Sfa Wont Roll Over If Gers Make A Move For Smith (from Evening Times)
Glasgow Evening Times – Jan 5, 2007
cully@eveningtimes. Smith still has 18 months of his contract to run, and the SFA want to know if an illegal approach has been made by the Ibrox club. An SFA source said: “It would be the normal way of things for any club to come to us first if they wanted to speak to the team manager. So that is certainly something we will look at over the next few days. ”
The SFA want Smith to continue his excellent rebuilding job since taking over from Berti Vogts two years ago… This figure would have been much higher had the SFA heeded advice to tie up Smith on a new, long-term contract. Chief executive David Taylor had promised to sit down with the national coach and thrash out a new deal. In October, when Scotland were in Kiev to play Ukraine in the Euro 2008 qualifiers, he said: “I think you may be sure we’ll be offering Walter a new contract a little further on. “At the moment, still early in the campaign, it’s not the right time. ”
That opportunity has passed, and Taylor, who is on holiday, will now have to settle for securing the best possible exit deal and finding a successor to Smith. When Smith and McCoist leave, only Scotland assistant boss Tommy Burns and Under-21 coach Archie Knox will remain of the management structure. But, with the next internationals due on March 24 and 28, when Scotland kick off vital Euro 2008 clashes with Georgia and Italy, the SFA know they must get a new management team in immediately.

Goal.com – Primera Liga Preview: Real Zaragoza – Sevilla
Goal.com – Jan 5, 2007
“We will win the league,” the Russian striker, who was signed from Zenit St Petersburg this week, said. “It will be hard, but it is vital that we stay strong. “Fitness levels should not be affected by the enforced festive holiday, but the question will be the mentality and whether Sevilla’s resolve will be the same as it was before the break. While the championship is the dream, qualification for the Champions League would also be seen as a major step forward. Elite DreamTwo years ago, Sevilla missed out on making it into the top four on the final day and had to watch as their city rivals Real Betis enjoyed a brief stint playing with Europe’s elite. Last term, Ramos led his side to glory in the UEFA Cup, their first continental title, and then the European Super Cup in the summer, but it is the Champions League that remains the holy grail. Victory in this match would put them 13 points ahead of their hosts, who are currently in fifth place, and give them a huge boost in their quest to finish among Spain’s top clubs.

Goal.com – FA Cup Preview: Birmingham City-Newcastle United
Goal.com – Jan 5, 2007
As if starting the season without their star striker Michael Owen was not bad enough, ever since the season started the Magpies have had to deal with a raft of injuries to key players. But in between this, Newcastle have won their first silverware in 37 years. The Intertoto Cup may not have the stature of the Champions League or even the much maligned UEFA Cup, but, as Glenn Roeder put it ‘it is a cup nonetheless’. Newcastle won the Cup by going further in the UEFA Cup than the other 10 qualifiers, thus winning their first silverware since they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969. So if the Magpies manage to win the FA Cup this season, it would be their second silverware of the season and a double whammy for the fans. Newcastle have not won the oldest football competition in the world for more than half a century now – 52 years to be exact – after their triumph over Manchester City in 1955. However, the north-east giants did manage to make the semifinals in the 2004-05 campaign, during the now infamous Graeme Souness era.

Fan worship is a strange thing. United fans love Rooney, adore Scholes, admire Ronaldo, but for the unassuming Solskjaer there is a very special bond of affection. It’s not just for his dozens of goals over the past decade, nor even for his place in history as scorer of THAT last-minute winner that secured the Champions League and the Treble in 1999. It’s a combination of factors but primary among them are his devotion and loyalty to the United fans, and, particularly, his astonishing return to prominence this season after years of injury hell that threatened to end his career. Six Premiership goals have proved that he is back, and a winning goal on Sunday would be the perfect late Christmas present for his legions of fans. Aston Villa – Gareth Barry. Surely one of the most effective and dynamic left-footed English players of the past twenty years Barry has been desperately unfortunate not to secure a suitcase-full of caps.

Chester City make FA Cup history in this tie as the first League club to be re-instated after being been knocked out of the FA Cup. Chester were beaten 3-1 by Bury in a Second Round replay, but the Shakers’ manager, Chris Casper, fielded an ineligible player in Hartlepool’s on-loan midfielder Stephen Turnbull. Pool had not given Bury written permission to play him, and consequently Bury were expelled from the competition. They lost a subsequent appeal so Chester were given a reprieve as Bury’s last victims. Can they take that second chance and beat Ipswich? Their manager, Mark Wright, was a Cup-winning captain of Liverpool in 1992 (and also a runner-up with the Reds in 1996). He has guided Chester to four wins in their last seven games in all competitions, though they’ve lost their last three at home. Ipswich go into the tie 49 places higher than Chester on the League ladder, but have not progressed past the last 32 since 1996.

