Toronto Star – Jan 13, 2007
"I’m not coming (to the U. ) to be a superstar, but to be a part of a team. " Boy, that line must have had them squirming back at the MLS bunker. Beckham is having understandable trouble accepting that he’s now a salesman, albeit a ludicrously well recompensed one. He is here to impress the rubes and blaze a path for other, future stars. Scoring a few goals would help, but not if that comes at the expense of his stadium dedications or talkshow appearances… The world’s current best player had been spurned by Real in favour of Beckham because he was "too ugly," in the words of an anonymous team official. Even Beckham’s England career – closed with finality now that he’s moving to the States – was more often disappointing than not. He never took the immensely talented team past the quarter-finals of any major tournament and played the goat twice – after being red-carded in World Cup 1998 and missing a crucial penalty in Euro 2004. So what we have here is a story very familiar in L. – the fading star who can’t gracefully accept a changing role. Beckham’s not quite Joe Louis shaking hands at the doors to Caesar’s Palace, but he’s now closer to that than he is to real soccer glory.

At his best a truly special talent, the 27-year-old has decided that neither his body nor his psyche are up to the demands of professional football. Surprising timingWhile the decision itself may not have been a surprise, the timing was. Having just come back from another major injury to his right knee, the FC Bayern München midfielder had appeared optimistic but this week he put out a statement reading: “I can’t trust my knee any more. I don’t enjoy playing football any more. ” In a hastily-arranged press conference, a visibly-pale Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness had a hard time keeping his poise. “He is one of the best players Germany has ever had,” Hoeness said… Physical injuries were again the partial cause. Torn cruciate ligaments and cartilage, hamstring problems, groin surgery, knee rupture, tendon damage – not entries from a medical dictionary, but some of the complaints experienced by the luckless Deisler. The endSidelined during UEFA EURO 2004™ due to his troublesome knee – which to date has been operated on five times – history repeated itself to deny him a place at the 2006 World Cup on home soil after cartilage damage sustained in a friendly against Italy. Though he played again in November, with a notably excellent performance against Hamburger SV, he picked up a thigh injury in training in mid-December, and any optimism expressed about his future prospects was not shared by Deisler. “It has been an ordeal for me,” he said on announcing his retirement after 36 caps and just 135 Bundesliga appearances spanning nine years – never more than 25 in a single season. Beckenbauer hopeSome are still envisioning a comeback – his contract remains valid until 2009 and Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer said: “Who says that in six months’ time he won’t feel physically and mentally fit to return? The door is always open for Sebastian Deisler. ” Fans have also launched a website urging him to carry on, but it seems the heartbreaking tale of Deisler’s playing career really is over.

“we’ve had a great Christmas period,” he said. “Nine points in two games – I’d have taken that before. “Worcester coach John Brain has urged his team not to “fragment” under pressure as they battle against relegation. A 27-20 defeat at the hands of Harlequins left the Warriors nine points adrift of Northampton at the foot of the table and with only one win in the league this season. “We’ll be totally written off now and we’ve got nothing to lose,” said Brain. “The test is what happens over the next few weeks. As a team we can either fragment or we can stay together… “Scolari’s big hopeSoccer: Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has revealed that he would relish managing Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, should his native country win the right to host the event. Brazil are firm favourites to be awarded football’s showpiece event in eight years time, with Colombia the only other country to have submitted a bid. Yesterday, Scolari announced his intention to quit as Portugal manager after Euro 2008 and he has followed that up by telling the Lance! newspaper: “I lived that (coaching a home nation) in the Euro 2004 tournament in Portugal. “All coaches in this situation would like to coach his national team in that moment. I don’t know if it would be me, as I don’t have any long-term projects as yet, but we will see. “Scolari, 58, who turned down the chance to become England manager this summer, also claimed he had been offered the Brazil job by Brazilian Football Confederation president Ricardo Teixeira before Dunga was appointed earlier this year. “(After the 2006 World Cup), the president (Teixeira) called me to see if there was a possibility to return to the national team,” said Scolari, who led Brazil to glory at the 2002 World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan.

