Unity of purpose needed for ‘Back to Africa’ 2010 – Boxhill
Jamaica Observer – Dec 23, 2006
It certainly was not the first, and I have the strange and pleasant feeling it would not have been the last time when Carl would have given of his experience in the interest of the national football programme. At all times, he has given of his best. I would also like to recognise former national coach Wendell Downswell, who guided the senior team again during a difficult programme, that is, immediately following Jamaica’s elimination from the 2006 World Cup Campaign. In that period, Jamaica won the 2005 Digicel Caribbean Cup and became the only Caribbean national to qualify for the 2007 Pan-Am Games. Again coach Downswell is one who will have a role to play in our football development in the future. In fact, ladies and gentlemen, through the efforts of our local coaching cadre, at all levels, Jamaica have qualified for the final stages of all youth tournaments. and I wish to stress of both genders, for the very first time… In that period, Jamaica won the 2005 Digicel Caribbean Cup and became the only Caribbean national to qualify for the 2007 Pan-Am Games. Again coach Downswell is one who will have a role to play in our football development in the future. In fact, ladies and gentlemen, through the efforts of our local coaching cadre, at all levels, Jamaica have qualified for the final stages of all youth tournaments. and I wish to stress of both genders, for the very first time. Jamaica have qualified for the final stages of World Cup qualification for the Under-20s; the Under-17s; the Under-20s women’s team and the senior women’s teams. For the very first time, the country will be represented at the Pan-Am Games by both the men’s and women’s teams. I would go as far as to say that true to our philosophy the last three years have seen a great consistent encouragement to our young players.

Withincentives, the deal could eventually be worth $87 million to “DiceK. Ain’t it grand? G is for grandma Fien The NZRL can book hotels and plane flights, schedule meetings,do nifty power-point presentations but reading a birth certificateis a little too tough for them? H is for head-butt Of all the ways he saw himself leaving football, redcard-assault and World Cup final goat was probably somewhere nearthe bottom of the list for football great Zinedine Zidane. I’d prefer to remember the left-foot volley that won theChampions League title for Real Madrid over Bayern Leverkusen in2002. But because a lanky Italian named Marco Materazzi decided aWorld Cup final was the right time for a “yo Mama” joke, that’s nowimpossible. I is for inspirational In February, Jim Johnson, coach of the Greece Athena US highschool basketball team, decided to put team manager Jason McElwaininto the final game of their season. In just four minutes, McElwain scored 20 points, including sixthree-pointers.

World Cup remains distant dream for Brazil, Colombia
Pakistan Dawn – Dec 24, 2006
The tournament is due to be staged in South America under FIFA’s new rotation system which will begin in South Africa in 2010. FIFA, however, has already said it will look elsewhere if the South American Confederation cannot produce a bid which meets its rigid criteria. Until this week, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) believed that it would have a clear shot at the tournament. Three years ago, the federations of the South American countries voted unanimously to back Brazil as their only candidate. But the Colombian FA broke ranks this week under pressure from President Alvaro Uribe, who wanted the country to launch its own bid. The Brazilian media immediately dismissed the Colombian bid. ?They know they won’t win, but at the least they will put the country on display,? sneered the Rio de Janeiro-based daily O Globo in an editorial… Colombia were awarded the 1986 World Cup but pulled out two years before it was due to be staged because of economic problems. The tournament was instead held in Mexico. Brazil were candidates to stage the 2006 World Cup but withdrew three days before the final vote decided in Germany’s favour in July 2000. The campaign never captured the public’s imagination and attracted vociferous opposition from Pele, who described it as a waste of money. Colombia and Brazil would have to invest lavishly in new stadiums. The Metropolitano stadium in Barranquilla is the only Colombian arena which comes near to World Cup level while Curitiba’s Arena da Baixada is the only Brazilian stadium which would have any chance of passing the test today. The world famous Maracana, like many of the gigantic stadiums built around Brazil between 1950 and 1980, is now crumbling and many believe it should be pulled down.

