Match Reports | 12.06.2006 USA Suspects Czech Republic Injuries Just…
Deutsche Welle – Dec 6, 2006
“The world of football is shrinking,” Arena added. “Players on these big teams are going back to their national teams and making them better. These teams are not intimidated like they were many years ago. ”

Arena noted that in 1990, when the US team ended a 40-year World Cup qualifying drought, it would have been unthinkable to beat a second-ranked Czech team. Now the Americans are fifth entering Monday’s Group E match at Gelsenkirchen. “Their players are the same as we are,” Arena said. “We’re pretty confident when we step on the field against the Czech Republic… “It’s very difficult to say. Of course there are always chances. ”

Baros was the top scorer in Euro 2004, when the Czechs reached the semi-finals, and his absence would be bad news for the team making its World Cup debut. But the Czechs have plenty of attacking options even if Baros is ruled out of the USA clash. “We have got good shooters in midfield, like Pavel Nedved and Tomas Rosicky,” Koller said. Meanwhile, US leading scorer Landon Donovan said it has taken him a week to adjust himself to the travel and building a routine in Germany. “Today is the first day I could sleep well and felt my legs under me the right way,” Donovan said Thursday.

Beckham has earned his golden years
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 8, 2006
England played much too deeply, and if you play that way you are not going to get the best out of Beckham, because his strength is in going forward and crossing the ball into dangerous areas. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard also suffered from tactics that were alien to them. Beckham did not play well in Germany, nor in the World Cup of 2002 or Euro 2004. But in those earlier tournaments he was clearly not fit, and it is not his fault that Sven-Goran Eriksson still picked him. One thing you can never accuse him of is laziness, though. When Beckham pulled on an England shirt, you could guarantee that he would work his socks off and give everything he had. He was clearly proud of being England captain, so this latest rejection is bound to hurt his ego.

Lampard looks to cap milestone match with a goal

“I put them away in a very safe place and they will only be got out to show the kids and grandkids. I don’t like people coming round seeing my caps in their face all the time. That is not my thing. “He admits that he did not expect to reach a half-century. After making his debut in a friendly at Sunderland in 1999, it took him four years to earn another appearance, years when the Manchester United trinity of David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes ran England’s midfield. Asked to name his most memorable England match, Lampard picks a defeat, the game that Zinedine Zidane snatched for France at the death at Euro 2004. “It was my first taste of a big competition… “He admits that he did not expect to reach a half-century. I will never forget the atmosphere going into the ground. It was a big disappointment in the end but that sticks out as the moment I realised what playing for England was all about.

Eriksson wants return to management
rte.ie – Dec 8, 2006
“Because you miss football, you know. To fight with other managers, to fight with the players, to fight with the press and I think I’m too young to retire. ”
Eriksson spent five-and-a-half years in charge of England, leading them to two World Cup quarter-finals and also the last eight at Euro 2004. He left with his popularity having plummetted on the back of England’s uninspired performances in the summer’s World Cup finals, and with his personal life having attracted undesirable headlines. Eriksson’s earnings made him one of the world’s best-paid managers, and he may struggle to find a job which is as financially rewarding. “I have had some offers, not the right ones,” Eriksson told TakeSport, free with the Evening Standard in London every Friday afternoon. “I want a club with ambition which wants to do things in a proper way… In Italy they kill you if you lost two games, but don’t kill you about your private life,” said the 58-year-old. “For me it is the sad thing about England. They kill you two times in England and you have to learn to live with that if you want to work here. You want to change that, but it is important to know they will not change me.

“It’s down to him to come back and get himself fit,” McCarthy said. “It’s whether he wants to do it here, or do it somewhere else. I’m hoping he comes back here and trains with us but I’m not certain. Healy last played for the Republic under Brian Kerr in the 2-0 Euro 2004 qualifying defeat to Switzerland in Basel.

World Cup fails to lift ad spend
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 9, 2006
5bn a year ago as a sharp increase in online and cinema spend helped offset weak growth in TV, radio and outdoor markets. The survey said: “The World Cup failed to provide the expected fillip to advertising industry with TV spend increase of 1pc – well below anticipated double-figures growth. Comparatively, TV spend was 5pc higher during Euro 2004. “It said the TV market was buoyant in April and May but the sector saw a 7pc decline in June, when the World Cup started. The survey encompasses TV spot advertising, press display, outdoor, internet display activity on the 20 most visited sites, direct mail, door drops, radio spot advertising and cinema media spend. Consistency has been his hallmark
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 1, 2006
Even though he had won 16 trophies as a club coach in Sweden, Portugal and Italy he was unknown to most of the English media and add the fact that he had not competed regularly with any of the managers in England, he began his international reign with a blank piece of paper. Initially the media stood off and watched and waited to get some idea as to how to get under his skin, while no competition with the managers meant no jealousies or hidden agendas. His first task was to rescue an ailing World Cup qualification quest, which was accomplished with a never-to-be forgotten 5-1 victory over Germany in Munich and a superb free-kick equaliser in the last minute against Greece by David Beckham at Old Trafford… The same criticism reared its head in the penalty shoot-out defeat to host country Portugal in the quarter-final of Euro 2004. Qualification for this year’s World Cup in Germany was accomplished with eight wins and one draw in a 10-game qualifying group and all people want to remember is the one defeat against Northern Ireland. Eriksson has the best competitive games record of any England manager and yet he will still be “hung, drawn and quartered” unless England come home with the World Cup. It is an impossible job!My feeling is that whatever happens in Germany he will move on to pastures new. He is shrewd and hard-nosed – perhaps motivated by money as well – but no one should deny the professionalism and consistency he has brought into the England squad.

“I wanted to leave the national team after two consecutive victories against Norway and Bosnia-Herzegovina and we managed it,” he said. “The best leaving present the guys can give me is to qualify for the [UEFA EURO 2008?] finals.
