Simply qualifying for the first time in their history has filled Angolans with a sense of pride and patriotism not felt through decades of civil war and centuries of colonisation, and it offers promise of what the country can achieve on its own if it puts its mind to it. While Angola is rich in oil and diamonds, it is poor in almost everything else, with most of its 13 million people living on less than ?1. 50 a day and one child in four likely to die from a preventable disease before their fifth birthday. Yet even the poorest shantytowns on the outskirts of the capital Luanda are peppered with national football shirts, and the most ramshackle of taxibuses proudly display the red, black and yellow colours of Angola in the back window… “Everyone here is so proud,” said a beaming Guido Siolengue, administrator with the Luanda Urban Poverty Programme (LUPP). “We never imagined that we could get so far in football, that we would be part of such a big competition. ”

Angola is ready to show off on a world stage, and while its football may not be up there with the likes of Brazil, this is a perfect opportunity to do some image-boosting in other areas. “Today when you speak about Angola, you don’t speak only about war, you speak about football as well,” national coach Oliveira Goncalves said recently. “Many journalists who come to Angola to see our football and meet me and the players conclude that Angola is a country with huge potential. Angola will get better on all levels in the coming years,” he added.

But much else is subjected to sombre scrutiny and occasionally he can touch a raw nerve amongst his countrymen, as when the former Ajax skipper observed that “every disadvantage has its advantage. ” At first glance, it might look like more fodder for the collectors of football quotes but in Holland nobody old enough to remember the traumatic events of July 7th, 1974 was laughing. No team had ever started a World Cup final the way the Dutch did that day in Munich against their bitter rivals, West Germany. From the kick-off they completed 17 passes before Cruyff floated past Berti Vogts and towards the German box. The then 27-year-old was just inside it when Uli Hoeness tripped him to concede a penalty. After Johan Neeskens calmly converted it, Sepp Maier became the first German player in the game to touch the ball as he picked it out of the back of his net. For the next 20 minutes the Dutch – already a sensation at the tournament with their “Total Football”, a style of play based on intelligent passing and constant movement – underlined their status as purveyors of truly beautiful football… The quality of the winner was undisputed althoughno player?s words in relation to it are nearlyas well remembered as those of the Dutch televisioncommentator who cried out despairingly,?They?ve tricked us again. ?Despite their disappointment the Dutch, withthe exception of van Hanegem, attended the postmatch banquet while most of the Germans left tocelebrate at a local bar when it emerged thatwives weren?t invited and Hoeness became involvedin a row with federation officials after hispartner, Susi, was told to leave. Muller, aged just 28, followed the lead of Italy?sAngelo Schiavio 40 years earlier, by announcinghis retirement from international football on thenight he celebrated scoring the winner in aWorld Cup. He had scored 68 goals in 62 gamesfor West Germany and his 14 goals in finals tournamentswas a record. The Dutch suffered an even more devastatingblow when Cruyff said he would not travel to the1978 finals in Argentina as he did not wish toleave his wife for as long again. Four years later, despite many efforts to change his mind, he remainedtrue to his word and the Dutch wereagain beaten in the final. His career, though, continued to mirror Beckenbauer?sover the years that followed.

Today Lineker is known to people with similar hair colour as the guy who used to play football once upon a time, to kids who stay up late he’s the man from Match of the Day. And universally he is the star of the Walkers Crisps advertisements. Twenty years ago he had a World Cup summer which changed his life. This summer he will convey the World Cup to a new generation, with scarcely a look back or a mention of his previous incarnation. He’s still there, doing something he is good at, something which makes him relevant. That’s enough, he reckons. It’s timing really.

FA HOLD FIRE ON WORLD CUP BID: Sporting Life | Six Nations Live,…
Sportinglife.com – Feb 2, 2007
FA chief executive Brian Barwick moved quickly to underline the governing body’s position on a bid after the Government announced they were launching a feasibility study into the possibility of staging the world’s biggest single sport event in 13 years’ time. Chancellor Gordon Brown said it was “about time” the competition came back to this country and said it would provide a chance for Britain to become the “sporting nation of the world” after London won the right to stage the 2012Olympics. Barwick welcomed Governmental support for any bid but emphasised the FA’s stance that it will be at least autumn 2006 before any definite proposals are put in place. He said: “Any successful World Cup bid needs government support, as we saw with the 2012 Olympic success.

