Owen Hargreaves column
BBC News – Jan 23, 2007
But coming back from a pretty serious injury, it was crucial I worked as hard as I could every day to reach a good level for when we met up again. I am not sure exactly why the winter break started but I’m sure it has something to do with the weather, as traditionally it gets pretty cold in the winter in Germany. I can assure you it’s not much fun playing football when it’s minus five degrees outside – your muscles freeze for a start!

The players definitely appreciate the winter break. Not only physically but also mentally. It is important to know from the middle of November that you can invest all your energy and then you have got a break. Whereas for players in the Premiership, it’s the opposite. You can’t go at it 100% for every game when you’re playing every three days, mentally that must be very draining… I think it largely depends on what you’re used to. I’m used to having a winter break – the other England players aren’t. We had a relatively long break before the 2006 World Cup where we could prepare for the tournament but it is coming at the end of a very long season. Mentally you are always thinking about the next game in a World Cup so it is very difficult to relax. I think it’s easy to make pros and cons for a winter break. I think as international footballers we’re used to things going on in the summer, we are used to having relatively short breaks. Physically, football has become very draining.

IOL: Parreira due in SA to train 2010 squad
Independent Online – Jan 23, 2007
“The coach is arriving in the country on Friday morning at around 7. 15,” South African Football Association (SAFA) chief executive Raymond Hack told AFP, adding that he was expected to get
to work immediately. Parreira is due to hold a brief meeting with his bosses and will later meet SAFA’s national executive for the first time this year. He is expected to announce his coaching plans for the team at the end of this month… Parriera, who will earn R1,8-million a
month, faces the daunting task of turning the Bafana Bafana team into a force to be reckoned with for the 2010 event which is being held in South Africa. The embattled team has been performing dismally recently and failed to qualify for last year’s World Cup finals in Germany. The 2006 Brazilian World Cup team coach signed a four-year contract with SAFA six months ago after a poor performance by his team in Germany. His first test will be an away game against Chad in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on March 24.

IG Group H1 profit up 45 pct UPDATE
Forbes – Jan 22, 2007
‘All in all, these results were pretty much bang in line,’ said Investec analyst Daniel Havercroft, who has a ‘hold’ stance on the stock. ‘The increase in marketing expenditure was to be expected, as they’re in more jurisdictions than they were before. ‘ First-half revenues at IG’s smaller UK-based sports betting business jumped 37 pct to 6 mln stg, fuelled by the 2006 World Cup football tournament. Howkins said the unit could also benefit from the cricket World Cup, which starts in mid-March, although he acknowledged the England team’s recent five-nil whitewash at the hands of Australia in the Ashes Test series could dampen customer enthusiasm. ‘Given the drubbing England got, there’s a chance clients won’t want anything to do with cricket for a while,’ he said. IG is paying an interim dividend of 2 pence per share, up from 1. 5 pence a year earlier.

ESPN.com – GOLF – Sirak: Tiger golf is back
ESPN – Jan 22, 2007
The last time we saw Tiger in a PGA Tour event was Oct. 1 when he was a 30-year-old guy putting away the field by eight strokes at the American Express Championship in England. He has since turned 31 and announced to the world that sometime this summer his first child will be born. That announcement was soon followed by his revelation he was skipping the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship and would begin his year instead at the tournament sponsored by the car company from whom he receives a rather generous annual check. So as we await Tiger to tee it up this week at Torrey Pines, these questions rattle around in our Super Bowl-addled heads: Will Tiger be in top form? Will Mickelson do what he did in 2000 at Torrey Pines and stop Tiger’s six-in-a-row streak? Will the TV ratings go through the roof? And, most curiously, does Tiger know he is tied for 129th place in FedEx Cup points?Vijay Singh is first with 4,621, Paul Goydos comes next at 4,564 followed by Charley Hoffman at 4,500. Woods is tied with Dustin and Abbie Hoffman at zero. But, in a statement probably as far off the mark as when President Abraham Lincoln said in the Gettysburg Address: “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here.

