Team Saudi Arabia Bring 2006 to a Happy End
Arab News – Dec 29, 2006
The joy was short-lived though when the Kingdom failed to advance past the group stage in the World Cup finals. Happily, the year has been guaranteed to end on a bright note when Team Saudi Arabia scored unprecedented success in the Asian Games recently with eight gold and six bronze medals. Also, in September the Saudi National Football Team with Special Needs won the 4th Football World Cup for People with Disabilities in Leverkusen, Germany. In the Cup qualifiers, Saudi Arabia tied with Uzbekistan 1-1 in Uzbekistan; they then went on to win against South Korea 2-0 in Dammam and tied 0-0 against Kuwait in Kuwait. In the second leg match Saudi Arabia defeated Kuwait 3-0 in Riyadh, won vs. Uzbekistan 3-0 in Riyadh again and qualified early for the World Cup. The Saudi national team then won their last match against South Korea 1-0 in South Korea.

Heady heights for Asafa Powell in 2006
Jamaica Observer – Dec 30, 2006
One of football’s all-time greats had to be expelled from what was his farewell to competitive football, having succumbed to verbal provocation. More evidence, if any was needed, of the frailty of human emotion. Inevitably, the football World Cup in mid-year engendered among Jamaicans a yearning for a return to the glory days of the late 1990s when the Reggae Boyz qualified for the finals tournament in France. No doubt that yearning, at all levels, helped to strengthen the hand of the Crenston Boxhill-led Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) in acquiring the services of the highly successful international coach Mr Bora Milutinovic. His task will be to guide the Reggae Boyz to the World Cup Finals in South Africa in 2010. For the loyal followers of West Indies cricket, there was a fair deal to cheer about when the regional team – not highly thought of though they were the defending champions – shocked India, South Africa and Australia to reach the final of the ICC Champions Trophy Tournament in India. They were brought back to earth when the Australians rebounded to win comprehensively in the final… They were brought back to earth when the Australians rebounded to win comprehensively in the final. West Indian optimism was further dented by 0-2 and 1-3 losses to Pakistan in follow-up Test match and one-day series in that country. The reality, however, is that West Indian cricket fans will leave 2006 behind, armed with the knowledge that their team is capable of putting up a really strong challenge, even if they do not win the ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean in March and April. What a prospect!

Once again corruption reared its ugly head with Vietnam at the forefront. Eight players, including seven from its under-23 national side, are due to be tried for a huge match-fixing scandal. Vietnamese football was under intense scrutiny all year, with police also investigating fraud allegations implicating dozens of players, referees and coaches for alleged involvement in separate match fixing cases. On the upside, Asian players continued to make their mark in the world?s best leagues, led by Park Ji Sung at Manchester United and Shunsuke Nakamura at Celtic, while projects to popularise the game at the grassroots gathered steam.

Haj gets crowd control football-style-News-World-Middle East-TimesOnli…
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Dec 29, 2006
Costly new safety measures have been implemented to prevent stampedes such as the one that afflicted the last haj, in which at least 345 pilgrims, including three Britons, died during the ritual stoning of a pillar representing the devil. A Saudi team went to Munich to learn from the Germans’ experience of managing hordes of football fans during the World Cup, and the Kingdom has spent $1 billion (£500 billion) improving safety at the stoning site in Mina. This year’s haj takes place against the background of growing concern across the Islamic world over the chaos in Iraq, violence in the Palestinian territories and war in Somalia. html”–>Tensions have also increased between the two main sects of Islam, Sunnis and Shias, who gather together in the five days of haj rituals centred on the holy city of Mecca. The Saudi authorities said they would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the pilgrimage.