Early goals from giant striker Nikola Zigic and Sasa Ilic, both the result of poor defending, put Serbia and Montenegro firmly in control in what could be their last match before the country splits into two nations. However, Dindane’s penalty, following a handball bordering on the ridiculous by Milan Dudic, allowed the African side back into the match while Serbia and Montenegro were then reduced to 10 men before the break by the sending off of substitute Albert Nadj. Dindane’s second-half header then evened things up and then, when Dudic handled again, another penalty was awarded although Dindane spurned the chance of the first 2006 World Cup hat-trick by allowing Kalou to score the penalty. Ivory Coast’s Cyrille Domoraud received his marching orders in stoppage time. There was nothing to play for but pride for both teams with Argentina and Holland having already secured the two Group C qualification berths on offer, although 66,000 spectators still watched a match which saw both teams have a man sent off. After nine minutes the Serbo-Montenegrins took the lead as a long ball from Dejan Stankovic caught out the leaden-footed Ivorian defence, leaving 6ft 8in Zigic to round goalkeeper Boubacar Barry and score. The Ivorians, deprived of the suspended Didier Drogba, should have equalised when Kader Keita dashed down the right and crossed to Dindane but his shot was blocked by goalkeeper Dragoslav Jevric with his feet before Kanga Akale missed the rebound with the goal at his mercy.

Hargreaves voted England’s best
TVNZ – Jan 31, 2007
com), having already been voted England’s bestplayer of the World Cup in Germany by supporters. The Canadian-born midfielder was outstanding in England’s WorldCup quarter-final against Portugal, lost on penalties, and hassince become a transfer target for Manchester United. Yet the 26-year-old’s current standing with the fans is a farcry from last year, when he was a fringe player and was booed whenhe came on in friendlies against Belarus and Hungary and again intheir opening World Cup group win over Paraguay. Commenting on his award, Hargreaves told the FA’s Web site: “Anytime you can receive the support of the fans is very special sothank you to everyone who voted for me. “I’m hoping that 2007 will also be a really good year too. I’mvery nearly ready to start playing again and hopefully I’ll be backplaying for England again soon and I’ve got my eye on the big (Euro2008) qualifiers in March.

END OF THE ROAD FOR RIQUELME
Sportinglife.com – Feb 2, 2007
Riquelme made his debut for his country on November 16, 1997, when the team then managed by Daniel Passarella drew 1-1 with Colombia at La Bombonera. Since then, he has played 37 international matches and scored 8 goals. He played five World Cup matches, all of them in Germany 2006. The playmaker captained his side for the first time in Alfio Basile first game as coach in a friendly against Brazil earlier this month, but he has now decided to call time on his career with his country, citing his mother’s health as the reason for his decision. He said: “I’ve decided not to be part of the national team from now on. I have to think about my mother’s health, so it was an easy decision because of that, but painful. “Since the World Cup finished, she has been taken into hospital twice,” he told Telenoche news show on Channel 13, in an exclusive interview… However, these good performances became less and less frequent, and he arrived in Germany to play the World Cup with the enormous pressure on his shoulders. That pressure affected him and fans made their feelings clear. He added: “I did not want to retire from football without playing a World Cup. Well or badly, I’ve played all the competitions a player can play. And my father saw me playing a World Cup. “Following the defeat to Brazil recently, Riquelme was again the target of the critics. However, he thanked coach Basile for taking him into account.

CANNAVARO SCOOPS BALLON D’OR
Sportinglife.com – Feb 2, 2007
The Real Madrid defender beat countryman and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon into second place – with Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry third – to win France Football magazine’s prestigious Ballon D’Or. Last year’s winner Ronaldinho, the Barcelona and Brazil playmaker, was fourth. Former Juventus man Cannavaro, the first Italian to win the award since Roberto Baggio 13 years ago, said: “My season at Juventus was just outstanding. I played 37 matches and scored four goals, all decisive… I want to thank my Juve team-mates too. “I would like to show the trophy to Naples as it is a very special city, where I grew up. I used to play football in the streets of Naples. “I would love to show it to the kids who are in difficulty over there. The award is normally given to forwards or midfielders, making the centre-back’s achievement in polling 173 votes from European football journalists to win the prize, even more notable. The 33-year-old had an impeccable World Cup as he led Italy to glory in Germany, not once collecting so much as a yellow card as the Azzurri conceded just two goals in seven matches. His tussle with Henry in the final was particularly memorable and, on the night of his 100th cap, Cannavaro came out on top as Italy won 5-3 on penalties when the game ended 1-1 after extra time.