Irish Times – Jan 23, 2007
Chile won 2-0 and the Italians were later attacked at their training camp. When ‘highlights’ of the match were shown on BBC television, David Coleman introduced the game thus: “Good evening. The game you are about to see is the most stupid, appalling, disgusting and disgraceful exhibition of football, possibly in the history of the game. ”
1982: Kuwait’s phantom whistle

Kuwait had drawn their first match against an abject Czechoslovakia and held out for the first half-hour against a talented France side in their second Group B encounter. France went 3-1 ahead and ought to have made it four, when Alain Giresse ran through the Kuwaiti defence and slotted the ball past Ahmad Al-Tarabulsi. The Kuwaitis were furious, insisting they had stopped because they had heard a whistle, which had actually been blown in the crowd. They surrounded Soviet referee Miroslav Stupar and team manager Sheikh Al-Sabah appeared on the touchline to order his players off the pitch… Terrified, he telephoned two neutral officials who attempted to intervene on his behalf. Amazingly they themselves were reprimanded, and Jean-Joseph was flown home to Haiti to face the music. 1930: Balls up in inaugural final

The first World Cup may not have been greeted with widespread enthusiasm, particularly in Europe, which provided only four of the finalists. But the final, between South American rivals Uruguay and Argentina, was anything but irrelevant. Argentinian Luis Monti received a death threat and Belgian referee John Langenus demanded a quick escape route plan to get back to his ship. On the day of the final all hell broke loose when both camps demanded the use of a ball manufactured in their own country. Following a heated argument there was deadlock, before Langenus came up with the ingenious idea of playing with different balls either side of half-time.

Paul McGinley at 40: still a driven Man
Belfast Telegraph – Jan 24, 2007
The answer might depends on who you ask – one might reasonably expect Fabio Grosso, Italy’s match-winner in Berlin last summer, to have a vastly different perspective on penalty shoot-outs than French fall guy David Trezeguet. Yet few are better placed than Ireland’s Paul McGinley to cast an expert eye across this sporting divide. Forever famous for sinking the putt which broke American hearts at The Belfry in 2002, football fanatic Paul certainly is no stranger to the big match atmosphere at club and international level. As a Celtic follower, he’s had first hand experience of the uproarious backdrop to Glasgow’s Old Firm matches, while McGinley also followed West Ham all the way to last year’s FA Cup final in Cardiff… So I’m young in golfing terms. There’s not a lot of mileage on the clock and if the big ‘D’ in sport stands for desire, I’ve no shortage of that. " If McGinley rose splendidly to the occasion once again at the 2006 Ryder Cup, that glorious week at The K Club stood out like a beacon in a season darkened by frustration and near-despair. After surfing into the year on the crest of a wave, his memorable victory in the Volvo Masters at Valderrama lifting him to third in the 2005 Volvo Order of Merit and a career-high 20th in the World Rankings, McGinley was rocked by illness, then injury and began to founder in a sea of confusion and self-doubt. "I had a poor season last year and I’ve no one to blame but myself," admitted McGinley, whose downward spiral in 2006 began at Sawgrass last March when a vicious bout of hay fever was compounded by jet lag and his violent reaction to an over-the-counter remedy he bought in America. The feisty Irishman was plainly deflated as he missed the cut by a street at The Players and suffered the same fate at Augusta, while any hope of a morale boost as the European Tour returned to home shores in May was snuffed out when McGinley underwent surgery during the Nissan Irish Open to remove a large sliver of bone from his left knee. "To be honest, I came back sooner than I should," he admitted.

Spanish football plagued by racism, says player
Expatica – Jan 24, 2007
In recent years, soccer has been plagued by racist incidents during matches in a number of countries, and Spain’s professional soccer league called last year on everyone involved in the sport to step up efforts against racism. During a match in March 2006, fans in Zaragoza hurled racist taunts at Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o, a standout with the visiting Barcelona squad. Eto’o tried to abandon the field after a section of the stands emitted ape-like howls every time he touched the ball, but he was prevailed upon by team mates and the coach to continue playing and helped Barcelona to a 2-0 victory against the home team. Two years ago, Eto’o was also the target of racist taunts by fans when Barcelona played Zaragoza. FIFA targeted racism in soccer throughout last year’s World Cup tournament. At all of the 64 matches played during the World Cup, large signs saying “The World among Friends” and “Say No to Racism” were on display… Eto’o tried to abandon the field after a section of the stands emitted ape-like howls every time he touched the ball, but he was prevailed upon by team mates and the coach to continue playing and helped Barcelona to a 2-0 victory against the home team. ESPN.com – GOLF – Rosaforte: Will new era mean a new Phil?
ESPN – Jan 24, 2007
“I just can’t wait to get started. I’m really excited about this year. Reading between the lines, the FedEx Cup has become a way to keep Mickelson motivated beyond the PGA Championship. Tiger can win his two majors, another money title, another Player of the Year title — but like the Chargers (or the Colts last year), he could get knocked out of the playoffs, or at least not win the Super Bowl. “What’s cool is that we actually have something to play for now at the end of the year, as opposed to having the money list already decided, the Player of the Year already decided and [the Tour Championship] just being a tournament for the top 30 on tour,” he said. “This is going to be a four-tournament stretch that will decide a lot. What it will decide is who takes home a $10 million retirement package, but if that’s enough to motivate Phil, the game is better for it.