World Cup’s only meaningful issue
RIA Novosti – Dec 25, 2006
Let us look, however, at a broader picture. The well-deserved red card was the last thing Zidane saw in his professional career as a player. The 2006 World Cup was the last for Oliver Kahn and Luis Figo. Francesco Totti is not going to play for his national side any more; David Beckham is unlikely to be fit for the next one either. Many great players of the past decade bid their farewell to the game at the 18th World Cup. Russia was not represented, which was probably a good thing for two reasons. Firstly, our players did not deserve it; secondly, neither did our fans… Poland Group A fixture. More peaceful, if not always sober, fan action was carefully and successfully managed with the help of "Fanfeste" – specially devised reservations within which – for the first time in the World Cup history, God bless Germany for this – fans could do what they wanted. Apart from football, there was much this World Cup will be remembered for: Dutch "orange revolutions" in Hamburg and Frankfurt, kangaroo dances in Munich and Kaiserslautern in support of the Australian Socceroos, English "beer squares" in Nuremberg and Cologne, crowds painted Swiss, Ukrainian, Ivorian, Mexican. By some accounts, fan action even overshadowed players' performance – which is important because clearly not everyone adept at near-football street shows could afford a trip to the World Cup – the Brazilian Samba Team was, in fact, 90% white. The Germans used the World Cup to launch an all-out PR offensive (it could have been far more "all-out" with the help of the country's two million Turks, if only Turkey, the 2002 World Cup third place winner, had passed through the qualification), involving even Angela Merkel, the Bundeskanzlerin, who seemed to turn up at several stadiums simultaneously, and Pope Benedict XVI, who could as well publish his accounts of how he had supported the German side, watching the World Cup on his black-and-white TV.

In his weekly newsletter to the ruling African National Congress, Mbeki knocked back any suggestion the tournament would be held elsewhere and rejected fears that stadiums would not be completed on time. ?The truth is that with regard to 2010, we have beaten all previous records with regard to the preparations for the successful hosting of the Fifa Soccer World Cup, including the benchmarks set by the highly successful 2006 German Fifa World Cup,? said Mbeki. ?I am happy to report that the joint efforts of Fifa, the Local Organising Committee and the South African government, have established solid foundations for what will be an exceptional event. ?

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has previously expressed misgivings about the lack of construction and renovation work on the 10 venues for the tournament. But Mbeki said building work at the stadium in Johannesburg, which will host the final, would start early next year, and earth-moving and piling operations were already underway in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Nelspruit. Mbeki also rubbished the notion ?that some countries were already standing by to take over this responsibility from us, since it was certain we would definitely fail to do the things Fifa required of us?.

A legal basis is also provided where action can be taken, for example, in cases of simulation by players. The regulations provide for a five-match suspension, or a ban of a specified period, for anyone who insults the human dignity of a person or group of persons, by whatever means, including grounds of colour, race, religion or ethnic origin. 31 JulyUEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson says the World Cup provided a vital pointer for the future – football fans should be put first. In his latest editorial column in the official UEFA publication uefadirect, Mr Olsson says every effort should be made to keep alive the passion that characterised the German tournament – with UEFA EURO 2008™ in Austria and Switzerland the next eagerly awaited football festival on the horizon. “Every aspect of the World Cup has been or will be dissected, and this will provide vital information for the next major international competitions,” he explains.

Regardless of who we got it was going to be tough. “Tottenham await either Liverpool or Arsenal in the final four, with the first leg at White Hart Lane. Kewell woeHarry Kewell has admitted he desperately misses football having not played since the World Cup. The injury-prone Liverpool winger, on course to return in February, said: “I’d go out there and play by myself at the moment because I miss football that much. I just want to play. “Goal in sightThe countdown to score the 15,000th Premiership goal should reach an end before the new year. The player who nets the historic landmark will receive a £15,000 cheque from league sponsors Barclays to donate to a charity of his choice.

