Vatican wants to play priests in Serie A – Dec 20, 2006
He said: “We can recruit lads from the seminaries. I remember that in the World Cup of 1990 there were 42 players among the teams who made it to the finals who came from Salesian training centres all over the world. “If we just take the Brazilian students from our Pontifical universities we could have a magnificent squad. “Giovanni Trapattoni, the former Italian national team manager, who is in charge of Salzburg FC, has been mooted as a possible coach. In 2002, Trapattoni took bottles of holy water with him to the World Cup in Japan and South Korea to refresh the Italian team. Sebes played to the squad?s attacking strengths in
his use of the likes of Ferenc Puskas and Sandor Kocsis. The ?Magical Magyars?
went to the 1954 World Cup on the back of a four-year unbeaten run and their
loss in the final to West Germany is one of the game?s greatest upsets. Joseph ?Sepp? Herberger (West Germany)

German football?s reputation for robotic efficiency has its roots in the work
of Herberger, the coach who led them to their first World Cup success in 1954. He rebuilt the West German side after the Second World War and restored national
pride with the World Cup victory. He was criticised after an 8-3 loss to the
brilliant Hungarians early in the tournament but he was a shrewd tactician and
had rested several players. When they met again in the final in Bern, a
full-strength side ground down the favourites to win 3-2. Cesar Luis Menotti (Argentina)

The appointment of ?El Flaco? (The Thin One) as Argentina coach in the 1974
proved the catalyst for the World Cup triumphs of 1978 and 1986.

At a glitzy ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, 2003 beaten finalists China were lumped in the same group as Iran and Uzbekistan. They will also play co-hosts Malaysia. South Korea are alongside fellow World Cup side Saudi Arabia, the semi-finalists at the last Asian Cup, Bahrain, and co-host Indonesia. Australia, the most successful Asian team at the World Cup, are in the Asian Cup finals for the first time after abandoning Oceania in January this year, and will also face Oman and Thailand. As well as Qatar, Asian powerhouse Japan face off against United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. Australian coach Graham Arnold singled out Iraq as their toughest opponent. ?I?m very happy with our pool… There was last-minute drama when Saudi Arabia said it would not play in Thailand ?for diplomatic reasons? that were not fully explained, although it is believed to stem from the killing of a Saudi diplomat in Thailand in 1990. It meant the three-time champions could not be drawn in Thailand?s group, or Vietnam?s, as the winner of that group would play their quarter-final in Bangkok. Takeshi Ono, technical director at the Japan Football Association, said all groups were equally tough, highlighting the standard of football in Asia. ?We are just happy to be in the last 16,? he said. ?We realise there are no easy groups. Of course there is added pressure on us as the defending champions, but our philosophy is to take one game at a time and see how things develop. ? South Korea, who have failed to win the Asian Cup since 1960, have a tricky draw against Saudi Arabia and Bahrain with only the top two teams from each group moving into the knockout stages.

2006 saw consumer electronic goods sales push through the roof
Hindu – Dec 22, 2006
(PTI): Sound of cash registers ringing courtesy football world cup, merry associated with new beginnings and reviving old relationships, overseas buyouts and million dollar investments best describes year 2006 for the Indian consumer electronics industry. Looking back, the sector, which is aiming to expand its market size to $160 billion by 2016 from the current $22 billion, will be grateful to 2006 that it has taken a big step during the year toward achieving its goal. One of the biggest reasons to smile for the manufacturers is the phenomenal growth experienced by high-end products like the flat panel displays and plasma TVs, a key to achieving the target. The year saw revival of Sanyo-BPL relationship setting ambitious targets and the quadrennial event football World Cup helping the industry overcome the usual mid-season sales slump during June-July. Buoyed by the overwhelming response, Korean giant LG Electronics announced that it would cross Rs 10,000 crore in revenues in India during the fiscal 2006-07.

The Italians turned up in Germany their build-up blighted by the Serie A match-fixing scandal, but four long weeks later they left Berlin?s Olympic Stadium their heads held high after a drama-laden final defeat of France. The Azzurri negotiated their way to football?s greatest prize under the rocksteady and at times inspirational guidance of coach Marcello Lippi. His decision to haul on two strikers in extra time spelled the end of the road for the host nation Germany in Italy?s thrilling semi-final win leaving only Raymond Domenech?s band of Gallic geriatrics in their path. Like Italy France had taken time to build up steam, struggling through their group, but marshalled by Zinedine Zidane their campaign exploded in the knockout stages.

BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | English | Ashton vows to stick to his guns
BBC News – Dec 20, 2006
“I think we have bottomed out, if not there will be a lot of pain coming my way,” he said. “If all the players are fit and available England will punch their weight not only in the Six Nations but in the World Cup as well. “We will be going to the World Cup hopefully in a position to mount a very strong defence of it. It would be fantastic to be the first team to retain it, but there is a long way to go before then. ”

England’s director of elite rugby Rob Andrew said there are currently no plans to appoint a manager alongside Ashton. “We are looking forward, and I have no doubts whatsoever that Brian is the right guy to move England forward,” said Andrew. “It is really important everyone in the game now looks forward.

Mbeki defends 2010 preparations
BBC News – Dec 22, 2006
In his weekly newsletter to the ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Friday, Mbeki knocked back any suggestion the tournament would be held elsewhere and rejected fears that stadia would not completed on time. “The truth is that with regard to 2010, we have beaten all previous records with regard to the preparations for the successful hosting of the World Cup, including the benchmarks set by the highly successful 2006 World Cup in Germany,” said Mbeki. “I am happy to report that the joint efforts of Fifa, the Local Organising Committee and the South African government, have established solid foundations for what will be an exceptional event. ”

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has previously expressed misgivings about the lack of construction and renovation work on the 10 venues for the tournament. But Mbeki said building work at the stadium in Johannesburg, which will host the final, would start early next year, and earth-moving and piling operations were already underway in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Nelspruit. Mbeki also rubbished the notion “that some countries were already standing by to take over this responsibility from us, since it was certain that we would definitely fail to do the things Fifa required of us”… But Mbeki said building work at the stadium in Johannesburg, which will host the final, would start early next year, and earth-moving and piling operations were already underway in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Nelspruit. ability to stage the tournament. “Most fortunately, consistently,.

Australia plays down Asian Cup draw
The Age – Dec 21, 2006
Japan are favourites to top that group after winning the Asian Cup in 1992, 2000 and 2004, leaving them and Australia with a seemingly smooth path to the semi-finals. Their main rivals, South Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia and China, will battle for the other two spots in the more difficult bottom half of the draw. South Korea, Asian champions in 1956 and 1960 and World Cup semi-finalists fours years ago, were drawn in Group D with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Indonesia in what looks on paper to be the toughest pool. Saudi Arabia won the tournament in 1984, 1988 and 1996, but ended up in the same group as South Korea because they failed to secure a seeding and had to play their pool matches in Indonesia or Malaysia because of diplomatic issues. The Australians were relieved after avoiding the most difficult group and were drawn to play in Thailand, alleviating security concerns about going to Indonesia. “The only worry I had was about Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia and Iraq together would have made it a very tough group,” Arnold said… Iran won the title three times in a row from 1968 to 1976 but needed permission from the sport’s world governing body FIFA to play in the 2007 finals after they were initially banned because of alleged government interference. China made the final when they hosted the tournament in 2004 but struggled through qualifying and were trying to stay upbeat despite being drawn alongside Iran and with South Korea or Saudi Arabia lurking in the quarter-finals. “The draw is a very small factor in the tournament,” Chinese Football Association spokesman Dong Hua Dong said.

Ashton kicks off with rallying call – Dec 21, 2006
Rob Andrew was quick to decide that Ashton was not just the man for the moment but for the foreseeable future as well. Within 24 hours of Andy Robinson vacating the Twickenham premises three weeks ago, Andrew had approached Ashton, then England’s attack coach, about taking over. The RFU’s director of elite rugby declined to say whether any other figures had been approached. “I had no doubts Brian was the right guy,” Andrew said.

Fletcher dismisses resignation talk – Dec 20, 2006
Fletcher has coached England for the past seven years, and taken them from bottom in the Test rankings to second place, winning series against every country except India. Yet even successful coaches have shelf lives, something implied by the England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive David Collier. After the Ashes had been lost, Collier promised a review of the processes involving team England after the World Cup. Fletcher said: “I have my own cycles and every six months or so I review my situation – where I’ve been and where I want to go – and I’ll stick to that. When I won the Ashes in 2005, I reviewed my position. Six months later I reviewed my position again and will continue to do so until the ECB speak to me… If the offer was true, then he must have made it behind their backs. If anything, the evidence points to Fletcher wanting to be the sole selector. His strong dogmatic views and need to control every aspect of the England team suggest that he wants to be a football-style supremo, a role Ray Illingworth tried in the Nineties with scant success. His attention to detail and analysis means he verges on being a control freak. When he says he is not the only voice in selection he is right. Yet given his seven years in the job and the authority he commands, it would be surprising, especially on tour, if he didn’t get his way. The omission of Monty Panesar, whoever made the decision, was ill-judged and brought a public outcry.