Questions for 2007 | OTHER SPORTS | SPORT | tvnz.co.nz
TVNZ – Dec 31, 2006
Oh, and there’s some yachting thing happening in Valencia. As the 2007 sports year unfolds, issues will be resolved andcertain questions will be answered. But will we get the answers we want? Here’s a list of things to ponder in 2007: Other than John Mitchell, will anyone care about the Super14? Will the All Blacks win the World Cup? If they do, what will be left for New Zealand sports fans toobsess about? If they do, will Graham Henry pay taxes ever again? Win or lose, has Robbie Deans already agreed a deal to be thenext All Black coach? Of all the appointments made in 2006, was the NZRU’s hiring ofMartin Snedden to head the 2011 World Cup effort the best? Is Ian Chappell the best cricket analyst around and why isn’t hecoaching a team? Can Daniel Vettori hold a spot in a top six? Will Brendon McCullum be the new Adam Gilchrist or the newRomesh Kaluwitharana? Would you trust Peter Fulton, Ross Taylor, the Marshalls, JamieHow, Lou Vincent or Mathew Sinclair in a World Cup final? Do Scott Styris and Jacob Oram hold the keys to New Zealand’sWorld Cup chances? Will you be comfortable having Muttiah Muralitharan as theworld’s leading test wicket taker? Will the Silver Ferns win the netball world championships? If they do, and Irene Van Dyk retires, is Maria Tutaia herheiress apparent? If they do, and Ruth Aitken retires, who is next? If Australia win, has Norma Plummer been right all thistime? Was letting Brent Webb go a colossal mistake? Is there life after Stacey, Ruben and Nigel? When will people stop listening to Willie Mason? When will David Gallop be forced to issue a statement aboutanother off-field NRL incident? How many last chances does Sione Faumuina get? Will someone with deep pockets salvage professional football inNew Zealand? Will New Zealanders realise we have a bright future in women’sfootball? Can a salary cap save English Premier League football? Will the Breakers make the playoffs? If they don’t, given the roster he has, will Andre Lemanis haveto go? With their window slowly closing, is Nenad Vucinic the right manfor the Tall Blacks job? If Steve Nash leads the Phoenix Suns to an NBA title, will ashort Canadian be the best basketballer alive? Can Roger Federer win on the red stuff? Can Marina Erakovic make tennis relevant in New Zealandagain? Will Tiger Woods win all four majors? Can someone other than Michael Campbell fly the flag for NewZealand golf on the international stage? Can Grant Dalton and Dean Barker win back the America’s Cup? If you don’t live or own a business in the viaduct, will youcare either way? Will New Zealand make any kind of ripple at the swimming worldchampionships in Melbourne? Can Mahe Drysdale claim a three-peat? Now Greg Murphy is with Tasman, is he back in the V8 Supercartitle hunt? Now Team Kiwi is in the Ford camp, are they a legitimatethreat? Will January’s A1 event in Taupo be as big as everyone says itwill? Will Michael Schumacher regret retiring? Has Scott Dixon’s Formula One window closed? Will you applaud Barry Bonds when he breaks Hank Aaron’s MajorLeague Baseball home run record?.

What will 2007 bring for local football?
Independent Online – Dec 30, 2006
The microscope will be on him from the start, particularly given his astronomical salary of around R1,8-million per month. Only by winning the World Cup in 2010 and in the meantime creating world peace, could Parreira, frankly, justify such a ridiculous pay packet. As a start, he must qualify Bafana for the 2008 African Nations Cup finals in Ghana, with his first scheduled game in charge a qualifier in Chad in March. Parreira, in conjunction with the South African football Association, will also be hoping to arrange a couple of high profile friendlies, with 2010 in mind… As well as stadia, expect plenty of new hotels to pop up all over the country, while locally, the building of the Gautrain continues, with angry motorists hopefully kept to a minimum. Premier Soccer League

2007’s miracle would undoubtedly be Silver Stars continuing to hold off their challengers and winning the PSL. Stars had an extraordinary end to 2006, winning the Telkom Knockout as well as topping the PSL going into the Christmas break. It was a staggering feat for a side with little money and few “star” names. With the rich kids from Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs breathing down their necks, Stars will have their work cut out to hold on to their PSL lead. Chiefs, in particular, went into the Christmas break in red hot form. Chiefs’ great rivals, Orlando Pirates, are unlikely to challenge, however.

Press Pack Reports: Your Reports
BBC News – Dec 31, 2006
Press Packer Anna has written a report about some of the big news stories that caught her attention as well as including some important dates of her own. “This year has been packed full of events!

In January a whale was found in the river Thames in central London – I live by the Thames so it must have swum past my house! Even after people tried to help it survive, it died later on. Bird flu and football… In May I had to sit my SATs. We had a week of mocks and then the real things. They weren’t too bad but I’m glad I don’t have to sit any more for a few years!

During the summer one of the biggest sporting events of the year took place – The Football World Cup. Lots of us had high hopes for England’s football team, hopefully they’ll do better next time!
Scary school. Also in September, the wildlife expert famous for wrestling with crocodiles, Steve Irwin, died after being stung through the heart by a stingray. Lots of people were very upset.

Lost in the Fog, last year’s champion sprinter, succumbed to cancer three months after winning a stakes race at Churchill Downs. Saint Liam was named 2005 Horse of the Year in January, but months later died in a freak accident during his first season at stud. Electrocutionist won the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup, but died during the summer in Great Britain. Pine Island rose to become the pro-tem leader of the 3-year-old filly division, then with one bad step in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff suffered catastrophic injuries that necessitated her being euthanized minutes later. The stallions Favorite Trick and Saratoga Six died in a barn fire. And when pilots went down the wrong runway in Lexington, Ky. , on the morning of Aug.