The words there of former Longford Town, Bohemians and Shelbourne defender Avery John who, along with a number of team-mates, may well have sensed their best days were behind them, but now, suddenly face into the greatest competition of them all. A fine achievement indeed for a former eircom League star plying his trade with the smallest country ever to qualify for the finals, writes Paul O’Hehir

But the Trinidadians have trodden a long path to get here. They were close to qualifying for Italia 90 but lost to the United States in a play-off and, as a result, quickly fell off the football radar. Since then, there has been little to cheer in Port of Spain where cricket dominates the sporting headlines in a country whose population is less than Dublin. Recently, though, there has been a considerable upsurge in fortunes with more promising players figuring in foreign leagues – albeit in the lower tiers – thus ensuring a higher standard. However, it was the arrival of former Holland and Real Madrid manager Leo Beenhakker that spurred the ‘Soca Warriors’ on to reach its greatest heights. Following two defeats and a draw in their first three matches of Concacaf qualifying, T&T soccer officials felt Bertille St Clair’s reign had run its course… As one leading T&T soccer official put it recently: “We shall make Fifa proud, we shall make Concacaf proud, but most importantly will we make this nation proud. Trinidad and Tobago will light up Germany like no other country ever has or ever will. ”

These are also reasons why it was chosen by the Brazilian squad for their two-week training period before they travel to Germany. Yet the effect of hosting the World Cup favourites has created remarkable excitement not just in the area but throughout Switzerland. All 48,000 tickets to see the training sessions – almost 3,500 per session, each costing £9 – sold out within 24 hours. Each day Weggis – which has Brazilian flags draped from almost every home – quadruples its population as fans arrive for the sessions and to enjoy the adjacent “carnival” village. The road that leads to the Thermoplan stadium – which cost £600,000 and was built specially for the Brazilians’ stay – is transformed daily into a Brazilian street party. Sixty stalls sell merchandise from flags and T-shirts to South American food and drinks such as guarana, caipirinhas and feijoada… Press interest has also been overwhelming. More than 750 journalists are registered, well over half of whom are Brazilians – many of them broadcasting detailed reports on exactly which warm-up exercises are being used. Highlights of the training sessions have been sold to TV channels in about 40 countries, according to Philippe Huber, chief executive of Kentaro Group, which paid the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) £640,000 for the rights to the sessions and two friendly games against FC Lucerne and New Zealand next week. The games, in Basle and Geneva, both sold out their 33,000 tickets and will be transmitted live in about 100 countries.

The Colombian looked a little like Rudi Voller – a surprise escapee from the top 10 – if the German had been tempted to toy with electric sockets. Roberto Baggio
The Divine Ponytail’s most obvious contribution to World Cup history might be that missed penalty in the 1994 final shoot-out but pipping that incredible goal against Czechoslovakia at Italia 90 into second place is that rat’s tail dangling down his neck. Italians stylish? Not this one… His club, Dallas Burn, later launched a competition, the ‘Mohawk challenge’, allowing free entry to fans with similar cuts. Chris Waddle

The Waddle mullet had blighted English football for years, and in 1990 England let the world in on the Geordie’s guilty secret. Missing a penalty in the semi-final against Germany paled against the damage Waddle had already done his country. A nation steeped in high fashion since the swinging sixties was now the laughing stock. His years in Marseille did little to mend the ways of the errant winger. Paul Breitner

Parreira won’t beg Benni to play for Bafana
Independent Online – Feb 2, 2007
If he is willing to come, he is welcome. Bafana caretaker-coach Pitso Mosimane did attempt to get him to return to the fold, but McCarthy sent a letter to Safa saying he did not want to be considered because he needed time to settle in at his new club and his wife was expecting their first child. McCarthy is now firmly settled as Blackburn’s top scorer this season, and is a father, but has not been selected for next week’s Bafana training camp. ‘I am a bit worried with the finishing’”If at this time players are not available, that does not mean they will not be available in the near future,” said Safa CEO Raymond Hack rather elusively. The feeling is that Safa and Parreira will launch an attempt to get McCarthy back before the African Cup of Nations qualifier in Chad at the end of March… ”

Youth, youth, and more youth, indeed, appears to be the main aspect of Parreira’s vision for 2010. He is still hoping to implement an Under-21 league in South Africa. “I was a Fifa observer at the 2002 World Cup,” he said. “And I saw South Africa play and kept a record. We still have nine players from 2002 in our national team. The team has not been renewed in five years. “We have to try to do that.

Blokhin, who in 2003 became a communist leader of the Ukrainian parliament, fell foul with political rivals who, last year, claimed it illegal for any one person to fulfil two official titles simultaneously. Blokhin was forced to resign. But leading Ukrainian FA officials were desperate to reinstate their manager who had brought the country to the brink of its first ever World Cup appearance. A subsequent court ruling paved the way for Blokhin’s return and this allowed him continue in both roles, but, he was forced to forgo his coaching salary. “Many people said I was living in cuckoo land when I promised to take Ukraine to the World Cup,” Blokhin said recently. “I know they?re going to scream with derision again, but I believe we?re capable of winning it. ”

Fighting talk indeed, but if Ukraine can overcome the fact they’ve a weak midfield and ensure their strike force plays off the front foot, then this side could well be raising eyebrows.