He passed Babe Ruth on the career home run list, but couldn’t shake suspicions raised by grand jury investigations and a best-selling book that he also was juiced when it mattered most. Not Bode Miller, who partied like an Olympian but had a hard time skiing like one. Nor Italy’s World Cup-winning squad, which shrugged off a sordid match-fixing scandal back home and a startling head butt by French star Zinedine Zidane in the final – only to return and see several of its stars scatter to other leagues in Europe and a few top-tier clubs demoted to lower divisions. Not even Barbaro was immune. The strapping bay colt steamrolled 19 other 3-year-olds at the Kentucky Derby, raising hopes the first Triple Crown since 1978 might be in the offing. Then he put a foot down wrong at the Preakness, fracturing his right hind leg, and the story was no longer about winning, but survival. That much seemed assured by year’s end as Barbaro prepared to leave the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center and return to the farm… A handful of greats from across the sports spectrum now leave behind only memories. Death claimed Byron Nelson, golf’s enduring gentleman, at age 94; Red Auerbach, architect of the Boston Celtics’ dynasty at 89; LPGA pioneer Patty Berg at 88; boxer Floyd Patterson at 71; four-time Iditarod winner Susan Butcher at 51,and Hall of Fame center fielder Kirby Puckett at 45. Former Wolverines football coach Bo Schembechler died at age 77 on the eve of maybe the best Michigan-Ohio State game ever. Both Schembechler and his mentor, Buckeye coach Woody Hayes, had gone to great lengths to make sure there was never a bad one, a tradition even kids born after the coaches had left the sideline could appreciate. Just before kickoff, in a tribute so fitting it made you smile, one of those kids hoisted a sign that read, “Bo and Woody in Heaven: Play Nice.

Germany celebrated the victory in Rome in 1990. 16 years later, the favour was repaid, as the Azzurri did it in Berlin. Which was the better team? 1982 or 2006? Well it both started badly for both teams as Cribari missed a penalty (the first ever in a World Cup final) but Italy went on to control the game. In 2006, Italy started poorly, but they took control and got the equalizer. France ruled the 2nd half and in extra time, however the defense could not be broken. In the end, Italy studied (still do actually) their opponents well and 5 goals went in. Yes Buffon lost his touch taking penalties.

Mourinho’s mind games go too far
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 24, 2006
Anyone who has played football could see that the only thing Hunt was guilty of was being a little overzealous. It was just an unfortunate accident. I understand how, in the heat of the moment, Mourinho went straight from pitchside to the TV cameras and, still embroiled in the game, went too far. After all one of his players had been seriously hurt so leeway must be granted. However, having watched the replays, he must have realised Hunt’s challenge contained no malice… Chelsea get far more of the latter, it’s just that they remember the former. Perhaps Mourinho also underestimates the natural support for the underdog. Mourinho on Claude Makelele not being allowed to retire from international football (Aug 28): He has played the biggest game any footballer can play by playing in the World Cup final for France and he now wants to retire from international football. It is unbelievable. Makelele is not a footballer, he is a slave. Again Mourinho goes too far. The irony is that I really sympathise with the point he is trying to make: players should be allowed to quit international football and there should be no penalty on clubs for that.

ABC Sport – Cricket – Warne the bigger loss to cricket: McGrath
abc.net.au – Dec 24, 2006
McGrath and Warne will both retire from Test cricket at the end of the Ashes. McGrath will play on in the one-day game until the end of the World Cup, while Warne will play out the final two seasons of his contract with English county side Hampshire. McGrath said he was confident there were several fast bowlers who could replace him in the Australian Test team. But he warned that Warne would be far harder to replace. “To me he’s one of the best, if not the best, cricketer there’s been,” he said. “[He’s] definitely the best guy I’ve played alongside of.

But he told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag: “I am not saying that if I get an Arsenal offer I will definitely stay. If there is no Arsenal deal I am open. ”

Lehmann helped take Arsenal to the Champions League final last season then played a part in Germany’s advance to the World Cup semi-finals. And he was to the fore on Saturday as Arsenal routed Blackburn 6-2. He said clubs in Spain and Germany would interest him but added: “I might not make a decision until May. I’m pretty relaxed about my whole situation.
