McLeish’s optimism thanks to Ferguson
Belfast Telegraph – Jan 30, 2007
McLeish, capped 77 times in a playing career that included hundreds of appearances for Ferguson’s all-conquering Aberdeen of the 1980s, has signed a contract with the Scottish FA until the World Cup finals of 2010. The former Motherwell, Hibernian and Rangers manager, who won seven trophies at Ibrox in four years before leaving last summer, will be joined by coaches Andy Watson and Roy Aitken. Their first ambitious aim is to maintain Scotland’s fine form in Euro 2008 qualifying. Under Walter Smith, the Scots won three of their first four matches, including beating France, to lie top of Group B, the toughest section, above France, Italy and Ukraine. The next four games are against Georgia at Hampden on 24 March, against Italy in Bari four days later, in the Faroe Islands on 6 June, and at Hampden against Lithuania on 8 September. On form, nine points from those is a realistic goal, but Scotland are still considered outside shots behind the current chasing trio to fill one of the top two places necessary to reach the finals in Switzerland and Austria. – UEFA EURO 2008™ – News – News Specific – – Jan 24, 2007
“The preparations are ahead of schedule in most cases,” he explained. “So what I would now like to see is the countries and host cities mobilising, so we can achieve the ambience around the competition that we would like. ”
Key timeThe UEFA CEO said that the planning for UEFA EURO 2008™ had now entered its crucial phase. “We normally say now that the comfort zone is over in a project of this size,” Mr Olsson reflected. “Now it’s only about delivery. The kick-off time is there, we cannot move it, we can’t say ‘sorry, there’s going to be a delay and we will play a day after’, it doesn’t work in this project… “Now it’s only about delivery. Ticket demandTicket sales for UEFA EURO 2008™ open on 1 March, and will give a major indication of the massive interest that will be generated in the run-up to tournament. “It will be an important moment for the fans,” said Mr Olsson, “even before we know who has qualified. Everybody in Europe, and I think also a lot of people around the world, will be interested in coming to visit the European Championship. ” The competition will climax with the final in Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion on 29 June 2008.

Lawrie’s dream is to manage mighty Barca
Belfast Telegraph – Jan 30, 2007
And already thoughts have turned to future career plans. Where exactly that future lies beyond his current contract with the Irish FA is far from certain. His deal expires at the end of this year, unless he guides the team to the Euro 2008 finals and Sanchez has never made any secret of the fact that he would like to return to club management eventually. And if he had his pick of clubs it would be the current European Cup holders Barcelona, which is a far cry from Ipswich Town, who he was interviewed by last summer. “Barcelona is a beautiful city in a lovely country and they have a fantstic stadium,” Sanchez told pupils at Dundonald Primary School during a function yesterday. “I will go back to club management some day and I would love for it to be at Barcelona.

I’ve never felt such pain
Belfast Telegraph – Feb 1, 2007
"My hope is that I will be back as soon as possible to help Leeds in the relegation battle and also to play in the Euro qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Sweden in March. I am desperate to play in those matches. "They are crucial for our hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals. I hate missing any game for my country but when they are so important it would be a terrible blow if I couldn’t play. " With Warren Feeney and Steve Jones also struggling with injuries, Northern Ireland’s options up front for the Welsh game are starting to decrease by the day. The smart money would be on manager Lawrie Sanchez going for a strikeforce of Burnley’s Kyle Lafferty and Hibs ace Ivan Sproule.

Speaking yesterday, Taylor said: "Walter’s departure is a serious blow to the Scottish FA. "He has done an excellent job for us and the Scottish national team. We are very disappointed that he has chosen to leave us at this critical time in our Euro 2008 qualification campaign. "In their statement which confirmed Smith’s departure, the SFA claimed "proceedings will require to be raised" against both Smith and Rangers. Initially it seemed the two parties were poles apart in terms of the level of compensation which would be paid. However Rangers were eager to draw a line under the issue, while it was also in the interests of the SFA to move on, as they look to replace the man who has led Scotland to the top of their Euro 2008 qualifying group.

Stoichkov alleges swindles in land deals
Sofia Echo – Jan 22, 2007
Stoichkov said that he would resign from his position if Bulgaria fails to qualify for the Euro 2008 championship. Stoichkov told bTV that resigning would be the most natural thing to do. ?I believe we will qualify for Euro 2008 since the team is good and things are going as I?ve planned,? Stoichkov told Bulgarian National Radio. Stoichkov rejected any possibility to step into politics. He said he has a lot of friends who are politicians, including the mayor of Sofia, Boiko Borisov, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, President Georgi Purvanov and Sliven mayor Yordan Lechkov. According to Stoichkov, the door of the national team is always open to the former captain, Stilian Petrov, who left the team last year.

“The match against Germany is more than just a preparation for the game against Italy,” he said. “If we can get a good result against the World Cup bronze medallists, it will give us a big confidence boost,” he added. That will probably not be enough to give the nation any hope of qualifying for Euro 2008, but the coach is realistic. “There is no getting past France and Italy in this group. My aim is to make it into the top 50 or 60 sides (in the FIFA rankings), which would be a huge success,” concluded Toppmoller.

“Obviously, we don’t like conceding goals and we have to find reasons for that. McClaren should certainly have left Holland in a far more contented mood than when he arrived. He remains upbeat about England’s chances of reaching Euro 2008 even though away wins for Croatia and Russia earlier in the evening nudged his side out of the two qualifying berths. “We are three points behind Croatia but we still have to play them at home, while Russia are one point ahead and we have to play them twice,” observed McClaren, whose side’s next qualifier is in Israel on March 24. “I don’t think this group will start until there are three or four games to go and I believe it will go down to the wire. “I never thought it would be a breeze for anyone. – UEFA Cup – News & Features – News Specific – – Jan 23, 2007
The centre-back has been capped six times, having established himself during UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying. The former FC Famalicão and SC Braga player made five appearances in this season’s UEFA Champions League group stage, having helped Benfica to the quarter-finals last time around. His contribution to the cause earned the following tribute today: “Benfica wish to acknowledge the great professionalism that Ricardo Rocha showed throughout his time at the club. ”
Davenport departureTottenham had created room for Ricardo Rocha by allowing former England Under-21 defender Calum Davenport to go to West Ham United FC last week.

Doyle undergoes sub-zero treatment
January 26, 2007
Kevin Doyle, the 10-goal Reading striker, has undergone revolutionary cryotherapy treatment in his home town of Wexford in a bid to make an earlier than expected return from a hamstring injury. Doyle has been sidelined for the past fortnight after tearing the muscle in a Premiership clash with Everton. Initially handed a six-week recovery timeframe, he was expected to be out of action until the end of February ? but he could yet return to action much earlier, with the possibility that he may yet prove his fitness for the Euro 2008 qualifier in San Marino on February 7th. Cryotherapy ? which entails short sharp exposures to -100 degree temperatures ? has previously been used by Ireland rugby stars Brian O?Driscoll and Gordon D?Arcy to expedite recovery from hamstring injuries. And Royals manager Steve Coppell opted to send Doyle home to undergo the treatment at Ireland?s only cryotherapy centre in Wexford. He said: ?We wanted Kevin to spend time with his family and that was the main reason for his visit.
