Goal.com – Prem Preview: Manchester United-Reading
Goal.com – Dec 29, 2006
Not only because Reading are managed by one of United’s illustrious old boys, Steve Coppell, but also because his team gave United a belated Christmas present by holding Chelsea to a draw on Boxing Day. There were scenes of jubilation before the match at Old Trafford as the news rippled round the stadium about Reading’s performance and battling draw. The news clearly got through to the players and may have contributed to a stuttering first half later redeemed by Ronaldo’s virtuoso appearance. It’s a comforting fact that, though the displays haven’t recently touched the heights reached in October, the team continues to rack up pleasing performances, plenty of goals and consistent points. Clearly it is the improvement in the goals scored column which is the biggest change over recent seasons, but add to that the admirable meanness in the Vidic-led defence, and the glowing performances of the likes of Ronaldo and Scholes and there are plenty of reasons for the satisfied smiles at Old Trafford.

He had won 2 titles is not because he’s good in coaching. If there’s no Russian backup, can he win the english premier league title for even once? I don’t think so!
He just being to proud. But infact, he’s nothing without the Russian money.

David Healy: Dream can be reality
Belfast Telegraph – Dec 29, 2006
The hope for Northern Ireland fans in 2007 will be that we qualify for the finals of a major championship for the first time since 1986. Yes, it’s going to be really difficult – some would even say impossible – but I’m feeling positive about our chances. And I really do believe that we can qualify for Euro 2008. After our first qualifier – that awful 3-0 defeat at home to Iceland – the finals seemed a million miles away. But, following brilliant performances against Spain, Denmark and Latvia, we are actually in a good position in the group. Seven points from 12 is not bad at all. From our next three games, we should be planning to take at least another seven points… After our first qualifier – that awful 3-0 defeat at home to Iceland – the finals seemed a million miles away. But, following brilliant performances against Spain, Denmark and Latvia, we are actually in a good position in the group. Seven points from 12 is not bad at all. From our next three games, we should be planning to take at least another seven points. We have Liechtenstein away from home, then Sweden at Windsor Park and that is followed by Liechtenstein in Belfast. I know there will be people who don’t believe this, but there are no easy games in international football these days, although, even allowing for that, we should be looking to beat Liechtenstein at their place and ours. And, if we can take anything against Sweden, who have been excellent in our group so far, that will stand us in good stead.

We’ll stay next to the window and see what happens in the market, ready to be active in June. ”Latest transfer rumours were that Tomas Ujfalusi was going to leave Fiorentina in January for either Sevilla or Milan, however Corvino quickly denied this speculation. “The great players, those who improve your quality, will not move from their teams in mid-season. In January there will be no incoming or outgoing movements. Ujfalusi will remain with us, like those players who had less space and that other clubs asked us for,” concluded Corvino.

Goal.com – Capello Forced To Be Less Rigourous In Spain – Cannavaro
Goal.com – Dec 29, 2006
“In Spanish footbal, it is not customary – like in Italy – to work a lot, and train rigourously,” said Cannavaro in an interview to a Gazzetta dello Sport magazine. “At Juventus, we had a group of players that went for it every day. The likes of Blasi, Zambrotta, Nedved and myself used to train with a lot of intensity. “Here in Madrid, it is normal to relax. ”
“The Madrid air has also Capello,” assured the 33-year-old defender.

Goal.com – Rossi: We Will Do Well Even If Oddo Leaves
Goal.com – Dec 29, 2006
If we want to make a leap forward we all have to improve, including myself and players who have played less like Behrami. From the others I expect that they improve, because they are playing at very high levels. For me it’s not a problem to say we will win the Scudetto or the Champions League. For me it’s important to reach your objectives, not declare them. We have to play game after game.

Goal.com – Sevilla’s Kepa Hints At England, Germany Move
Goal.com – Dec 29, 2006
Asked about Sevilla’s signing of Russian forward Aleksander Kerzhakov, he responded matter-of-factly: “The club have decided on that, and it is necessary to respect that. I am here to work hard and contribute. “But if the opportunity is not there, it is necessary to look for life elsewhere.

Argentinian sports newspaper Ole claims the two-time World Cup winners will play a friendly against Steve McClaren’s side in late May or early June next year. Brazil have also reportedly been in negotiations with the Football Association (FA) for a friendly at the 90,000 capacity stadium. But the FA have insisted they have not decided which games will be played at the £750 million stadium. "The FA has not confirmed any fixtures from 2007 beyond those we have already announced," an FA spokesman said. "We are not in a position to contractually announce any more at this time. " England are expected to play Germany on August 22nd next year in the second game at Wembley in preparation for their crunch Euro 2008 qualifiers. The first game at the national stadium will be the FA Cup final on May 19th 2007 followed by the international friendly on June 2nd, according to a report in the Times newspaper last week… "The FA has not confirmed any fixtures from 2007 beyond those we have already announced," an FA spokesman said. The Wembley project, which began in 2002, has been delayed by a row between the FA and the construction company Multiplex. It was supposed to stage last season’s FA Cup final between Liverpool and West Ham but the game was played at Cardiff’s Millennium stadium for the sixth straight year. The last game at the old Wembley was England’s 1-0 loss to Germany in October 2000, which was Kevin Keegan’s last match in charge as national coach.

“That is not true,” he told Arsenal TV Online. “I have never mentioned I will retire after the Euros in 2008. ” “What I said was I would likely retire from the national team – but I could also have said I would be likely to go on, which then says nothing. “If I can keep fit, like I am now, then I can go on and on and on – two years at least. “Lehmann wants Arsenal to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the season, by two years but Arsene Wenger’s hands are tied by club policy to offer veterans one-year at a time.

Goal.com – Granqvist Joins Wigan On Loan
Goal.com – Dec 29, 2006
“I liked working with the manager in training, and I can see there is already a great squad here. ”
He becomes the second Swedish player at the JJB Stadium, following striker Andreas Johansson to Lancashire. Granqvist has earned one Sweden cap so far, but as part of the deal with Wigan he will not play in his country’s series of friendlies against South American opposition in January. Granqvist added: “I hope I can repay the faith Wigan have shown in me by performing well for the club. ”
