Goal.com – Prem Reaction: Lampard Gutted At Late Miss
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
“We were on top of them, we played very well except for maybe around the box, and that was me having shots and it wasn’t happening. “[Aston Villa] are on a bad run and they played to contain us, which is fair enough. ”
Lampard told Sky Sports: “Three draws is not great, the two home games especially we should have won. “Everyone has dips but it is important you keep working hard to get out of them. “[The gap] is six points – that’s two games and it’s a long way to go. ”
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claims to be very happy that Manchester United are still catchable despite his side’s poor recent form. “Six points at the end of this disgraceful period is not bad and the way they fought, we are leaving with a lot of hopes for the second part of the season,” he said.

Goal.com – Collina’s Bald Ambition
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
The reasons are summarized in a letter written by Marcello Nicchi, Collina’s main opponents for the new designator post, to the Football Association. Basically Nicchi, and the vast majority of the men in black, feel that a part time solution is very humiliating, especially because Collina will be a media commentator and consequently he will be in the uncomfortable position to defend referees against attacks of fellow commentators. We can say that uncertainty in Italian football politics will not disappear very soon, but we have to admit that bringing on some big names like Collina could improve a deteriorated situation. Let’s wait and see. In the meantime the new consultant-coach has stated that he’s a bit saddened for the reactions to his appointment. Not a promising start for what appears to be a rather difficult relationship.

Goal.com – Mascherano Desperate For Nightmare To End
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
I can’t spend any more time without playing,” he was quoted as saying in Equipo. “It’s to be expected that if I’m not playing for West Ham I will have to continue my career with another club. I came to England to succeed but so far I’ve not had the opportunities to do so. ”
Juventus have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Mascherano, who has also been linked with Liverpool and Real Zaragoza. Tevez has been given more of a chance to showcase his talents, but despite some encouraging displays, has yet to find the net for the Hammers.

Goal.com – No Place For Cassano… Even In Training
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
The last part of this drama soap happened today, when Capello made him train not together with the rest of the team, but alone with Raul Bravo, another player who is seemingly no longer a part of the Merengue coach’s plans. The ex-Roma striker, at the end of the training, even tried to infiltrate into the match that was played after the session, but when Capello noticed this he kindly invited the player to abandon the match. So it seems that for Cassano at Real there isn’t place even in training matches, let alone regular matches.

Goal.com – Cobolli Gigli: We Will Do All We Can To Keep Buffon
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
The keeper asks for guarantees to stay next year as well, and president Cobolli Gigli responds by promising the club will give its all to build a competitive side. “I appreciate the spirit with which our great players, and I’m not just talking about Buffon, have managed to apply themselves to this project of bringing Juve back to the top. The fact that they remained gives the staff extra motivation: we want to give the maximum from a professional viewpoint to repay their trust in the club and the squad”, said Cobolli Gigli who this morning was at the Juventus Center of Vinovo to salute the squad after the Christmas holidays. “This new year starts and it will have to give us a lot of luck, considering how much we lacked it in 2006. But good luck needs to be earned with merit and we will have to deserve it day after day, game after game, to come back in Serie A. The signs are good, but we shouldn’t delude ourselves because the road is still very long.

Goal.com – Beckham To Decide Future By March
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
“They’re the only club we’re genuinely talking to at the moment and another meeting is scheduled for the second week of January,” said a spokeperson for the player to BBC Sport. Reports have indicated Becks has balked at previous offers of a new contract over his image rights and other lucrative commercial interests as the relate to player and to club. “Decisions about his image rights and salary are obviously important, but they’re not deal breakers,” added Beckham’s spokesperson. “He’ll know by March what he’s going to do.

Goal.com – Maccarone Still Looking For Italian Return
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
“I want to change and maybe come back to Italy,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “I’m not perfect and, for sure, I haven’t had my best performance – but I’ve never complained and I’ve always trained seriously. “When I’ve played I always gave my best. ”
Torino, Siena and Napoli are in the hunt for the striker. “There are negotiations but up until now, nothing concrete,” he added. “I don’t ask the guarantee to be a regular but I want to play for a place at the same level as the others.

