The Football Association of Wales’ appeal to the Court of Arbitration forSport to have Russia expelled from the finals in Portugal was dismissed by athree-man panel. The FAW felt the result of their two-legged qualifying play-off with Russialast November should be overturned by UEFA when it emerged that midfielder IgorTitov tested positive for the banned substance Bromantan after the first leg. Titov then played 59 minutes of the second leg in Cardiff, but the Court ofArbitration agreed with UEFA that a 12-month suspension for the player wassufficient punishment, and that there should be no collective sanction imposedupon Russia. FAW secretary-general David Collins accepted the decision of the CAS asbinding and insisted it was now time to look forward to the start of the WorldCup 2006 qualifying campaign this autumn. “We are very disappointed that we couldn’t persuade CAS to overturn thedecision of UEFA and to punish the Football Union of Russia,” he said… 4 which says a national association has to be implicated in the offence and Ibelieve that’s where we’ve failed in the end. “Both parties agreed that the Court of Arbitration for Sport was the finalappeals panel and that they having ruled ends the matter. “We now rebuild and prepare for the World Cup 2006 qualifiers which start inSeptember,” he told Sky Sports News. “We start away to Azerbaijan, come home to play Northern Ireland, and then ofcourse we play England in October. They are very, very big matches for us andthe whole nation will look forward to those games. And Wales manager Mark Hughes has talked of his disappointment at thedecision. “It’s disappointing and frustrating because cheats have prospered,” Hughestold BBC Wales.

World Cup 2006. It is a new era for Ivorian football,” Anouma

and encourage the players. He expressed the wish that the victory would “mark the beginning
of the development of infrastructure, the availing of means for
the much-awaited professionalism of Ivorian football to come true
so players can live on their talent”. “This victory of the Elephants first belongs to God,” he added,
citing the first verse of David, Chapter 127 in the Holy Bible:
“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build
it”. “To the Ivorian people, who were fantastic, this qualification of
the Elephants also belongs to you,” added Anouma.

His team-mate Erassa Affo, says: “It’s a big change in my life, in my future, so I’m very happy. We have difficult opponents, they are some of the biggest teams in the world, but we will try our best.

FA YET TO DECIDE OVER 2006 BREAK
Sportinglife.com – Feb 9, 2007
usSven-Goran Eriksson faces an anxious wait to find out whether the Football Association and the Premier League can answer his plea for a four-week break ahead of the 2006 World Cup finals. The England coach may yet find that although the Barclays Premiership programme is completed by his deadline, the FA Cup final has to be delayed for a further six days until May 20. And with the rest of European domestic football now scheduled to grind to a halt on May 14 next year, that would leave him seriously frustrated. After all, if two leading sides are involved in the FA Cup final, which should mark the unveiling of the new Wembley, then his preparations would be interrupted if England qualify for the tournament, which starts on June 9, 2006. The FA and the Premier League have both vowed to do all they can to heed Eriksson’s call, with the fixture-planners set to continue their unenviable task over the next month or so.

ENGLAND WORLD CUP CAN SUCCEED – WILL
Sportinglife.com – Feb 9, 2007
Scottish lawyer Will, one of the 24-man FIFA executive committee who decide on World Cup hosts, believes an England bid would have much more chance of successthan when they bid for the 2006 tournament but polled just two votes. Will said: “I would think England would have a very strong bid. The English bid for 2006 was much stronger than appeared from the pattern of voting but so much has changed since then anyway. “Since they bid for 2006 the FA have started an enormous international assistance programme. “They suddenly realised after the 2006 bid that the FA had become a little bit unknown in some parts of the world and have started this huge programme – that’s bound to help. “Many other things have been developed too that would make a bid much stronger next time. Will said there was a “strong likelihood” that the 2018 tournament would be in Europe – under FIFA’s new rotational system South Africa are the hosts in 2010 and a South American country – probably Brazil – in 2014… We don’t want to dilute the potency of our bid for 2012. The outcome of that could have a bearing so we want to wait for the 2012 bid to be resolved before we progress any further. An FA spokesman added: “Hosting a World Cup would be a brilliant boost for English football. “We have shown in the past that we can host major events with Euro 96 being an outstanding example but at this moment we still need to get a clearimpression of the Government’s thinking. UK Sport have been ordered to develop a strategy on bidding for ‘mega-events’ up to the year 2022. Part of this includes a campaign to boost Britain’s profileon international sporting bodies and develop a more professional footing before bidding for major events. John Scott, UK Sport’s director of international relations and major events, said a bid for the World Cup would not be determined by the success or failureof the Olympic campaign.