In recent years, however, he has gone straight back to his hotel room to pluck the strings of his guitar and write a few songs. By day, Leeds-born Clavane, who attended Roundhay School, is the chief sports writer of the Sunday Mirror, but by night he writes songs, has recorded a CD, and working in collaboration with friend Stephen May, his latest project, Still Waiting for Everything, opens at the Halifax Square Chapel Centre for the Arts next week. “I love my job and I travel around the world; one day I’m in Portugal at Euro 2004, then in Milan or Madrid doing an interview,” says Clavane. “But it can be quite a tiring existence and lifestyle. Now I take my guitar with me everywhere I go and just write songs when the event I’m covering is over. “I suppose it is quite unusual in the world of sports journalism to have someone playing a guitar and writing songs, but it’s something I have always loved doing. I find that with travelling around so much, I have plenty of time to write… The play charts the story of Price as she escapes her ordinary world and existence on a council sink estate through her talent – only to find the world turn its back on her. Before the play became the fully formed piece it now is, it was a germ of an idea, something that May wanted to write. “I had this idea, but not sure what to do with it,” says May. Then Clavane played him one of his songs which was called Still Waiting for Everything. It seemed to encompass everything that May wanted to say. “I started writing a script and would send bits of it to Anthony, who would write a song and send it to me and I would write around that,” says May. “The songs and the play arenot separate entities – onedoesn’t exist without the other.

ABC Sport – Football – Shevchenko aiming to silence critics
abc.net.au – Jan 19, 2007
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is expected to start with Shevchenko despite his recent rebukes for the former European Footballer of the Year. Now Shevchenko, who has found himself caught up in the backroom intrigue surrounding Chelsea this season on account of the friendship he is said to enjoy with the club’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, is desperate to end his goal-drought. “If the manager decides I am not capable, I just have to work harder,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what I think. “The situation is I came as a new player, the fee was high and the expectation was high and I’ve been attacked from all sides. ”

A victory at Liverpool would also ensure Chelsea keep pace with United, who are currently six points clear at the top… They will once again have to cope without Luis Garcia, sidelined for the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury, while winger Mark Gonzalez is set to be ruled out with shin trouble. Liverpool badly need a good result following their League Cup and FA Cup exits against fourth-placed Arsenal, themselves at home to Manchester United on Sunday in what is being billed the Premiership’s ‘Grand Slam’ weekend. “We’ve closed well on Chelsea but know we could be much closer, if not level with them,” said Liverpool defender Steve Finnan. “However, it does tell us that the title race is not over by a long stretch yet. We have had our most difficult away games already. We’ve still got some tough home games to come, but we can take points from all the teams around us and close the gap even more.

Vagenas, a holding midfielder, has been with the Galaxy for six years and was a member of the US football team at the 2000 Olympics. According to the BBC, Beckham’s contract means he will be earning 500 times more each week than most of his Galaxy team-mates. “He’s not stealing the money,” added Vagenas of Beckham. “On the one hand more power to him and on the other you say ‘why can’t I be getting some of that?’.

Veart to be rested for Mariners clash

Adelaide United coach John Kosmina says Carl Veart will be rested this week and will not play against Central Coast in Gosford on Sunday. It is the final minor round A-League match for Adelaide and Veart is one of several players troubled by yellow cards. Kosmina said he was not prepared to take a risk with Veart a week out from the finals. “Carl’s got three (yellows), I can’t risk everybody, Ross (Aloisi) has got three, Kristian Rees will be on the bench and he’s got three and Greg Owens (as well),” he said. “So I know that at least Carl will be clear next week should one of the others pick up the fourth booking and then Carl can come back into the side, I don’t have to make another forced change.

Alvin Ceccoli (Getty Images). Ceccoli has a foot injury and did not train with the squad yesterday. Butcher said there was no point rushing Ceccoli back, with a second game against the Jets a week later to decide which team progresses to the preliminary final. “He’s looking very doubtful for the game, he said. “I won’t kid you because at the end of the day I could say he’s going to play and he’s got every chance but that isn’t the case so it is looking very doubtful for Alvin, but you know we’re optimistic for next week.
