnson and Neil Back probably wouldn’t have made this World Cup if they’d been properly looked after by the system,” he said. “The players are just in bits, they’re playing too much rugby. ”

Woodward, now director of elite performance with the British Olympic Association, has been highly critical of the Rugby Football Union over the past few days and blamed its “system” for England’s current slump.

ESPN.com – NCF – Time Warner offers to carry Texas Bowl on NFL Network
ESPN – Dec 13, 2006
Rutgers, located in New Jersey, is coming off its best Big East season. The possible agreement to show the game would mark a temporary truce in a bigger battle that has kept the NFL channel off both cable systems. The NFL Network, owned by the National Football League, is available in roughly 40 million of the nation’s 111 million homes, mainly through satellite TV providers. Time Warner Cable, a unit of Time Warner Inc. , says the NFL charges too much to carry the network. The cable operator and the network also have feuded over the NFL’s demands the channel be featured on Time Warner’s most widely available subscriber package, which is already at full capacity. Time Warner says it would like to offer the channel on a digital tier, but the NFL Network has declined.

7 has scored many vital goals in his career
Since his move from Karlsruhe to Bayern in 1992, Scholl has achieved everything that can be achieved in German club football. Apart from his eight league medals, Scholl also helped Bayern to five German Cups as well as the 1996 UEFA Cup and 2001 Champions League titles. In early 2001, he was voted Player of the Year 2000 by the professional players of the First and Second Bundesliga, and in May 2005, fans voted him one of the eleven greatest Bayern players of all time

An international career of disappointments

Scholl’s only disappointment comes from his time with the German national team. Ill-timed injuries meant he never made an appearance at a World Cup and he made just three appearances at Euro 1996 in England, when he was substituted each time. He played in the quarter-final, semi-final, and final… He won his last international cap in February 2002 when Germany beat Israel 7-1 in Kaiserslautern. Before the 2006 World Cup Campaign, more than 100,000 people signed an online petition — “Mehmet für Deutschland” — for his inclusion in Jürgen Klinsmann’s squad for the tournament on home soil. However, he was overlooked by his former international and club colleague.

“There is a worry that very, very rich individuals will acquire clubs then seek to acquire other clubs either through ownership or interest,” he said. “Fifa is very worried and so is Fifpro as one person having an interest in many clubs can be unhealthy. ”

West Ham controversially signed Argentina World Cup stars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano in a deal with Media Sports Investments, who own the rights to the two players. And Romanov’s management style at Hearts has angered Scottish players but appears to have been accepted by their foreign imports. “A player in a certain country might accept that treatment, while other players, particularly in western Europe where there is a tradition of players’ unions, might say I am moving on, I cannot take any more of this,” added Higgins.

Iraqis beat South Korea to gain final berth; host Qatar upsets Iran
International Herald Tribune – Dec 12, 2006
Host Qatar upset defending champion Iran 2-0 to reach the final for the first time. Qataris filled the Al-Sadd Football Stadium to see their team pull off the biggest upset of the soccer competition, beating the Iranians — who had been on a 15-game winning streak at the games — in a very physical match. It was the first time Qatar had made it to the semis. The Qataris controlled the pitch. Sebastion Quintana scored in the 28th minute, and in the second half Hussain Yaser Abdulrahman blasted in a shot from outside the area that deflected off a defender’s calf and sailed past goalkeeper Hassan Roudbarian’s hands into the right corner of the goal. Coach Dzemaludin Musovic said the home field advantage helped… “We should have scored the first goal. Then there would have been no problem. ” South Korea, making full use of captain Lee Chun-soo, a veteran of this year’s World Cup, dominated the first half, keeping the ball 66 percent of the time, outshooting the Iraqis 10-4 and creating several dangerous plays. Just 15 minutes into the game, forward Jung Jo-gook slammed a shot off a cross from Lee that curved to beat the Iraqi goalkeeper but hit the bar. Both teams turned up the pressure in the second half, with South Korea once again dominating possession. Lee had a narrow miss in the 70th minute, when his volley from just inside the area went wide. Increasingly desperate, the Koreans failed to find the net as the Iraqis stacked their defense and held on for the victory.

Strictly on the basis of their successive performances against Hungary, Jamaica, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Sweden and Ecuador, however, it would have taken a battalion of the world’s finest legal advocates to make a case for the justice of their arrival in the final rounds of the biggest international football tournament of all. The attitude represented by the words of Lampard and Beckham represents a culture of complacency at work, and it could be seen in the climactic shoot-out against Portugal, when three of England’s penalty takers failed with attempts in which the slackness of their body language and their shooting spoke of men who were ready to put their trust in the belief, as England players have believed for several generations, that their reputations alone would be enough to ensure their success. A successful apprenticeship in the upper reaches of English football wraps such an effective comfort blanket around a young player that he is seldom exposed to the harsh realities of the outside world, and never confronts those moments in which failure really does mean disaster. When they are called to summon reserves of resilience at moments of extreme pressure, they discover those reserves either do not exist or have been depleted by the demands of domestic football.
