Soca Warriors, Powell captured Caribbean headlines in 2006
Jamaica Gleaner – Jan 6, 2007
Bottom row (from left): Densill Theobald, Carlos Edwards, Collin Samuel, Cyd Gray, Christopher Birchall and Stern John. RIGHT: Jamaica’s Asafa Powell. Trinidad and Tobago’s historic outing at the FIFA World Cup in Germany captured the headlines in 2006, a year when Brian Lara regained the West Indies captaincy, Jamaican sprint ace Asafa Powell dominated the 100 metres and the region intensified preparations to host the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007. Stephen Ames’ nabbing of the PGA Tour’s unofficial major, the Players Championship, also sent shockwaves throughout the golfing fraternity as the Trinidadian asserted himself as one of the best in the world with a pristine performance. It was football, however, that dominated the attention of the Caribbean as Trinidad and Tobago, affectionately dubbed the ‘Soca Warriors’, made their first-ever appear-ance at a World Cup finals in June. Led by former Manchester United and Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke, T&T became only the second English-speaking Caribbean team to debut at the spectacle. While the campaign finished in disappointment with the Caribbean side failing to win a single game, they created a huge impression at the tournament with their passionate, gutsy displays.

Essien wins BBC African award
BBC News – Jan 5, 2007
In a live public vote on Friday, Essien received nearly twice as many votes as Ahly and Egypt playmaker Mohamed Aboutrika and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba. For the first time in the history of the prize, the winner was decided live during the BBC World Service’s flagship African sports programme Fast Track. The BBC award takes into account the football calendar from January to December 2006 and includes domestic leagues, both the Uefa and Caf Champions League tournaments. The African Nations Cup, the World Cup and the World Club Cup are also included within this period. Your views on who deserved to win the BBC African Footballer of the Year award for 2006:

I vote for Mohammed Aboutrika because of his goals for Egypt and helping Ahly retain their title as the African Club Champions. Ibrahim Ceesay in Freetown

Undoubtedly the best African midfielder, it has got to be Michael Essien. B S Magashi, Benguema… Drogba because of his goalscoring skills. Kenema, Sierra Leone

Aboutrika. Why? Because he has been a decisive trump card for Egypt in the African Nations Cup finals over the Ivory Coast.

Or am I just being a greedy soccer fan?Dan Steinberg: I didn’t do anything World Cup or Olympics on my list. Regardless of local involvement, they just don’t feel like local events to me. Plus, I’m bitter that I didn’t get to go to the World Cup. On the other hand, my personal Top 11 Steinberg Sports Moments of 2006 definitely had a World Cup moment.

Substitute Zico had the chance to win it from the penalty spot but his effort
was saved by Joel Bats. That miss ultimately resulted in a shoot-out, which despite a miss from the
inspirational Platini, France won to set up another semi-final meeting with West
Germany. 1938 first round: Brazil 6 Poland 5

Brazil were well-equipped to become the first side to win the World Cup on the
?other? continent when they arrived in France, with Leonidas the brightest star
at the competition. He grabbed the first of 11 goals in an incredible match in Strasbourg?s Meinau
Stadium. The game finished 4-4 after 90 minutes and by the end of the added
period Leonidas had scored a hat-trick, team-mate Peracio had two and poor
Ernest Wilimowski had hit four for Poland, but his team were out of the
tournament. As for Brazil, they decided to rest Leonidas for their semi-final against
Italy in readiness for the final. But the outh Americans never made it and in
pre-substitute days the star striker looked on as his team lost 2-1… Puskas suffered an ankle injury in his side?s quarter-final victory over
Brazil and looked far short of fitness, but nevertheless another drubbing looked
on the cards as the Magic Magyars raced into a 2-0 lead inside eight minutes. Ten minutes later though Germany were back on level terms thanks to goals from
Max Morlock and Helmut Rahn, and the latter scored the winner six minutes from
time to seal one of the World Cup?s great shocks. 1966 final: England 4 West Germany 2 (aet)

England?s finest two hours in football got off to an inauspicious start when a
poor Ray Wilson header put a chance on a plate for Helmut Haller. The hosts roared back with a Geoff Hurst header and a scrambled Martin Peters
goal and were seconds from glory when a free-kick caused confusion in the box
and Wolfgang Weber equalised. “You?ve beaten them once, go out and beat them again,” Alf Ramsey told
his players and, inspired by the tireless running of Alan Ball, England scored
twice more. Hurst?s first effort has been the source of controversy over whether his shot
crossed the line after bouncing down off the underside of the bar, while his
second late on in the added period was defined by Kenneth Wolstenholme?s
immortal commentary: “Some people are on the pitch, they think it?s all over.

We have to develop a team which can play several qualifying campaigns without big changes in personnel. I managed to do that when I was first in charge, and I’ll try to do that again. We have the potential to do well and Blaž Slišković demonstrated that when his players came so close to reaching UEFA EURO 2004™ and then the World Cup in 2006. All rights reserved.

Picking the winners in 2007

I am also addressing those who examine these for-now-annual predictions on the sports year to come. After some respectable performances in the past, I swung and missed the target as often as an American Ryder Cup golfer last time around. Who could have guessed (really) that Brazil would fail to dazzle at the World Cup and that Zinédine Zidane would end up looking more like a villain than a hero despite taking France all the way to the final? Or that the Americans would whiff on home sod in their alleged national pastime of baseball? Or that Australia’s amphibian thespian, Ian Thorpe, would retire at the age of 24 despite all those sponsorship contracts still available for the next Olympics? Or that the new Wembley stadium in London would not open in 2006, after all? Perhaps I should have seen that last one coming, but I’m still as optimistic as a baseball fan in April or a soccer fan in August, and so, with no further backing and filling, here are some of this year’s prime story lines and possible outcomes in roughly chronological order.