If so he is deluding himself. That might seem harsh at the end of a World Cup challenge in which he contributed, directly or indirectly, to 50% of England’s six-goal output. He still strikes a football as sweetly as anyone on the planet and his set-piece delivery, while no longer as consistent as at his peak, remains a potent weapon. But like a fading flower at the end of a long, dry summer his talents are showing severe signs of wither and fatigue. Never blessed with genuine pace, the legs no longer carry him from box to box as they did in his prime. No longer can he seize a match in the way he single-handedly inspired his team-mates in England’s World Cup qualifier against Greece in 2001, through sheer will and vibrant energy. For me that remains his greatest performance in a football shirt and the memory afterwards of him walking, hand in hand with his toddler son Brooklyn, through the corridors of Old Trafford while being applauded by staff and media alike, will live forever.

ERIKSSON WILL NOT QUIT – KAMARA
Sportinglife.com – Feb 9, 2007
Eriksson has been a regular guest on Kamara’s TV show and he outlined his plans for the future of the England team rather than prepare to vacate his post while the two had dinner in Amsterdam, claimed the former Bradford boss. Kamara told The Sun: “Sven is not going anywhere. “There was never any hint he would not be in charge for the qualifying matches or the 2006 World Cup. “He feels that he has a job to do and just wants to concentrate on doing it to the best of his ability. “Sven is clearly thinking about the future and how he wants to build on England’s performance in Portugal. The 46-year-old, who played for nine clubs in a career spanning 18 years, also insisted there was no evidence Eriksson was concerned about the outcome of the inquiry. He said: “If he is a worried man, he’s making an excellent job of hiding it.

I have discussed this with the FA already. “It’s time for somebody else in England to have a go and I will do everything I can to prepare them.

So far Robert Hoyzer has admitted to fixing four football matcheshe was officiating, but there are three other referees currently suspended andunder investigation by a commission set up by the German football’s governingbody, the DFB. Berlin prosecutors will ultimately handle the case. Beckenbauer, who is the president of the 2006 FIFA World Cup GermanyOrganising Committee, believes that anyone found of any wrongdoing should sufferthe most severe punishment available. “I cannot and will not pre-empt the relevant authorities, but I am personallyof the opinion that persons proved guilty of manipulating results should besubject to the maximum possible penalties,” said Beckenbauer in a statement. “Referees proven to have deliberately made false decisions, thus defraudingthe game of football and its fans, should never be licensed again. “As a team, this is the time to fulfil our potential. We’ve got players whohave been to two or three tournaments and young players coming into the team whohave got good experience with their clubs. England must still reach the 2006 World Cup finals, with qualifiers againstNorthern Ireland and Azerbaijan in the next week and Ferdinand warned againstcomplacency. But the real challenge lies ahead. Since their 1966 World Cup triumph, Englandhave only reached the semi-finals of a tournament twice – at Euro 96 and Italia’90. And under Sven-Goran Eriksson, who believes this squad will peak next year, they have failed to make it past the quarter-finals at the 2002 World Cup andEuro 2004. “A lot of people are saying we’ve got great individuals but it is obvious youdon’t win anything with individuals and we’ve got to make sure we become agreat, collective team,” added Ferdinand… You will be talking about thefact we’ve won the World Cup. “Ideally I’d love the team to play brilliantly in every single game butthat’s not the case and you’d rather have the trophy at the end of the day. In club football Porto also went down a similar route to Greece, albeit withrather more flair in the form of Deco, in last year’s Champions League successunder Jose Mourinho. However, Ferdinand rejected the idea that Chelsea were similarly grinding outresults in their bid to win the title under Mourinho. “I don’t think Chelsea are a boring team. They play some exciting footballbut can still grind out results. At the end of the day, the most consistent teamwins the league,” added the Manchester United defender.
