BBC SPORT | Football | Europe | Beckham in limbo over Real future
BBC News – Jan 15, 2007
Beckham, who captained the side and won 94 caps, was dropped by new national team coach Steve McClaren after the 2006 World Cup. “It is a bit of a shame. He has a lot still to give for England but I think that maybe could be the end of it,” said Charlton. The World Cup winner added: “It seems it was on the cards that at some time in his career that he would finish up in that sort of position in Hollywood, in Los Angeles. “It is very glamorous and he lives a glamorous lifestyle, so I suppose it is fitting.

Vogts named as Nigeria coach
BBC News – Jan 15, 2007
Lulu says despite keen interest from former Nigerian coach Philippe Troussier, Vogts previous achievements were too good to be ignored. “He has a very strong track record, he won the World Cup with Germany as assistant coach to Franz Beckenbeur. “Vogts also won the European Cup with Germany in 1996 and such a landmark put him miles above others,” Lulu added. Former international defender Eguavoen, who has been caretaker boss since June 2005, is expected to assist the new foreign coach. It has been a long drawn chase by Nigeria for an expatriate coach since Dutchman Jo Bonfrere was dismissed in April 2001. In the past six years, the poor finances of the NFA and government interferences have scuttled the drive to hire a foreign coach… It has been a long drawn chase by Nigeria for an expatriate coach since Dutchman Jo Bonfrere was dismissed in April 2001. In the past six years, the poor finances of the NFA and government interferences have scuttled the drive to hire a foreign coach. Troussier, who qualified Nigeria for the 1998 World Cup in France, declined the job in July 2005 after insisting that the Eagles did not stand a chance of overtaking group leaders Angola in the qualifying tournament for the 2006 World Cup. Former England World Cup star Bryan Robson was also appointed coach by the NFA on the eve of the 2004 African Nations Cup in Tunisia only for the country’s sports ministry to veto the appointment. Nigeria’s biggest glories in international football have all been achieved under foreign coaches. Bonfrere was in charge when the country became the first African team to win Olympic soccer gold in 1996 while compatriot Clemens Westerhof led the Eagles to a second Nations Cup triumph in Tunisia in 1994. Nigeria first won the Nations Cup on home soil in 1980 under the Brazilian Otto Gloria.

Australian soccer kicks on, and on
The Age – Jan 13, 2007
Buoyed by the success of the A-League and the Socceroos’ heroic World Cup exploits, and driven by increasing demand from families and younger fans who have plugged into the game’s global appeal, soccer has been the hot ticket through 2006 into 2007. It is a national story, with participation and support for the game growing in most locations. But the impact in Melbourne, where the city’s A-League club, Melbourne Victory, has dominated the competition, has been extraordinary. Victory sealed the Premier’s Plate (for the team that finishes top of the table after the home-and-away season) with four rounds to spare. It has also set attendance records all season, culminating in the sport’s first 50,000-plus crowd for a domestic match when it hosted reigning champion Sydney at Telstra Dome just before Christmas… The fact the national anthem was played before the kick-off of games in the old National Soccer League — a symbolic gesture designed (not always with success) to emphasise the unity of the players and crowds in their new land — seemed to serve only to emphasise its difference and sense of otherness. But the game was also known, with good reason, as the sleeping giant. The established codes of Australian rules football, rugby union and rugby league, while luxuriating in their market dominance, were always wary of its potential and capacity to make sweeping inroads in the Australian sporting landscape, if it could ever get its act together. Possessing a huge latent fan base of migrants and their descendants, for whom it was always a first-choice sport, soccer was held back by its perennial lack of organisation, a victim of its own mismanagement as a succession of leaders led it through a series of false dawns to eventual bankruptcy. There were no television deals, no sponsorship and no credibility until Australia’s second-richest man, property billionaire Frank Lowy, a lifelong lover of the game, was persuaded to head a revolutionary makeover of the sport nearly four years ago. Mr Lowy, the boss of the Westfield property group, had the ear of Prime Minister John Howard and the clout to attract high-flyers (including Melbourne Major Events supremo Ron Walker) on to the board of a newly constituted Football Federation of Australia. The luring of administrator John O’Neill from the Australian Rugby Union, the creation of the A-League (contested by a clutch of new clubs with no sectarian or ethnic connections, which could appeal to the whole of the population) played a key role.

I don’t know if it would be me, as I don’t have any long-term projects as yet, but we will see. “Scolari, 58, who turned down the chance to become England manager this summer, also claimed he had been offered the Brazil job by Brazilian Football Confederation president Ricardo Teixeira before Dunga was appointed earlier this year. “(After the 2006 World Cup), the president (Teixeira) called me to see if there was a possibility to return to the national team,” said Scolari, who led Brazil to glory at the 2002 World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan. “I discussed it with my family and they advised me that it was not the right time to return. The Question: How Do You Want To See The World Cup Final… – Jan 15, 2007
FIFA president Sepp Blatter, though, has expressed his thoughts about doing away with penalty kicks to decide the World Cup final. The alternative, as Blatter sees it, is to stage a replay of the World Cup final 48 hours later at the same venue if the first match ends in a draw. What do you think? What is the best way to decide the World Cup finals: penalty kicks or keep replaying the match until there is a definitive winner? What about the old Golden Goal? Should that be re-instated instead?Use the comment box below to share your thoughts!.

Racism charge puts Emre’s future in jeopardy – Jan 13, 2007
Emre, 26, has protested his innocence but should he be found guilty, not only does he face possible suspension, he would feel the wrath of manager Glenn Roeder as well. It seems almost certain he would be ushered away from St James’ Park in disgrace. He was formally charged with “using racially-aggravated abusive and or insulting words” following an incident… “Newcastle say Emre, who signed a five-year contract following a £5 million transfer from Inter Milan in 2005, plans to deny the charge. He has until Jan 29 to respond. Emre is no stranger to controversy and was involved in an unpleasant touchline spat with Reading coach Wally Downes recently on Tyneside and received a fine and four-match international ban following a post-match brawl following a 2006 World Cup qualifier with Switzerland. Emre’s agent Ahmet Bulut has defended his client, stating: “On the field, he is an aggressive player, like other players are, but he would never make racist remarks. ” Tottenham captain Ledley King will be pushed through the pain barrier to ensure he is ready to face arch rivals Arsenal in the Carling Cup semi-final double header. King has missed the past three weeks with a bruised foot and will miss the Premiership game against Newcastle at White Hart Lane tomorrow. Spurs manager Martin Jol says he cannot afford to be without King for too much longer and will pitch him straight back into first-team action — regardless of whether or not he has made a 100 per cent recovery.

Calderón Stabs At “Bullfighter” Beckham – Jan 15, 2007
It has been all strictly business. Beckham is just thinking of retirement. Sure Becks has a year or two more of good football in him, but nobody in Europe was going to give him five more. Who in their right mind would refuse that sum of money, and for five years more of playing (even if not playing well)!? I can only hope that all the money being spend to take him to the States helps the sport grow at least a little bit, and that it doesn’t choke the league to death. I hope they’ve done their math properly and bringing him will make more money than he cost. In the US people won’t chase him around because he would be just another super celebrity (in fact, less known than many) and he plays a sport that is not very popular just yet.