Goal.com – FA Cup Preview: Chelsea-Macclesfield Town
Goal.com – Jan 5, 2007
Last season Chelsea went out at the semi final stage, losing to Liverpool 2-1. Macclesfield have reached the 3rd round for the 6th time. They have not been at this stage since 2004 when they lost away at Swansea. Last season they disappointingly lost in a 1st round replay away at Yeovil. So far this cup run they have beaten Walsall and Hartlepool which earned them the dream tie at the Champions. Lee Mason from Lancashire takes charge of this match. FORM GUIDE

Chelsea will no doubt rotate some of their players for this cup tie giving some of the fringe players a chance to stake their place in the side.

Goal.com – FA Cup Preview: Doncaster Rovers-Bolton Wanderers
Goal.com – Jan 5, 2007
I can’t see Big Sammy boy leaving a weakened side to play this one out. They will not want to ruin the excellent momentum and high spirits built up over the season with a half arsed display and quick exit from the Cup. Expect a Bolton squad who are all out to show why you should always.

Goal.com – Pardew Cleared Of Misconduct
Goal.com – Jan 5, 2007
A Football Association disciplinary commission found the charge against Pardew not proven. Wenger was also charged by the FA last month and fined £10,000 for his part in the incident. Marlon Harewood scored an 89th-minute winner that Pardew reacted to with an excessive show of jubilation that clearly irked Wenger, whose angry response sparked a touchline confrontation between the pair. There was no ill-feeling between Pardew and Wenger during Tuesday night’s game at the Emirates Stadium when Arsenal entertained Charlton. And the pair shook hands at the end of that match, which the Gunners won 4-0.

O?Cearuill, 19, was drafted into the Irish set-up in time to make his ?B? debut against Scotland in November. He has yet to make his first-team debut for Arsene Wenger?s side, but is certain to receive an initial taste of senior club action during a four-week spell at the Withdean Stadium ? starting with Saturday?s FA Cup clash with Premiership strugglers West Ham United at Upton Park. Seagulls manager Dean Wilkins said: ?We’ve seen him over the course of this season and not having secured Andrew Whing we needed to get someone in. “The occasion is big but the quality of the West Ham players shouldn’t be too big a surprise to him. ?

Goal.com – Bayern Leave Hargreaves Door Ajar
Goal.com – Jan 5, 2007
United made their interest known in the summer, but Bayern ensured them Hargreaves would not be leaving. However, Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail: “In principle, we were right to stick to our guns over Owen. “If a player has signed a new contract with us, then tries to move for more money, we are within our rights to say no. “But this is different and if we receive an offer on the scale that has been mentioned it is going to have to be given serious consideration.

Back of the internetWith Celtic having fought back from 2-0 down to halve the deficit, Nakamura gave the Scottish champions a draw with a clever chip from outside the area that won praise from opposition goalkeeper Derek Stillie, who said: “At first I thought I was getting to his chip and then I thought, ‘I’m not getting it’. It was a great bit of skill. ” However it was not a moment of improvisation, but frankly, a rip-off. Nakamura said: “The reason I tried to do what I did at the goal was because I saw someone else do exactly the same on the internet. I saw footage on YouTube of a player, I can’t remember who it was, chip the goalkeeper from that position. I thought I would try to do the same if I got the chance because it was a goal I really liked. So I was happy I was able to do the same and score.

Goal.com – Onyewu Linked With AC Milan
Goal.com – Jan 5, 2007
The Cottagers certainly crave the Standard Liege defender, but Standard Liege has been balking at agreeing terms with the Premiership side — the asking price for the American a little higher than what Fulham boss Chris Coleman originally thought. Onyewu, who saw Standard block a move to Real Madrid in August, actually took a medical at Fulham in London, but he returned this week to join up with Standard for training and also to discuss terms with suitors from France, Spain, and Italy. One of those suitors appears to be AC Milan, who would not be put off by the estimated $4 million asking price for “Gooch. “The Rossoneri, however, still are trying to obtain highly-touted Lazio defender Massimo Oddo, who recently admitted his Lazio future was in doubt because of the offer from Milan.

Appetite intactObserving Papin on the training ground outside Stade de la Meinau provides ample evidence that his appetite remains intact. While his players are off running, the 43-year-old, still in excellent physical condition, grasps the opportunity to sneak in ten minutes of free-kick practise.
