Scored
over 1,000 goals in a career spent almost entirely with Brazilian side Santos
but Pele was far more than a simple predator and created openings for others
with his astonishing and audacious skills. Injury curtailed his appearances in
the 1962 and 1966 competitions but he returned at the peak of his powers in
1970, leading arguably the greatest football team ever assembled to a third
World Cup crown in Mexico. Diego Maradona (Argentina)

Maradona?s promise was spotted in the slums of Buenos Aires and he became the
undoubted star footballer of the 1980s with Argentina and with Italian side
Napoli. He hit his peak in the 1986 finals in Mexico, leading an otherwise
average Argentina side to glory with his dazzling skill and will to win, plus a
little help from the ?Hand of God?. Drug problems blighted his career thereafter
but his talents as a playmaker were unrivalled. Johan Cruyff (Holland)… Inventive, original and most definitely a one-off, Cruyff was
imperious as the Dutch cruised to the 1974 final. They were surprisingly beaten
by hosts West Germany, denying Cruyff international honours to go alongside his
incredible club achievements with Ajax and Barcelona. He went on to manage the
latter with spectacular results and is still highly influential in Catalonia. Franz Beckenbauer (West Germany)

Caught the eye at the 1966 World Cup as an all-action midfielder but his
finest hour was as West Germany?s sweeper and skipper on home territory in 1974.

As Ghana hosted the tournament in 1999, talents emerged who are still making headlines. Modeste Mbami and Daniel Ngom Kome failed to make Cameroon shine they did end up in the books of European scouts. Ghana’s Laryea Kingston, who missed the 2006 World Cup only due to a hefty suspension, scored the only goal in the final against West African rivals Nigeria. Meanwhile, the performances of Zambia’s Andrew Sinkala guided his team to the 1997 Fifa World Championships in Nigeria. With all respect to the names mentioned, surely one of the most distinguished to graduate from this level is Nigeria’s Jay-Jay Okocha, who participated at the 1993 championships in Mauritius. Nigeria performed poorly on the island but the midfielder’s displays against Ghana and Cameroon made it clear he was destined for greater heights. Only in 1991 did the under-20 competition become a proper tournament as it had previously been a knock-out tournament to decide which teams qualified for the Fifa World Youth Championships.

Representatives of Europe’s 52 national associations will be called to place their votes by secret ballot, among them SFA chief executive David Taylor. It remains uncertain in which direction Scotland’s vote will be cast, but although the Scottish FA has always had a cosy relationship with Johansson, weighing equally heavily on Taylor’s mind is sure to be Platini’s promise to bring in legislation to limit each member nation to three Champions League entrants, in order to see more actual champions from all across Europe qualifying for the competition. That should directly benefit Scottish football, as should his apparent endorsement of the SFA’s recent motion to extend European Championship finals competitions from 16 to 24 teams. With Platini’s platform also likely to find support from the Eastern bloc, and most members of the G14 likely to be appalled by the developments, there is credence in suggestions of an east-west split. David Will is due to retire his lifelong role as Fifa vice president on Uefa’s all-powerful executive committee formally at the end of May, and has had some preparation for his imminent retirement with a month-long holiday in New Zealand. Ever since the intervention of another Kiwi, Charles Dempsey, in the voting for the 2006 World Cup, such contests have had a reputation for corruption. But Will for one believes the issues at stake are so stark that there is no prospect of the most important job in European football being decided by some orchestrated carve-up, nor for the intervention of controversial Fifa president Sepp Blatter to influence proceedings one way or the other… With Platini’s platform also likely to find support from the Eastern bloc, and most members of the G14 likely to be appalled by the developments, there is credence in suggestions of an east-west split. “On some occasions I would say these things could be a carve-up, but genuinely on this occasion I don’t think so. I think each national association will vote very much on their own interests.

Greening The Super Bowl

5, the day after Super Bowl XLI in Miami, in a bad mood. But Jack Groh, director of the National Football League’s environmental program, will be all smiles regardless of who wins. Groh is spearheading the NFL’s third go at offsetting greenhouse gas emissions created during the big game at Dolphin Stadium. A green Super Bowl? Yes, and more events like it keep popping up… Groh is spearheading the NFL’s third go at offsetting greenhouse gas emissions created during the big game at Dolphin Stadium. A green Super Bowl? Yes, and more events like it keep popping up. The green-events list includes the Indy 500, Fifa World Cup and 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy. There is enough demand for green events that the United Nations Environmental Program recently held a conference on sports and the environment where participants discussed topics ranging from the impact of building design and how to harvest rainwater to methods of trash disposal.