Goal.com – Onyewu Set For Fulham
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
If he moves to the Cottage he will link up with fellow countrymen Carlos Bocanegra and Brian McBride. Meanwhile, Clint Dempsey is awaiting a work-permit before he completes his move from New England Revolution. Real Madrid reportedly had a late summer bid rejected for Onyewu as Standard would not have had time to replace him. Igor Tudor is being linked with a move to the Belgian giants as Onyewu heads for the exit door.

Goal.com – Rochemback: “I’m Trying To Move To Sporting”
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
I’ve already spoken with my Coach and told him that I’d like to leave to get more playing time and Sporting is my preferred destination, but the club told me that they’re only interested in a full sale not a loan”, ‘Rocky’ explained. His transfer value is around the seven million Euro mark but Sporting aren’t in the best of financial shape to make high investments and would prefer a loan deal. “The payment could even be made in instalments”, he added, also showing flexibility on salary concerns. “I’m only really happy when I’m playing a lot and dong o regularly and it would be great to go back to the role I had at Sporting so I’m willing to reduce my salary demands”, Rochemback stressed. “Paulo Bento has already shown that he’s a great Coach and we played together on the same team when I was last at Sporting so he knows my qualities well.

Goal.com – Everton In For Ferguson?
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
The Liverpool Echo reports that Toffees boss David Moyes could offer the player aloan deal until the end of the season. Midfield strengthening is not top priority for Moyes but Ferguson would nonetheless boost a squad with realistic hopes of qualifying for the Uefa Cup. Moyes tried to sign Ferguson when he left Rangers for a mediocre spell at Blackburn in 2003. Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham are also said to be keen on the Rangers star. Le Guen has claimed that Ferguson was an undermining influence in the dressing room. “He needs a new way of behaving,” said the Frenchman… “He needs a new way of behaving,” said the Frenchman. “He has had too much influence in the dressing room. The fans might not understand, but I know this. When people undermine you, you have to act. ”
Le Guen added that he was unsure whether Ferguson would ever play for the club again: “It remains to be seen. My own position, which is precarious, may have an influence on that.

Goal.com – Ayala Closer To Valencia Exit
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
The idea was to compensate clubs who make a better contract offer to an ‘expiring’ player and are still turned down. In Ayala’s case Valencia would have received a six million Euro indemnity if they’d have offered Ayala a new two-year deal with a better salary or three million if they only offered a year and the player turned them down. The decision not to make an offer by the start of January was made by sporting director and ex-wing back Amedeo Carboni. This could land the exec in hot water unless the decision to pass on the millions was an executive decision by the Valencia board. If Ayala is to sign for any other team now, Mestalla won’t receive so much as one red cent for the deal. This could be considered a way of ending a saga that has dragged on for years as Ayala has flirted with an exit from the Túria club several times including this summer. What isn’t clear is if the decision was plain incompetence instead.

Goal.com – Crouch Determined To Stay A Red
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
I see my future here and as long as the manager doesn’t want me to go, I won’t be going. ”
He added: “I have had challenges throughout my career and this is another one. There are a lot of players who get rotated and I am not the only one. “When you get a chance, you’ve got to take it. Hopefully I’ve given the manager something to think about. We all need to impress, not just those who are in and out. “It can get frustrating when you want to play every game and do your best for the club, but all you can do is keep working hard.

Goal.com – Marcus: Clubs Going After The (Too) Young Ones?
Goal.com – Jan 3, 2007
Such opponents of early talent ‘poaching’ argue that the end result will be blander players that lack the regional and national flavours that complement local produce. Those in favour rubbish such claims pointing out that many young talents leave football for lack of opportunities to let their game develop in exactly this sort of institution. Not only that, they turn the argument around and say that places like ‘La Masía’ enrich other countries’ football by default. Here there is also truth as players from impoverished countries are far more likely to have consistent support in their development in a big institution and the biggest footballing institutions tend to be in Europe. Having access to the latest technology and training methods could even be seen as a way of helping source countries develop their national teams with the inclusion of foreign methods and approaches.