Cheer up. We can win in ’07
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 30, 2006
Frustrated by a national football team that failed to live up to the hype at this summer’s World Cup and appalled by an England rugby union team that has slumped to a record eight defeats in nine games, he set his alarm clock for 5am last Thursday to see if Andrew Flintoff and his team-mates could restore some pride in the fourth cricket Test in Melbourne. It is hardly the ideal way to begin a new sporting year and, as Mr Walters well knows, the news is unlikely to get any better. Next on the cricket calendar is the World Cup in the Caribbean in March, but England’s record in the one-day version of the game is so abject that, of the major cricketing nations, only Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Kenya are ranked below them.

Houston: NHL’s woes in US an unexpected twist in 2006
Globe and Mail – Dec 29, 2006
Righting a wrong: Let’s hope the NHL Broadcasters’ Association votes the Foster Hewitt Award posthumously to Bill Hewitt, who should have won the honour years ago. That Bill Hewitt, a national voice for more than 30 years, has been ignored, while regional broadcasters have been winning, is an outrage. More memorable quotes

You are a virtuoso, a genius of world football. You are also a man of heart, commitment, conviction. That’s why France loves and admires you. ” — French President Jacques Chirac heaped praise on Zin?dine Zidane, the day after he was kicked out of the World Cup final for head-butting Italy’s Marco Materazzi. “Pardon me, but isn’t that a little like giving a Tony [Award] to John Wilkes Booth?” — Dan Daly of The Washington Times, on Zidane being awarded the Golden Ball as top player in the World Cup.

Here comes South Africa 2010…ready or not
Sunday Times – The Sunday Times – Dec 31, 2006
As for Fifa, the owner of the World Cup, the tournament will arrive quite soon enough: lately, its president, Sepp Blatter, has looked at his watch and given it a tap as he surveys the preparations. Of the 10 stadiums earmarked for the tournament across South Africa, four are not much further than site-clearing, and one is not there yet. The 2006 World Cup had barely wound down in Berlin when a few of the game’s chancers thought they glimpsed an opening. John O’Neill, the then chief executive of Football Federation Australia, seemed to be offering an alternative when he spoke of “all sorts of question marks” over South Africa’s readiness. Question marks go with the territory. No Olympic Games or World Cup takes place without an alarm being raised over building schedules. Assigning Fifa’s modern, 32-team, multi- billion-dollar World Cup to the developing world for the first time seems to provoke the big question more often: can South Africa deliver? Yes, insists Fifa… Of the 10 stadiums earmarked for the tournament across South Africa, four are not much further than site-clearing, and one is not there yet. Barbaro breaks downThe image is still haunting. Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro shifting into high gear, making a push to win the Preakness then suddenly pulling up. His right hind leg dangles in a mangled mess as jockey Edgar Prado jumps off and holds up the magnificent horse, brushing his face in an attempt to comfort it… Head-buttYou're allowed to use your head in soccer. Unless you're ramming it into the chest of an opponent. In perhaps the most surreal and most replayed sports scene of the year, France's Zinedine Zidane was thrown out of the World Cup championship game when he head-butted Italy's Marco Materazzi in the chest. Materazzi later admitted to insulting Zidane's sister. Zidane nevertheless won the MVP of the tournament, but Materazzi and his Italian teammates won the World Cup. An image to rememberWe said goodbye to a legend.

Although France never managed to hold the winners? trophy, in the Final against Italy, Zizou opened the scoring with an audacious spot-kick.

More tears than cheers in 2006
Central Chronicle – Dec 30, 2006
Indian football slips further in 2006
It seemed like a case of one step forward and two steps back for Indian football in 2006, which could not capitalise on the positive momentum generated last year. India, which leapt to 117th spot at the turn of the year 12 months ago after the triumph at the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup in Pakistan, plunged to 157th by the end of 2006 after forgettable outings in the Asian Cup qualifiers and the Doha Asian Games. However, the All India Football Federation seems to be living in some other world, as it is still talking in terms of World Cup qualification in 2010 and 2014. A change of coach and high-profile agreements with two footballing powerhouses did little to redress the despair of Indian football fans, who have almost resigned to the dismal fate of the national team. The year started with India finding itself grouped with defending champions Japan and continental powerhouses Saudi Arabia, as well as Yemen, in the Asian Cup qualifiers. Not even the die-hard Indian fans would have expected the team to come through such a tough pool, but the display of Syed Nayeemuddin’s side in the first two matches of the campaign left the public as well as the AIFF searching for answers. The team started with a 0-6 defeat at the hands of Japan in Yokohama.

They’re very convincing and can definitely work. Still,
the posts are very short for newbies. May you please prolong them a bit from next time?

I have no understanding of coding but I was hoping to start my own blog soon. Anyhow, should you have any suggestions or tips for new
blog owners please share. I understand this is off subject but I just had to
    ask. Thanks a lot!

  29. I was wondering if you ever considered changing the
page layout of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.

Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two images.
Maybe you could space it out better?