ABC Sport – Football – Shevchenko aiming to silence critics
abc.net.au – Jan 19, 2007
Liverpool have won two of their last three meetings with Chelsea but were beaten 1-0 when the clubs last met, in September, at Stamford Bridge in the league and only victory can realistically keep alive their slim hopes of winning the title. They will once again have to cope without Luis Garcia, sidelined for the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury, while winger Mark Gonzalez is set to be ruled out with shin trouble. Liverpool badly need a good result following their League Cup and FA Cup exits against fourth-placed Arsenal, themselves at home to Manchester United on Sunday in what is being billed the Premiership’s ‘Grand Slam’ weekend. “We’ve closed well on Chelsea but know we could be much closer, if not level with them,” said Liverpool defender Steve Finnan. “However, it does tell us that the title race is not over by a long stretch yet. We have had our most difficult away games already. We’ve still got some tough home games to come, but we can take points from all the teams around us and close the gap even more.

ABC Sport – Football – Beckham’s wages ‘resented’ by new…
abc.net.au – Jan 20, 2007
“I think, as we all are fans of soccer, he is David Beckham and a wise man told me you’re worth what you negotiate,” Vagenas told BBC Radio on Friday. “But at the same time, of course there’s resentment, I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t. ”

Vagenas, a holding midfielder, has been with the Galaxy for six years and was a member of the US football team at the 2000 Olympics. According to the BBC, Beckham’s contract means he will be earning 500 times more each week than most of his Galaxy team-mates. “He’s not stealing the money,” added Vagenas of Beckham. “On the one hand more power to him and on the other you say ‘why can’t I be getting some of that?’.

The teenager came of age with a stellar displays against Madrid in the UEFA Champions League and earned himself a remarkable eight-year contract extension. Even Andrea Pirlo’s brilliance in the World Cup was not enough to dislodge Fabregas from the Team of the Year. Attacking midfield – Kaká (AC Milan)Milan endured an annus horribilis but Kaká enjoyed an amazing 2006 on a personal level. He was one of the few Brazil players to shine at the World Cup and was Milan’s star as they reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. He scored a stunning hat-trick against RSC Anderlecht, his second of the year, and he has been arguably the most in-form player in Europe in recent months. Left midfield – Ronaldinho (FC Barcelona)After inspiring Barcelona to their UEFA Champions League triumph, Ronaldinho supposedly suffered a dip in form. Granted, he failed to show his best form at the World Cup but he scored 12 goals in 15 games in the last three months of 2006 to defy rumours of his decline.

Brown backs England bid for 2018 World Cup
Guardian Unlimited – Jan 20, 2007
The chancellor said polling for the Treasury and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport showed overwhelming public support for the bid, even among Scottish football fans, with the boost to national unity and the economy the main reasons cited. Although the cost of hosting the London Olympics has already gone over budget, the Treasury is confident that the cost of the World Cup will be lower, since England already has enough modern stadiums to host a tournament of 32 teams. After the botched attempt to host the tournament in 2006, Mr Brown reassured the FA that a bid would get government backing, provided it was backed by a feasibility study and on the basis that planning started at once. Bidding for the 2018 World Cup closes in 2010, with the winner announced two years later. The 2010 World Cup is being held in South Africa, and Brazil – five times winners of the event – is the likely venue in 2014. In a separate announcement in Mumbai yesterday, the chief executive of the Premier League, Richard Scudamore, said that Africa was being given the right to televise live games free, following lobbying from the chancellor. The move will allow 390 million people to watch live games, but will be limited to matches on Saturday and Monday evenings.

ESPN.com – MLB – Mitchell asks for increased cooperation from owners
ESPN – Jan 19, 2007
“The steroids issues continue to emerge, and the public wants to know. For some reason they want to know more about baseball on steroids than they do football or basketball. So it’s certainly focused on this. — Astros owner Drayton McLaneMitchell, who is investigating steroid use in the sport, said the chances of government involvement will “significantly increase” if they don’t cooperate with him. Speaking to owners on the final day of baseball’s quarterly meetings, Mitchell said he intends to interview active players and raised the possibility that Congress or other government authorities could compel testimony. “I believe it will be in your best interests, and the best interests of baseball, if I can report that I have received full cooperation from your organizations, and from others, in conducting this investigation,” Mitchell said in remarks that were released to reporters.
